2018 Children's Cancer Fund Models

Co-Chairs Candice Romo & Hollie Siglin Join Honorary Chairs Roger Staubach & Troy Aikman and cancer patients, survivors, and celebrities for a fashion show, dinner, and dancing, with Special Guest DJ Tony Romo

Liam Moon, 8, of Park Cities, is a featured model at theChildren’s Cancer Fund Gala “Sweet 30th Anniversary,” celebrating 30 years of sweet smiles, sweet styles, and sweet stories of survival in a candy-themed wonderland.  The Gala will take place on Friday, April 27, 2018, at the Hyatt Regency Dallas (new location this year) beginning at 6 p.m. with a silent auction and VIP reception and 7 p.m. for the dinner and program. Co-Chairs Candice Romo and Hollie Siglin join longtime Honorary Co-Chairs Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman to kick off the evening.  The event is expected to raise more than $1 million to support pediatric cancer research and treatment programs at Children's Health and UT Southwestern. Staubach, who has been involved all 30 years, and Aikman, now in his 21st year, join other celebrities and sponsors as runway escorts for 22 featured pediatric cancer patients, ages 5 – 15, who model fashions by Dillard’s for the annual fashion show, produced by RSC Productions and coordinated by Katy Sky Group. The evening features the Ray Johnston Band and concludes with dancing and music provided by the Jordan Kahn Orchestra and special Guest DJ Tony Romo, CBS NFL Commentator and former Dallas Cowboy.

Diagnosed with low grade glioma of the brain last March, Moon is in the second grade at Robert S. Hyer Elementary.  His tumor is inoperable but treatable. He had brain surgery to manage a side effect of the tumor and completed radiation. In October, he had to repeat the brain surgery. Right now, the family is waiting to see how his tumor responds to the radiation and hoping for no new growth.

Moon enjoys building Legos, all things Star Wars, and video games. He participates in two sports: rock climbing and American Ninja Warrior, and his New Year’s resolution is to grow big muscles. Moon takes his role as a big brother very seriously; he is constantly trying to guide his sister and making her solve math problems. At school, he excels in math and reading, and when he grows up, he wants to be a police officer. His hero is Dr. Dale Swift because “he saved my life.” If he could go anywhere it would be to Dave and Busters because “it is awesome, and they have yummy cheeseburgers.”

“I am very excited to participate in the Gala because I get to cheat on my diet and help other kids with cancer,” said Liam Moon.

Moon’s parents, Laura and William, are proud of their son who completed five weeks of daily radiation without using anesthesia, which required him to be completely still.

“However, every night, he would cry himself to sleep because it was so hard, and he would say he couldn’t possibly do it again,” said his mom, Laura Moon. “But then the next day he would get up and do it all again.”

“Liam recently came home from school with an assignment on perseverance,” continued Moon. “He was supposed to define the word and give an example of a time in his life that he demonstrated that quality. He explained that perseverance means doing something even when it is hard and not giving up. However, he said that he couldn’t think of a time that he had persevered.  My husband and I stared at each other with wide eyes, thinking back to the brain surgeries, activity restrictions, and all of the radiation. After some thought, he said, ‘Well, I did have to work really hard to get over the warped wall obstacle at ninja warrior. I’ll write about that.’ Kids are amazingly resilient.”

The gala, which is the organization’s largest annual fundraiser for pediatric cancer, is sponsored by CBS 11 and features Karen Borta as mistress of ceremonies. Since 1982, Children’s Cancer Fund has donated over $8 million to the childhood cancer cause. Individual tickets are $300 or $2,750 for a table of 10. Contact Children’s Cancer Fund at 972-664-1450 or visit www.ChildrensCancerFund.com/gala for reservations and more information.

Co-Chairs Romo and Siglin are also moms and best friends who are passionate about championing children.  The mission of Children’s Cancer Fund and the importance of this fundraiser led them both to say yes when asked to be this year’s co-chairs of the gala.

“With a passion for children and a love of fashion, my heart is happy to be part of the Children’s Cancer Fund 30th Anniversary Fashion Show,” said Candice Romo.

A native Texan and Dallas resident, Romo has three sons with Tony Romo. She is co-owner with Siglin of Hawk + Sloane, a line of children’s sprays they created. Siglin and her husband, Chris, reside in West Plano and also have three children.

“I am so honored to be a part of this event, which has such a significant impact on improving the future for those affected by pediatric cancer,” added Siglin.

Children’s Cancer Fund brings together local celebrities, dignitaries, philanthropists, sponsors, and media personalities to serve as runway escorts for these young patients modeling in the fashion show. In addition to Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman, escorts include Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys players and cheerleaders and Rowdy, the Cowboys mascot, as well as Victoria Arlen; Garry Brown, television producer/director; Melissa Brown, actress; Mike Crum; Juanika & Monta Ellis (of the Indiana Pacers, NBA); Kiss FM Crew (Kellie Rasberry, Big Al, JC and Jenna); Miss Texas Margana Wood; Scott Murray; Eric Norris; Amy Vanderoef; Medieval Red Knight; Pink Heals Firefighters; Batman; Belle of Beauty and the Beast; Dallas SWAT; Dallas Fire Station #19; and Children’s Cancer fund alum Russell McKeown.

“This night is all about the kids,” said Jennifer Arthur, CCF Executive Director of Development. “They spend the day getting runway ready and reuniting with their friends backstage, and when the spotlight comes on, you will see some of the sweetest smiles. This is a night they have looked forward to all year. The grand finale, which features CCF models from the past 30 years, is one of the most incredible moments of the evening. These sweet stories of survival are a testimony to the impact CCF is making in our community.”

Children’s Cancer Fund was founded in 1982 by a coalition of parents whose children were receiving cancer therapy at Children’s Medical Center. The organizers have since been joined by community leaders, dedicated volunteers, and health professionals in their fundraising efforts. Caiden Cohens 6, of North Dallas, is a featured model at theChildren’s Cancer Fund Gala “Sweet 30th Anniversary,” celebrating 30 years of sweet smiles, sweet styles, and sweet stories of survival in a candy-themed wonderland.  The Gala will take place on Friday, April 27, 2018, at the Hyatt Regency Dallas (new location this year) beginning at 6 p.m. with a silent auction and VIP reception and 7 p.m. for the dinner and program. Caiden Cohens was diagnosed with Pre B acute lymphoblastic leukemia in March 2017.  He loves playing outside and his hero is George Washington.  If he could take a trip anywhere in the world, he would go to Paris.

“Caiden exudes the essence of the true fighter,” said his mom Kamisha Wilson-Cohens. “He understands the cells in his body are sick and that his prescription medications are helping to repair those cells.  Thus, he has never had an issue with taking his medications. In fact, one day, Caiden had to take a liquid medication which he knew did not have the most pleasant taste. Instead of taking issue with the taste, he said ‘Some of these medicines might be nasty, but nothing will keep Caiden from victory!’ That’s who Caiden is… intelligent, courageous, and victorious.”

Josiah Torres, 8, of Oak Cliff, is a featured model in the Children’s Cancer Fund Gala “Sweet 30th Anniversary,” celebrating 30 years of sweet smiles, sweet styles, and sweet stories of survival in a candy-themed wonderland.  The Gala will take place on Friday, April 27, 2018, at the Hyatt Regency Dallas (new location this year) beginning at 6 p.m. with a silent auction and VIP reception and 7 p.m. for the dinner and program. Diagnosed with T-Cell Lymphoma in February 2017, Torres is in the 3rd grade and is currently home-schooled. He has developed issues with walking and not being able to use his hands and fingers as well, but with time and therapy he continues to progress.

“From the beginning, Josiah has been a fighter and does not let his illness affect him in any way,” said Estella Torres, his mom. “He does not like to hear ‘he won’t be able to’ or ‘it might take him longer.’  He is determined to prove everyone wrong and maintains an open mind about his illness. Josiah is friendly, caring, enthusiastic, humble, and a bit of a dare devil with a big heart.”

Josiah has two older sisters and a Chihuahua named Buddy. When he grows up he wants to be a doctor. His heroes are Dez Bryant because he plays for the Dallas Cowboys and Batman because he helps people, keeps them safe, and has a cool car. He is the happiest when he is with his mom and sister, and when he drives around with his dad in their truck. If he could take a trip anywhere it would be to Disney World because he has never been, and he would love to go on all the rides. Torres also enjoys being part of a group called Cowboyslife Car Club. When he feels well, he likes to help with feeding the homeless or raising money for other kids with cancer.  He also likes to help collect clothes and food to help people in need when a disaster happens. He believes in giving back and sharing what he has.

“I am so excited to be in the fashion show,” said Josiah Torres. “I get to meet lots of new people, and everyone can see that I’m happy and smiling even if I’m sick!”

These sweet stories of survival are a testimony to the impact CCF is making in our community.”

Children's Cancer Fund Patron Party Anne Davidson (center) with Children's Cancer Fund Gala Co-Chairs Hollie Siglin and Candice Romo

Nicknamed "Angel," Anne Davidson Is a Beloved Champion of Children

As top sponsor of the upcoming Children’s Cancer Fund Gala on April 27, Davidson Remains Hopeful for a Cure for Childhood Cancer

While Anne Davidson is a familiar name in Dallas philanthropic circles, many may not be aware of her personal story and her deep passion for children – whether they are suffering from poverty and homelessness, abuse or disease.

“When my mother died suddenly from a heart attack, I thought to myself what difference would my life make if I passed away tomorrow?” said Anne Davidson.

Devastated by the loss of her mom, nicknamed "Bunny," and inspired by her caring heart, Anne Davidson created the Bunny Love Foundation. Established in 1996, its mission is to provide inspiration, support, and love for children in need. Davidson grew up without much money and has fond memories of her mother buying ice cream for the neighborhood children from the ice cream truck even though they could not afford to do so.

“My mother adored children, and to honor her memory, I wanted to give back and make a difference in the lives of children,” added Davidson.  “My mother was also a singer, which inspired me to write songs and dress up as a guardian angel to go into shelters to bring joy and hope to children.”

Davidson has written 14 songs, one of which was performed at the Collin County Children’s Advocacy Gala.  For the past 21 years, Davidson has been dressing as a guardian angel, complete with wings, and going into shelters to uplift the children with singing, dancing, and stories.  She wants them to know they can be anything they want to be – giving them hope and joy. Davidson is an example of someone who has achieved the American dream.  She came from a background with no money, put herself through school, and has achieved great success as a financial advisor – listed in both Barron’s and Forbes as one of America’s top financial advisors. To date, Davidson has given over $3 million to causes throughout North Texas including Buckner’s Children’s Home, Children’s Cancer Fund, Collin County Children’s Advocacy Center, Crystal Charity Ball, Dallas Casa, Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center, St. Jude’s, The Salvation Army, Vogel Alcove, and many others.

As top sponsor for the upcoming Children’s Cancer Fund Gala on April 27 at the Hyatt Regency downtown, Davidson is passionate about finding a cure for childhood cancer.

“Children’s Cancer Fund is giving hope to children,” said Anne Davidson. “Their purpose – raising funds for treatment programs and pediatric oncology research – is fantastic.  Additionally, the joy of this event can be seen in the faces of the kids in the experience they have with the celebrities that evening.”

At the Children’s Cancer Fund Gala, 22 pediatric cancer patients, ages 5-15, walk the runway in fashions provided by Dillard’s during the gala’s fashion show, which is produced by RSC Productions and coordinated by Katy Sky Group. The children are paired with celebrities such as longtime honorary gala chairs Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman.  Staubach has been involved with this event for 30 years and Aikman for 21.  This year is Children’s Cancer Fund’s “Sweet 30th Anniversary,” is celebrating 30 years of sweet smiles, sweet styles, and sweet stories of survival in a candy-themed wonderland.

“The Co-Chairs Candice Romo and Hollie Siglin are working so hard to make this event a success,” added Davidson.  “It is my hope that the community will be inspired to join this important cause and attend this very important and heartwarming gala!”

The event is expected to raise more than $1 million to support pediatric cancer research and treatment programs at Children's Health and UT Southwestern.

“I try to look toward the future, and it is my hope these diseases will go away.  In my opinion, the most important thing Children’s Cancer Fund does is research.”

Individual tickets are $300 or $2,750 for a table of 10. Contact Children’s Cancer Fund at 972-664-1450 or visit www.ChildrensCancerFund.com/Gala for reservations and more information.

The finale of the show each year is a special time for all the children, both those currently battling cancer and young cancer survivors.  As they join together on stage, they will be introduced by the evening’s special entertainment, DJ Lucy Wrubel.

“You have to see the look on these kids’ faces as they walk down the runway. It’s what inspires us in our work and in everything we do,” said Jennifer Arthur, CCF Executive Director of Development. “They are fighters and survivors every day, but on that night, they’re stars and they’re shining brightly for their families, for the audience, and for each other.”

Children’s Cancer Fund was founded 35 years ago by a coalition of parents whose children were receiving cancer therapy at Children’s Medical Center. The organizers have since been joined by community leaders, dedicated volunteers, and health professionals in their fundraising efforts. CCF is one of the nation’s leading fundraising groups in supporting local research toward treatment and prevention of childhood cancers. Among the programs supported by Children’s Cancer Fund are the Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Fellowship Program at Children's Health and the Children's Cancer Fund Comprehensive Center for Research in Pediatric Oncology and Hematology at UT Southwestern Medical Center, which is gaining a national reputation for its work in eradicating childhood cancer. In 2002, Children’s Cancer Fund initiated funding for a full-time Child Life Specialist at the Pauline Allen Gill Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders in Children’s Medical Center to assist the outpatient team. The primary goal of the Child Life Specialist is to make each of the 80-90 daily outpatients’ visits a more positive experience. This position is funded annually by CCF, helping to ease the emotional strain of ongoing treatments, some lasting several years.
