Thursday, February 13, DIS 11th graders welcomed guest speaker and Vietnam War veteran, Robert Murrill, as he shared some incredible stories and experiences he encountered throughout his time serving in the Vietnam War. Robert spoke in-depth about his multiple tours in Vietnam, where he worked both on the front lines and in reconnaissance. Robert even brought in authentic photos and mementos from his time in Vietnam, including his P-38 can opener, a Vietnamese civilian’s journal he stumbled across, and the tarp he slept on as a soldier. Students were able to directly compare Robert's stories with The Things They Carried, which they are currently reading in class. This book is a collection of linked short stories, by American novelist Tim O'Brien, about a platoon of American soldiers fighting in the Vietnam War.
