Local Teen helps the Department of Family and Protective Services, Earns Girl Scout Gold Award

Hannah Salinas, a graduate of Ursuline Academy of Dallas, and a member of Girl Scout Troop 1897 completed her Girl Scout Gold Award by working with the Texas Department of Family Protective Services.  She redesigned one of the meeting spaces used by parents and children who are experiencing family issues.  The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) works with communities to protect children, the elderly, and people with disabilities from abuse, neglect, and exploitation. It also works to protect the health and safety of children in daycare, as well as foster care and other types of 24-hour care. We do this through investigations, services and referrals, regulation, and prevention programs. Hannah spent over 80 hours working with DFPS to redesign the meeting space.

The Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award a Girl Scout can earn, combines leadership development, career exploration and community service.  It culminates in an 80 plus hour leadership project that each girl plans and executes according to her own interest and passions. Each girl must discover an issue in the community, connect with experts and community members, and take action to effect positive change.
