Edgemere,Dallas’ premier senior living community, offers a fresh approach to aqua exercise – WATERinMOTION®. As the first and only senior living community in Texas to be certified to offer this new program, the Edgemere Water in Motion class is a low impact, high-energy aqua exercise class designed for people of all ages and fitness levels. Taught across the U.S. and in Japan by extensively trained and certified instructors, Water in Motion is a choreographed swim class, set to music. Designed with safety in mind, the mission of the program is to keep participants fit, while experiencing an aqua workout that is engaging and fun.

At Edgemere, staying active is the key to successful aging. “Water in Motion classes are ideal for seniors because the buoyancy of the water strengthens muscles and improves cardiovascular fitness, without subjecting bodies to the wear and tear associated with conventional exercise programs,” said Charles Plafcan, fitness coordinator at Edgemere. As a Water in Motion certified instructor, my goal is to offer programs that are suited to the needs of our community. Our residents appreciate the variety of exercises in each class, and the health benefits keep them coming back.”

Edgemere residents Betty Estle and Richard Poole have been attending Water in Motion classes since they moved into community. “We were looking for a gentle exercise program that would slow the progression of Richard’s spinal stenosis,” explained Estle. “I hadn’t been in a swimming pool for years, and now we go three times a week! The best part of this program is that we both feel more energetic and have experienced no pain – despite three hours of exercise each week. I’m convinced that if you don’t use it, you lose it, and our Water in Motion class is the most fun and pain-free way to stay active.”

Each quarter, the Water in Motion class changes to keep the exercise routine challenging and fun for participants with the addition of new choreography and music. With land-equivalent intensity, sing-along quality music and certified instructors, the 55-minute class offers an invigorating and rewarding workout. At Edgemere, Plafcan tailors the classes to the musical tastes of the residents. Instead of exercising to today’s hit music, he has used upbeat music from the 1940s and 1950s to get the residents engaged and keep them moving throughout the class.

Water in Motion classes are offered three times a week at Edgemere starting at 8:30 a.m. every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

“We put a lot of thought into offering programs that benefit our residents,” said John Falldine, managing director of Edgemere. “Water in Motion is a popular class that makes this form of exercise pure fun for everyone.”
