C.J. Arnold

The recently published children's book, Pokey Goes to America, which was written by Preston Hollow resident C.J. Arnold, is a patriotic story that addresses the early reasons that led to the development of the United States — told through the eyes of a mouse.

The book, which is 39-pages long and meant to be read to children who are five and six years old, is about how a curious gray mouse with a large purple nose from England boards a ship that is bound for America in the 1700s to look for food then falls asleep and wakes up at sea. Along the way, Pokey learns why children on board were leaving England to make home on a new land.

Arnold, who is a 78-year-old former school teacher, said the purpose of the book is to promote patriotism and teach children why settlers came to America.

"The history of America is being watered down and patriotism appears to be waning, and that really saddens me," Arnold said. "We are so fortunate in this country, and we should be proud of its history."

Pokey has many adventures throughout the book, Arnold said. Pokey even sends a messenger mouse to England to tell Pokey's mother where he is and ask her to join Pokey in America, similar to what the early settlers did.

In addition to its historical aspect, the book promotes family relations, such as when Pokey shows remorse for disobeying his mother, Arnold said. Nautical terms are used throughout the story to help strengthen children's vocabularies, and there are twelve illustrations in the book to further engage children.

The book can be purchased online through the Barnes & Noble website and Amazon.com.
