“Can I light a candle, too,” the little girl asked. “Of course,” replied Stephanie Hughes, celebrant for the recent Candlelight Service of Remembrance at the Hughes Family Tribute Center. Surviving, much less celebrating, the Holidays can be a painfully emotional time for people who have lost close loved ones, even if the death was some time ago. “We wanted to give families, many of whom might not have a church home, someplace to go where they could remember and honor their lost loved ones,” said Ms. Hughes. Candles were lit in memory and honor of lost children, parents, extended family and friends, and a special candle was lit for U.S. veterans. The Center invited the general public and all of the families who have used the Center the past five years. Ms. Hughes, a Certified Funeral Celebrant, one of only a few in Dallas, and her husband DeWayne Hughes, owner and manager of the Center take seriously their commitment to community service. This year, in addition to the candlelight remembrance service, the Center also participated in Sweaters for Veterans, collecting sweaters and gloves for distribution at the Dallas VA Medical Center, and plans to participate in Valentines for Veterans in February.
