The Dallas Arboretum displayed full fall color for “Treasured Legacies”, the eighth annual A Writer’s Garden Literary Symposium and Luncheon held last Thursday. Attendees enjoyed another special experience, as it was also the preview day for the upcoming 12 Days of Christmas exhibit.  

The three noted authors were Kim Wilson, whose new book "At Home with Jane Austen" was published less than two months ago; Kelsey Mullen, the director of public programming and education for the Mount and author of "The Mount: Edith Wharton’s Home"; and Greg Grant, a seventh generation Texan and co-author of "Heirloom Gardening of the South." 

In her delightful presentation, Wilson detailed Jane Austen's life, focusing on where she wrote her classic novels. Wilson explained how Austen's work related to her environment, connecting Austen's passion for gardening with her dedication to witful writing. 

Mullen exhibited her vast knowledge of Edith Wharton in her insightful presentation. She walked guests through the magic of "The Mount," where Wharton wrote "The House of Mirth." As a renowned decorator, Wharton's appreciation for beauty informed her literary creativity. 

Grant's presentation included a tour of his home — his great-grandparents' old dogtrot house located in deep East Texas. Here, Grant has dedicated his time to his garden and family, and has successfully introduced dozens of plants to the Texas nursery industry.

A private reception was hosted in the home of Katherine and Mike Phillips the evening before for patrons and sponsors to meet the authors. The event, presented by the Women’s Council of the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden, was chaired by President Dorothea Meltzer. 

Proceeds from the event make possible the continued expansion and improvement of A Woman’s Garden.
