The Covenant School Athletic Director and head football coach, Brice Helton, was named the TAPPS 2A Coach of the Year. He received the award at the annual TAPPS luncheon in San Antonio last week. This is especially significant because Brice received the TAPPS 2A Player of the Year award in 2001.  Coach Helton was excited to receive the award saying, “This award is a very big honor, and it was especially significant to receive the award in Edd Burleson’s last year.”  Edd Burleson has been the Director of TAPPS for twenty years and recently announced his retirement from the private school organization that consists of over two hundred schools statewide.

In the last eight years under Helton, Covenant has gone 83-22 while making five appearances in the state championship football game.  This last season the Knights were able to bring home their first state title capping off a 13-1 season.  In addition to serving as Athletic Director and head football coach, Brice is also the Facilities Director and head track coach.  The Covenant boys track team finished fourth in state for their third straight year.  While Covenant has seen success on the field, Coach Helton sees it only as a product of what is being built off the field with the students.  “Coaching is a tremendous opportunity to invest in the lives of young men and women.  We try to develop who they’re going to be in twenty years just as much as how they play each sport right now.”  Covenant also finished fourth place in the state in the overall standings in their classification which includes athletics, academics, art and music.
