"Doctor, Doctor” will wow the crowd with “bone chilling” rock ‘n' roll at Halloween soiree
Although many Dallas doctors are considered among the nation’s leading medical experts, there is a select group of prominent surgeons and specialists that are the most sought-after healthcare authorities on the local “music scene” as members of all the all-physicians rock band called “Doctor Doctor.”
These talented physicians, turned moonlighting musicians, will be the headliners at the 7th Annual Arthritis Foundation Bone Bash, presented by the W.B. Carrell Memorial Clinic, on Saturday, Oct. 27 at the Fairmont Dallas, 1717 N. Akard St. at 6:30 p.m. Proceeds from the Bone Bash support funding to conduct research to find a cure, provide public health/educational programs for those who have arthritis, and continue the Foundation’s advocacy efforts throughout North Texas. Registration and sponsorship information can also be found at www.DallasBoneBash.org.
Doctor Doctor, led by Dr. Buz Burkhead, will get the audience rocking and rolling for what promises to be the must-attend Halloween event in North Texas. The “spooktacular” Bone Bash costume gala, co-chaired by Drs. Buz Burkhead, Paul Peters and Kurt Rathjen, is expected to draw more than 500 ghoulish revelers due to its growing popularity and stellar entertainment.
Founding members of the Doctor Doctor band initially met in the early 1980s and soon became aware that they had more in common than their medical expertise. Most were former college band members, had musical performance experience or taken formal training as youngsters. As a fledging musical group, the physicians recruited other doctor-musicians, held informal jam sessions at their homes and performed for friends before taking their act on the road.
“When we started the band, we hoped our first gig would be at a roller skating party because we thought someone might break their wrist, get in a fight or have a heart attack, in which case we would make money in two ways,” joked Burkhead.
The doctors later discovered that they not only had a knack for musical entertainment but also a talent for wowing audiences with their rock, blues and country selections that kept friends dancing all night long. The group soon decided to form their own doctor rock band and perform as main-stage entertainment at gala benefits to help non-profit organizations generate funds for local charities.
Today, Doctor Doctor has emerged as a Dallas favorite and has even recorded original selections which have received significant airplay on several local stations. “We’re delighted to perform for the upcoming Arthritis Foundation benefit because the organization performs a valuable service by generating public awareness about arthritis programs, wellness activities and local resources,” said Burkhead. “Performing with Doctor Doctor not only allows us to share camaraderie as physicians, but it also gives us an opportunity to offer our talents as musicians at charitable events, like the Bone Bash, that support medical research, education and treatment in our community,” he said.
The Arthritis Foundation Bone Bash includes guests from the medical community, arthritis patients, community leaders, and friends and supporters of the Arthritis Foundation who gather to enjoy an evening of live music, dinner, drinks, costume contests and a silent auction.
Just a few of the gala’s highlights include the much-anticipated live and silent auctions, as well as the evening’s raffle. This year, Bone Bash organizers have secured an incredible array of luxury, sports, arts and entertainment and travel items including Hollywood and New Orleans VIP Trip Packages and Eiseman Jewels from NorthPark Center among many other fabulous items.
Individual patron tickets are $200. Sponsorships are available at $3,000, $5,000, $10,000, $15,000 and $20,000. For more information contact: Carol Little, Arthritis Foundation; 214-818-0374 or clittle@arthritis.org or visit www.DallasBoneBash.org.
