Twenty-four lucky Lakehill Upper School students embarked on the trip of a lifetime this Spring Break, taking off to the Big Apple. On March 10, the students began their adventure with an early morning flight to New York and then headed to the W hotel in the heart of Times Square.
The group attended five fantastic Broadway shows and an opera at Lincoln Center: Hello Dolly, La Boheme, Come from Away, Once on this Island, Carousel, and Mean Girls. The students participated in two Broadway workshops, getting the chance to work with the dance captain for Come from Away, learning a musical number and a dance from the show, and a second with Christian Dante White, currently appearing as Cornelius in Hello Dolly, focusing on the life of a performer.
Students spent an afternoon touring Radio City Music Hall, getting an opportunity to stand onstage as well as talking with a member of the Rockettes. They had many opportunities to experience New York City culture, shopping at local shops, and trying the food at local delis and doughnut shops.
In their down time, students had the option to spend their time shopping in Soho, touring and shopping in the Strand bookstore with its 18 miles of books, or visiting the 9/11 Memorial. The group enjoyed a meal at the popular Ellen's Stardust Diner on Broadway, enjoying a live performance from the waiters as they ate, and a special performance of "New York, New York" by Mr. Herron. At their final dinner, the group was joined by three Lakehill alums: Charlotte Abate, Emily Boles, and Kevin Lantz.
"The trip was exhilarating and exhausting," said chaperone Elizabeth Schmitt. "It was gratifying to see all of our group participate in the workshops. They got to experience such a great variety of live performances from opera to Broadway classics to brand new shows. It was wonderful watching them create lasting memories."
"The highlight of the trip for me was seeing Come from Away," said junior Anna Somodevilla. "The workshop on it was fun and energetic, but the show gave me a new perspective on what 9/11 was really like." Sophomore Lindsey Evans agreed. "The workshop gave me insights into all of the aspects of the creative process. I also taught my dad something about 9/11 that he did not know."
