UP City Council To Discuss YMCA at Special Meeting

The UP City Council will have a special meeting this Friday, Nov. 16 at 4 p.m. in the second-floor council conference room, to discuss the details of the new YMCA building — which was approved unanimously by the council earlier this month.

According to the agenda, the council will "discuss proposed conditions for PD-12 (Park Cities Family YMCA) and provide direction to staff regarding drafting an amending ordinance."

Although Council has approved the project’s general parameters, there is a list of items and considerations that Council must provide direction on before staff can write an PD Ordinance for formal consideration, according to Community Information Officer Steve Mace.

Initially proposed at 65,000 square feet, the council ask the YMCA to reduce that number to 52,000. At the last meeting, council members approved a compromise that would allow the building to be 52,000 square feet, with an additional 10 percent of non-activity space — pushing the maximum square footage to 57,200.

No other topics are on Friday’s agenda. Mace said the council wanted a stand-alone meeting so it could focus on the topic. A similar process was followed prior to formal adoption of the PD for the Bush Library.

No votes will be taken during the Friday meeting.
