Dallas Architecture Forum, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing challenging and on-going public discourse about architecture, design and the urban environment, is pleased to announce that its 2014-15 season of lectures will begin with the award-winning architect, artist, and founder of buildingstudio Coleman Coker. He will speak on Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. at The Horchow Auditorium, Dallas Museum of Art, 1717 N. Harwood Street.
The lecture by Professor Coker will be at 7 p.m. with a complimentary reception beginning at 6:15 p.m. Tickets are $20 for general admission, $15 for DMA Partners, and $5 for students (with ID). Tickets can be purchased at the door before the lecture. No reservations are needed to attend Forum lectures. Dallas Architecture Forum members receive free admission to all regular Forum lectures as a benefit of membership, and AIA members can earn one hour of CE credit for each lecture.
Coleman Coker is an architect and artist best known for the Cook House, the Barton Residence, the Shiloh Falls Residence, Texas Twister at Rey Rosa Ranch, the Patterson Clinic, Bridges Center, and the Alligator House. Coker founded buildingstudio in 1999 after a thirteen-year partnership with Samuel Mockbee as Mockbee/Coker Architects. Their work was collected in Mockbee/Coker, Thought and Process. Coker has earned numerous honors, including a P/A Design Award for low-cost housing, “Breaking the Cycle of Poverty”. He has received two Record Houses Awards and National AIA Honor Awards. His work has been highlighted in various exhibits including MoMA, SF MoMA, Wexner Center for the Arts, the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum and in the permanent collection of the National Building Museum.
Coker holds a Master of Fine Arts, and an honorary Doctorate, from the Memphis College of Art. He was awarded the Rome Prize from the American Academy in Rome and was a Loeb Fellow in Advanced Environmental Studies at Harvard University Graduate School of Design. He is the Ruth Carter Stevenson Regents Chair in the Art of Architecture at the University of Texas at Austin.
