Primrose School of Preston Hollow - Grand Opening Celebration

Aspiring to make a difference in the lives of Dallas-area children and their families, Primrose Schools Franchise Owners Julia and David Shelton hosted a grand opening event for local families to celebrate the new Primrose School of Preston Hollow on Saturday, March 21 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

State Rep. Jason Villalba led a ribbon-cutting ceremony and gave remarks beginning at 10:15 a.m. Additionally, Jo Kirchner, president and CEO of Primrose Schools, Bill Pierquet, senior vice president of school development, and Chris Goethe, vice president of franchising, also attended to officially mark the school’s opening. Over 500 guests enjoyed the celebration which included school tours, refreshments and children’s activities, including face painting, a balloon artist, Dallas Fire Department and Dallas Police. The highlights of the day were visits from the Primrose mascot, Percy, and Heroes, Cops and Kids (a community organization comprised of Dallas Police officers and other community leaders created to be positive role models for the community and it's kids), as well as giveaways and raffle prizes for attendees.

Primrose School of Preston Hollow officially opened its doors to students on Monday, Feb. 23. Ultimately, the 16,000-square-foot, two-story school will add approximately 35 full- and part-time jobs to the community and serve more than 200 local children and families.

As the first Primrose school to open inside the loop of Dallas, Primrose School of Preston Hollow now provides high-quality early education and care for families in Preston Hollow, the Park Cities, Lakewood, Lake Highlands and Uptown – areas that have historically been extremely underserved due to a lack of available land to build schools.

“As an educator, I understand and value the importance of high-quality early education and care,” said Julia. “We’re deeply rooted in the Dallas community and saw the true need to provide a Primrose school inside I-635 to metro Dallas families,” added David.

Primrose School of Preston Hollow features 12 private classrooms with wireless technology throughout and four secure, age-appropriate playgrounds to accommodate each stage of the children's early development. As part of the Primrose Schools Thumbs Up!® Enrichment Program, one playground has no equipment, as it is specifically designed for physical development and activity. Children will also develop and refine their fine motor skills through the Primrose Patch – a garden on the school’s property where children participate in monthly gardening and nature study.

Primrose School of Preston Hollow will offer the Primrose exclusive Balanced Learning® curriculum, which blends teacher-guided and child-initiated activities with a special emphasis on character development, for children 6 weeks to 6-years-old. Over the past six years, Primrose Schools has used the Bracken School Readiness Assessment to ensure the effectiveness of its proprietary curriculum. Additionally, as safety is a top priority, the new school will feature the official Primrose Schools Safe School Plan, which provides guidelines to ensure ongoing safety measures are in place and parents and staff members are well prepared for emergencies.

Primrose School of Preston Hollow is located at 10715 Preston Road. To contact Primrose School of Preston Hollow, please call 214-369-7774 or visit www.PrimrosePrestonHollow.com.

Real Estate Opportunity
Capitalizing on a unique real estate opportunity, the Sheltons converted an old two-story Chase Bank building built in 1969 into the new Primrose school. The building operated as a bank through the early 2000s before sitting vacant for the last decade.

The redevelopment of this structure and conversion into a two-story school is the latest in a new, urban school model that Primrose is building more of to accommodate the increasing number of families who are seeking high-quality child care within city limits. Primrose continues to seek opportunities to build more urban schools as demand for early education and care increases in urban areas across the country.

“As the urban migration takes places across the U.S., we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to serve families and communities we have previously been unable to reach,” said Bill Pierquet, senior vice president of school development for Primrose Schools. “We’re actively collaborating with brokers, developers and Franchise Owners in major cities like Dallas to help us find the right spaces and land so we can fill the need for high-quality early education and care in these areas.”

The Importance of the First Five Years

High-quality early childhood education provides children with the foundation they need to lead healthy, safe and productive lives. At Primrose Schools®, The Leader in Educational Child Care®, our exclusive Balanced Learning® curriculum blends teacher-guided and child-initiated activities with a special emphasis on character development to build the right foundation for Active Minds, Healthy Bodies and Happy Hearts® in the first five years of a child’s life.

Research shows the most significant brain development milestones occur from birth to age 5. Babies are born with more than 100 billion nerve cells in their brains. These neurons must connect and communicate with each other in order to form the circuits needed to think, learn and succeed – something neurons do at the remarkable rate of 700 connections per second in the first five years of life.

According to The Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University, “The strength and efficiency of these connections is greatly affected by social interactions that involve an active back-and-forth – or ‘serve and return’ – exchange of information.” Parents and educators play a critical role in creating these new and repeated experiences that lay the foundation for a wide range of developmental outcomes later in life.

“Serve and return” can be implemented with children of all ages to promote a variety of positive learning outcomes, such as literacy and language skills, social and emotional confidence, and executive functioning skills, such as team-building and leadership skills.

At Primrose Schools, our team of leading early childhood educators has created an integrated curriculum that carefully balances social, emotional, physical and academic learning based on age and development levels. For example, during story time, teachers engage students in different back-and-forth interactions by age, including:

  • · Ages 6 weeks to 1-year-old: cooing and making facial expressions
  • · Ages 1-3: asking questions and using different character voices
  • · Ages 4-5: discussing feelings

By frequently and deliberately pairing words with objects and actions to create meaning, Primrose students begin to learn language to its fullest extent. Additionally, by implementing “serve and return” and discussing problems and feelings during playtime, children begin to develop important life skills, such as playing well with others, thinking outside the box and learning to cope with failures.

“Early childhood education provides the foundation for a child’s future in life beyond school,” said Julia Shelton, Franchise Owner of Primrose School of Preston Hollow. “In addition to critical thinking skills, we focus on character development and life skills, such as friendship, generosity and honesty. Our goal is for every Primrose child to develop into a well-rounded individual with a love of learning and life.”

The rapid development that takes place during the first five years of a child’s life is critical to success in life, and early educators play a pivotal role in fostering this growth. To learn more about the many lifelong benefits of enrolling your child at Primrose School of Preston Hollow please visit www.PrimrosePrestonHollow.com or call 214-369-7774. Classes begin for students on February 23, 2015. Call to schedule your tour today.

Fostering Healthy Habits in Young Children

Every parent knows that fostering healthy habits in children is important, but there is no instruction manual for how to go about it. In the middle of a tantrum or a broccoli boycott, it can even seem like giving in to unhealthy habits is the only option. But healthy habits are some of the most crucial behaviors children can learn, and they can be taught successfully with a little preparation and a lot of encouragement.

A habit is, by definition, a “regular tendency or practice, especially one that is hard to give up.” It can be tough to recognize habits forming before they become routine, and, as most parents know firsthand, bad habits are hard to break. That’s why fostering healthy behavior in children must start early on.

Before thinking of your next scheme to turn TV time into book time or to camouflage green beans, keep in mind the following bites of information from Dr. Laura Jana, pediatrician, author and member of the Primrose Schools Education Advisory Board:

The numbers add up. Adults tend to dismiss habits like having one sweet after dinner or taking a daily stroll around the block as being too small to matter, but the numbers really do add up. Even the smallest actions can make a difference in a child’s future behaviors.

It’s never too early. The earlier a child forms a healthy habit, the better. Don’t let age discourage you from promoting a healthy routine as long as it can be done in a safe way.

Take a step back. Parents are busy – it’s a fact. Try to take a step back every now and then to evaluate whether your actions with and around your child are promoting healthy habits, and readjust as needed.

Dr. Jana also offers the following advice to encourage two of the most important habits for young children: tooth-brushing and reading.

Tooth-brushing

If you want your child to remember and even enjoy tooth-brushing, don’t wait for teeth. Infants love putting things in their mouths and having their gums rubbed. Establish a fun routine using baby toothbrushes, which are designed specifically for an infant’s mouth, to kick-start a healthy habit before your child reaches the tumultuous stage of toddlerhood.

Reading

Make reading fun before it becomes a challenge your child has to overcome. Start reading together even before your child can sit up, hold a book and understand all the words. After all, the goal isn’t just to raise a child who knows how to read but who loves to read. As your child gets older, find ways to expand the routine or to make it more fun.

Encouraging healthy habits in children is no easy task, but getting a head start, taking small steps, and looking at the bigger picture every now and then can make all the difference.

Primrose School of Preston Hollow Caring and Giving

Every parent wants their child to be compassionate and generous, but with today’s expectations of instant gratification and focus on digital interactions, teaching children the joy of giving back and helping others can be more of a challenge. Add to that the fact that young children are naturally focused on themselves, and the task of encouraging caring and giving behaviors in children seems overwhelming. But, there is hope. A study conducted by two Harvard anthropologists, John and Beatrice Whiting, observed the altruistic practices of children in six world cultures. Their findings indicate that children assigned more household responsibilities are more helpful and giving.

By helping to instill the value of giving back in young children, we introduce them to the sense of fulfillment that is derived from helping others, ultimately contributing to a more well-rounded future in the classroom and in life. And research shows that young children who have high prosocial skills – or behaviors meant to benefit another – are also among the most cognitively ready for school.

At the Primrose School of Preston Hollow, we integrate activities and lessons that encourage responsibility and help develop these prosocial skills as part of our Balanced Learning® curriculum. For example, during our Caring and Giving program, our students perform household chores to provide food items for families in need around the holidays. The students combine – and learn to count – their earnings, create a detailed shopping list and visit the grocery store to purchase items, providing them with a hands-on approach to developing math, nutrition and planning skills. This annual event provides Primrose parents with a fun way to encourage household chores, and it helps students understand the value of generosity. Some students even create Thanksgiving or caring message cards to send along with the donated food.

“Children who learn the value of helping and giving back at a young age are able to develop a sense of empathy and citizenship,” said Julia Shelton, Franchise Owner of the Primrose School of Preston Hollow. “By encouraging Primrose students to participate in a meaningful, hands-on way, we are empowering them with the character traits and tools necessary to continue making a difference in their communities and to enjoy doing it.”

At the Primrose School of Preston Hollow, we are passionate about helping children learn the joy and fulfillment of lending a helping hand to others from a young age so we can prepare them for greater success in school and in life.
