MINT dentistry’s goal of putting smiles on people’s faces doesn’t stop during a pandemic: To help a community in need, the dentistry practice is providing groceries for people who are experiencing food insecurity. MINT dentistry founder Dr. Field Harrison and his wife, Sabrina Harrison, have joined employees and volunteers to give away boxes of groceries to people who line up in their cars at a MINT grocery giveaway, an initiative the dentistry practice has been doing on Saturdays. This week’s giveaway is at the MINT dentistry office in  Bishop Arts, at 2433 W Davis Street, Dallas, Texas 75211 on Saturday, June 13, from 10 a.m. to noon.

“Need groceries? Just show up,” Dr. Harrison said. “We just wanted to do our very small part and try to help people out.”

During the event, 500 plus boxes of groceries purchased by MINT from Minnie’s Food Pantry will be given away, each containing a week’s worth of food. People can simply line up in their vehicles to receive a box (touch-free, from volunteers wearing masks), and a message of hope. Each box contains a week’s worth of meals and includes non-perishable items like spaghetti, rice, peanut butter, canned goods and more. The box also contains something important for a healthy smile: a full-sized tube of toothpaste from MINT dentistry.

Dr. Harrison and Sabrina have been shocked at reports on the news about all the people who have lost jobs and are hungry due to this pandemic. They immediately decided that they needed to help, and devised a plan for MINT dentistry to fund grocery giveaways from Minnie’s Food Pantry at MINT dentistry offices. Through several weeks of grocery giveaways, MINT dentistry has provided more than 3,000 boxes of food to local citizens in need.

Though the cause of hunger is serious, the grocery giveaway events have a celebratory vibe: MINT dentistry employs a local DJ to play music, volunteers dance while they assist, and people hold signs with messages like “We Love You.” There are smiles all around, waves from volunteers, and honks from appreciative recipients, who find something else in their box when they arrive home – a personal message from MINT dentistry that expresses best wishes and a prayer for the recipients of the box.

Through his community service and through his dental work, Dr. Harrison is passionate about healing pain—whether that’s dental pain, spiritual pain, mental pain, loss of dignity, or financial pain. Even before he graduated from dental school, Dr. Harrison was volunteering in a clinic offering free dental care in South Dallas, and traveling to Romania with other doctors and dentists to end a village's suffering with tooth and jaw pain. Since founding MINT dentistry with the conviction that outstanding dental care should be affordable to everyone, Dr. Harrison continues to give back, including providing free dental care to soldiers who've suffered grievous tooth and jaw injuries in combat. Dr. Harrison and Sabrina Harrison are devout Christians who welcome those of all faiths, and who believe strongly in giving back to their communities.

MINT dentistry has also started offering more appointment availability by taking Saturday appointments. Because dentist offices were closed due to quarantine for so many weeks, many people are struggling to get in to see their dentist. To help provide availability to top-notch dental care, MINT dentistry has created additional appointment options to accommodate more patients.  To learn more, or to schedule an appointment, visit MINTdentistry.com or call 214-821-MINT

Dr. Harrison encourages everyone to continue their regular dental check-ups because regular dental care is one of the best things you can do for your immune system.

“Having your teeth cleaned and controlling the bacteria in your mouth helps protect you from systemic diseases and boost your immune system,” Dr. Harrison explained. “We are encouraging everyone to do what they can to keep themselves healthy, which is incredibly important right now.”

Since its opening in 2009, MINT dentistry has been at the forefront of every major advance in dentistry. MINT dentistry was among the first adopters of the new IMAX porcelain veneers, the first to introduce team dentistry, the first to combine iPads with movies and leather massage chairs, the first to take the fear out of dentistry, the first to offer luxury dentistry that is truly affordable, and the first to bring the price of veneers down to earth. MINT dentistry now has more than 50 locations in Dallas and Houston, with skilled support staff that have introduced discount and dental insurance to thousands without insurance or those whose insurance has let them down. MINT dentistry has been named the “Best Family Dentist” two years in a row by Consumer’s Choice and has earned more than 36,000 5-star Google reviews. Cariloha to Open First North Texas Location in The Shops at Legacy

The Shops at Legacy is pleased to welcome bamboo clothing, bedding and bath goods retailer Cariloha to the carefully curated retailer mix that constitutes Plano’s original lifestyle destination. The 1,428-square-foot store will be located at 7201 Bishop Road, Suite E11, between Scout & Molly’s and Cousin Earl. This will be the first Cariloha location in North Texas.

Cariloha will celebrate its grand opening on Sunday, August 25, 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.  At the event, guests can enjoy complimentary bubbles and cookies, bamboo leis, and island-style music. The first 50 guests will receive a pair of Cariloha bamboo socks to kick-start their bamboo goods collection. All attendees will receive a scratch-off discount card for 10 to 20 percent off their purchase, as well as a chance to win other products including bamboo sheets, blankets, pillows and other items.

“Our guests are always looking for new ways to enhance their lifestyle,” Kelsey Ishmael, director of marketing for The Shops at Legacy, said. “Cariloha is a great example of an international company bringing something new to Plano with a line of products based on a green, renewable resource.”

The only retail store in Plano exclusively selling bedding and bath goods made from eco-friendly bamboo, Cariloha offers guests the chance to touch and feel the bamboo-soft difference in the bed sheets, towels, mattresses and apparel that the company offers. Bamboo is twice as soft to the touch as cotton; it keeps you up to three degrees cooler than cotton; and is naturally antibacterial, hypoallergenic and repels odor – all of which comes in handy on a hot day.

“When you think of bamboo, large green shoots in the jungle somewhere likely come to mind,” said Jeff Pedersen, Cariloha president and CEO. “Not many people know that bamboo can actually be husked and separated into ultra-soft fabric for making apparel and other goods at little-to-no risk on the environment. In fact, some species of bamboo can grow up to four feet per day. It’s one of the most renewable resources on the planet.”

Cariloha Plano is a family operation with four owners, Charles and Becky Burke and Kevin and Kristen Skiles. Charles and Becky first discovered Cariloha while cruising the Caribbean and shopping while docked at port. Before they were even home from vacation, they made a plan to open a Cariloha store in Austin, Texas, knowing their neighbors would appreciate the softer, cooler, and cleaner products just as much as they do. A year and a half later, they convinced daughter Kristen and son-in-law Kevin to partner and open a second store, this one in Plano.

Satish and Yasmin Gupta and Family

Giving with grateful hearts, Satish and Yasmin Gupta fund initiatives at Baylor Scott & White The Heart Hospital – Plano for physicians from around the world.

On a mission to improve lives all over the world, the Gupta Agarwal Foundation has made a $5 million gift that will help to fund research and education related to cardiac conditions. Satish and Yasmin Gupta, founders of the Gupta Agarwal Foundation, have a deep commitment to improving access to knowledge and education that will help change lives. The gift was made to fund research and education at Baylor Scott & White The Heart Hospital – Plano, a North Texas facility recognized around the world for excellent cardiac care, where the Satish & Yasmin Gupta Heart Center was recently unveiled.

“We are honored and humbled to be able to change lives through this gift,” Satish Gupta said. “It is important to us that our friends here and around the world have access to the best medical care, and that we all understand the importance of leading lives filled with balance. It is our pleasure and our purpose to be involved with our community in this way.”

“I will always be thankful for the opportunities I have been granted to be involved with thoughtful people whose service and generosity have made our communities better,” said Rowland K. Robinson, president of Baylor Scott & White Dallas Foundation. “This incredibly generous gift from Yasmin and Satish will support our efforts to continue improving the lives of our patients and the health of our communities-both near and far. We are profoundly grateful.”

The Gupta family sees this gift as an opportunity for a partnership with a leading healthcare institution, Baylor Scott & White Health, to positively impact lives around the world.  In addition to research and education that will benefit patients, the funds will also allow physicians from other countries to observe the top-level care provided at Baylor Scott & White The Heart Hospital - Plano, get trained in the latest  advances and then take that knowledge home to help those in need in their own countries.

“Anything you give should snowball to something bigger – and this is a global initiative,” Yasmin Gupta stressed. “You address your immediate community and, from there, you take it to the next level.  Global initiatives are executed on a local level.”

As founders and owners of SB International Inc., manufacturers and traders of specialized steel products, Satish and Yasmin Gupta are first-generation immigrants who moved to the U.S. for education and stayed because they felt that they had found the community where they could raise both their family and grow their business. Through this initiative, these Dallas residents see opportunity to thank the North Texas community they call home now, their native country of India, and the communities around the world with which they do business.

Their commitment is a very personal one: Satish’s and Yasmin’s fathers both needed life-saving heart bypass procedures in the 1980s. The young couple worked hard for the resources needed to bring their fathers from India to Texas for treatments that ultimately extended their lives. In 2003, Satish became aware of his own cardiac symptoms and, working with physicians at Baylor Scott & White Health, began to take a proactive approach to his own health that he continues diligently to this day.

In addition to a focus on preventative care, the donation will be used to fund research into new techniques and therapies. At Baylor Scott & White The Heart Hospital – Plano, physicians have been among the first to advance life-saving procedures, such as transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), a minimally invasive procedure to replace a narrowed aortic valve that people including rock musician Mick Jagger are undergoing to repair heart valves without open heart surgery.

The Gupta family will be directly involved in this initiative. Daughter Samantha Gupta Parmar, a healthcare professional, will serve on a newly created committee to help direct the gift. Chat Ganesh, director of the board for the Gupta Agarwal Charitable Foundation, will also serve on the committee for the gift’s direction. Satish and Yasmin will also lend their business acumen and personal commitment to this mission to improve lives.

“We consider it a partnership with sustainability,” Satish Gupta explained. “The knowledge gained and shared through research and education will live well beyond all of us.”

The Guptas also hope that their gift inspires others who want to make positive change anywhere in the world.  “We hope that others see what we are doing and give in their own way. You just have to have a heart for giving,” Yasmin Gupta said.

The Gupta Agarwal Foundation funds initiatives that promote access to healthcare, education and cultural awareness, including the largest celebration of the festival of lights in the U.S., Diwali Mela, which takes place in Dallas each fall.  The 501(c)3 organization was founded in 2005 by Satish and Yasmin Gupta and, to date, has committed and contributed more than $25 million to the community.  To learn more about the foundation, please visit www.guptasfoundation.org.

THE COOPS:   Seven outstanding urban chicken coops are on the tour:

Bienvenidos! - Moss Haven Farm- This impeccably-designed educational coop allows the 500 Moss Haven Elementary students to learn about chickens and coop care. Most of the hens are hatched in kindergarten classrooms. The 4H Club, with its 30 student members, participate in caring for the coop and learn chicken husbandry with an eye toward competition. They train with a master gardener to become proficient in different breed characteristics and have even shown the chickens at the State Fair of Texas. In fact, the Moss Haven 4H Team won “Best Egg Contents” in 2016 and 2017 at the State Fair of Texas, competing against more than 50 other entrants. All Moss Haven Elementary classes, grades K-6, attend weekly farm lessons where they tend their class vegetable bed while our hens look on.

El Sol– This solar-powered coop allows its family to leave for vacation for up to a month and only needing someone to collect eggs -- energy-efficiency at its finest!

La Isla Bonita– This coop is named after a dearly departed hen, and features a flock of five hatched hens who are all Christmas chickens, born between December 24 and 26. The coop is not only beautiful, but also extremely functional and easy.

The Whole Enchilada- The coop is large and features a fence down the center that creates a makeshift racetrack. It gives the girls nine hen girls who call this their casa something to do and makes it easier to incorporate other birds into the flock.

El Sombrero- Come for the hens in the side yard and stay for the fully edible garden in the backyard! After attending this very tour five years ago, this coop’s owner, a master gardener, became interested in raising hens for eggs and as pets. The large coop boasts four big, pampered hens and five baby chicks, and also features a fig tree which not only provides sweet treats but also lots of shade in the dog days of summer.

Los Huevos– After reading an article in The Dallas Morning News, this coop owner became interested in having fresh eggs in his own backyard. And with eleven hens spanning ten breeds, not only does he have plenty of eggs, but the eggs are also varied in both size and color. This coop features an automated waterer and a rodent-proof feeder that opens when the chickens step on the plate, and has a full-size door and a double roost at the back.

Los Pollos De Verano(“Chickens of Summer”) - This family-friendly coop is the perfect home for eight spoiled hens. The child-friendly design allows the family’s three kids to be involved with caring for the chickens and the coop itself.
