What’s better than giving a gift from the heart that also does good?
This holiday season, Operation Kindness – North Texas’ original and largest no-kill animal shelter presents its end of year holiday campaign “Stock Our Hospital” highlighting gift giving opportunities in their 2018 Kindness Katalog. This year’s Kindness Katalog focuses on the medical services at Operation Kindness. The goal of the “Stock Our Hospital” campaign, is to help stock Operation Kindness’ hospital and replenish the medicine and medical supplies used in caring for more than 5,000 animals each year. Sam Pack Auto Group’s Five Star Subaru of Grapevine will help in this effort by donating $100 for every car sold from Dec. 1-31.

Operation Kindness is one of the only shelters in Texas that willingly takes animals that are in need of costly lifesaving services or medical attention. Operation Kindness is the only shelter in Texas that routinely offers its animals life-saving advanced surgeries such as open- heart and hip dysplasia. Operation Kindness’ annual medical budget is $1.2 million, and they receive no government funding. In 2017, Operation Kindness completed or paid for:

  • 3,140 spays and neuters;

  • Treated 529 cases of heartworms;

  • Treated 2,083 cases of upper respiratory infections;

    and,

  • 363 orthopedic, ophthalmic and internal surgeries.

    The mascot for this year’s “Stock Our Hospital” holiday campaign is two-year-old chihuahua Macy, who originally came to Operation Kindness from a municipal shelter partner. When Macy was rescued, she had a rear leg fracture and needed surgery. The broken leg would have resulted in euthanasia at any other shelter. Macy required multiple rounds of X-rays, splints, medication, lab tests, care in ICU and lots of fluids. Her adoption fee doesn’t even begin to cover all her medical expenses. With the help of Operation Kindness and their medical team, Macy is now fully recovered and is available for adoption.

    Operation Kindness serves as the “go-to” partner for 47 municipal shelters and rescue centers that have run out of space or don’t have the proper resources to provide the right medical care to homeless animals in urgent need. In fact, in 2017 63 percent of all animals at Operation Kindness came from shelter partners. Operation Kindness’ shelter partners know that they will treat any injury or illness if there’s an opportunity for the pet to have a good quality of life.

    “Operation Kindness cares for thousands of animals every year,” said Jim Hanophy, CEO of Operation Kindness. “Most of the animals we treat are from shelters who were going to euthanize the pet due to not having the proper medical treatments. Operation Kindness comes in and rescues the animal, treats them back to health and then finds them their forever homes. But the demand far exceeds the supply, which is why we are asking the North Texas community to help us “Stock Our Hospital.

    From life-saving surgeries to vaccinations, there are delightful gifts at all price points to show compassion while delighting a loved one, friend, client or employee. After selecting the Kindness Katalog donation gift on the shelter’s website, donors have the option to send the gift recipient an e-card or donor’s may opt to download a DIY versionOne hundred percent of the proceeds will directly benefit the medical needs of homeless animals at Operation Kindness.

Operation Kindness Celebrates National Adopt a Shelter Cat Month

Operation Kindness, North Texas’ original and largest no-kill animal shelter, celebrates Adopt a Shelter Cat Month by bringing their Kitten Snugglepalooza sessions to companies across Dallas-Fort Worth throughout the month of June.

With a minimum donation of $1000, DFW companies can schedule their own Kitten Snugglepalooza and Operation Kindness will do the rest! Each Kitten Snugglepalooza lasts two hours, and Operation Kindness’ staff will bring six to eight kittens to an enclosed area of the company where employees can greet and snuggle with the kittens. All funds raised through the Kitten Snugglepalooza will go toward paying for medical care of the animals and for food and supplies to refill the shelter’s Pet Food Pantry.

Kitten season runs from March until October and on average the shelter spends over $1 million in medical costs for the pets which includes cat and kitten care. The care provided by Operation Kindness includes veterinary costs such as vaccines, spay/neuter surgeries and medicine, and food for the cats and kittens.

“At this moment, we have already rescued 150 cats and kittens this year and anticipate rescuing 600 or more by the time kitten season ends,” said Operation Kindness CEO Jim Hanophy.

In addition, Operation Kindness hosts Work Paw Playdate, which brings puppies and dogs to businesses for a minimum $1000 donation.

The Warren Center's 50th Anniversary Celebration to be held April 21

DALLAS (April 17, 2018)—The Warren Center, a nonprofit agency that advocates for and serves children impacted by developmental disabilities and their families, will celebrate its 50th birthday with a 50th Anniversary Celebration Saturday, April 21, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Richardson, 503 N. Central Expressway, Richardson, TX 75080. The festive afternoon is packed with family activities, unlimited photo opportunities and catered food, and topped with headlining art activities by Dwayne Szot, founder and president of Zot Artz.

From the Midwest, Szot grew up in a foster home in which his foster siblings had cerebral palsy. As a result, he spent most of his childhood interacting with children and adults with disabilities. As he grew older, Szot developed an interest in mechanics and graphic arts, which led him to attend the Kendall College of Art and Design at Ferris University in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and later received a Master of Fine Arts from the Cranbrook Academy of Art. Heavily influenced by his upbringing, Szot worked with special education departments, hospitals and residential facilities. During this time he invented the first “painting wheelchair,” as well as various adaptive art tools for children of all abilities.

In 1990, Szot founded Zot Artz with a grant funded by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Rockefeller Foundation. Zot Artz’s mission is to create adaptive art tools for preschoolers, young children, teens, adults and seniors of all abilities and physical impairments, and has curated hundreds of special art events around the globe. The organization also makes these tools available to teachers, therapists, residential providers, hospitals and parks, and is now bringing the tools to the Dallas-Fort Worth community. In the last decade, Zot Artz tools and interactive experiences have been featured in multiple media outlets, including the Huffington Post and PBS.

“We are very excited to bring Dwayne Szot’s unique style of artistic expression to our children,” said Amy Spawn, executive director of The Warren Center. “It allows all the children we serve, no matter what limitations they face, to enjoy art and participate in creating something memorable.”

Presented by Reliant Energy, The Warren Center’s 50th Anniversary Celebration will include countless activities for the whole family, photo opportunities with superheroes and princesses alike, and balloon sculptures. In addition, a special award ceremony will take place during the event to honor community leaders who continue to advocate for children with developmental disabilities.

14,628-sq.-ft. Medical Facility to Help Provide a Second Chance to Homeless Pets

CARROLLTON, TX (April 6, 2018)—Operation Kindness, the original and largest no-kill shelter in North Texas, is pleased to announce phase one of the “Build. Save. Love: Creating Hope for Homeless Pets” capital campaign. Phase one of the three-phase $12 million campaign, includes the construction of a 14,628-square-foot medical wing addition to the shelter’s current campus located at 3201 Earhart Drive, Carrollton, TX 75006. Construction on the new medical wing is expected to begin in April 2018 and when finished will increase the shelter’s daily capacity by 24 percent and adoptions by 35 percent.

As the “go to” facility for 47 municipal shelters and rescue groups, who are unable to provide additional medical resources to homeless animals, Operation Kindness is beginning to outgrow its current campus. The highly anticipated $6 million medical wing will allow staff to expand its comprehensive medical care to homeless cats and dogs in North Texas.The new medical wing will include:

• A cutting-edge sanitation system installed throughout the facility. This system will decrease the amount of time spent on cleaning and sanitation and increase the amount of time focusing on the well-being and treating of the animals.
• Separate isolation and monitoring areas to provide adequate space for evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of more cats and dogs.
• Additional screened-in porches for cats and dogs to enjoy the outdoors during recovery after medical treatments.
• A complete administrative office suite, meeting and training spaces

“We celebrate the fact that Operation Kindness has broken adoption records for the past five years,” stated Jim Hanophy, CEO of Operation Kindness. “As an alternative for unnecessary euthanasia, Operation Kindness gladly takes in these animals, but the reality is we have outgrown our space and must expand our facilities. Soon we’ll provide even more homeless cats and dogs a second chance at a happy and healthy life.”

Since its inception, Operation Kindness has saved the lives of more than 100,000 animals and continues to work toward the prevention of animal euthanasia. In 2017, Operation Kindness was responsible for providing care to 5,090 animals and broke adoption records by assisting a total of 4,889 cats and dogs in finding forever homes. The new medical wing, and the future shelter improvements, made possible through the “Build. Save. Love: Creating Hope for Homeless Pets” capital campaign will allow the shelter to continue providing exceptional veterinary care and rehabilitation services to the increasing number of pets taken in by the shelter in the future.

The Rees-Jones Foundation is providing the lead gift for phase one of the “Build. Save. Love: Creating Hope for Homeless Pets” capital campaign to kick-start the construction of the medical wing. The Elsie and Marvin Dekelboum Family Foundation is providing funding for the surgical suite.

Third Annual Day of Giving is April 5

Operation Kindness – North Texas’ original and largest no-kill shelter invites the North Texas community to participate in its Day of Giving. Thanks to a generous benefactor, every gift made on April 5 will be matched dollar for dollar up to $10,000 to help Operation Kindness save more homeless animals.

The no-kill shelter assists more than 5,000 dogs and cats annually and cares for an average of 300 animals daily with another 100 to 150 animals in foster homes. In 2017, the medical staff performed 23,656 medical exams; 3,140 spay/neuter surgeries; 363 internal surgeries – including orthopedics, internal organs, hearts, eyes and wounds; and administered $200,000 worth of medicine to animals in need. Since its inception in 1976, Operation Kindness has saved the lives of more than 100,000 animals.

Many of the animals come to Operation Kindness from a network of shelter partners consisting of more than 47 shelters that are not equipped to provide the care these animals need to survive and thrive. Operation Kindness receives no funding from the government, instead relies solely on funds from donations, grants and adoption fees to care for homeless pets.

Recently, Operation Kindness received a call about a dog who had been roaming a country property for a few months. The owners of the property noticed her spending more time near a tree, so they investigated and discovered the she had given birth to seven puppies and had placed them in a tree stump to keep them safe. The mother, who has been named Missy, and her puppies were brought to Operation Kindness where they received vaccinations, heartworm preventative, full tummies and love. Missy is comfortable with people and proudly shows off her puppies to staff. Both Missy and her babies will be available for adoption once they’ve received all vaccinations.

Sushi, a four-month-old calico kitten suffering a broken leg was heartlessly thrown away into a dumpster. Fortunately, she was found and brought to Operation Kindness for medical care. The medical team performed the needed surgery to set her leg and is now treating her for an upper respiratory infection and scleral hemorrhage. Sushi is still in recovery, but the medical staff at Operation Kindness expect her to make a full recovery at which time she will be available for adoption.

“We rescue homeless pets like Missy and Sushi every day,” said Chief Executive Officer, Jim Hanophy. “We’ve been taking in many more animals with injuries and illnesses which means our medical expenses are increasing. This Day of Giving and the generous match are vital to our ability to continue to save homeless animals, treat their needs and find them new loving homes.”
