Artists for Animals – a Dallas-based nonprofit organization that brings local artists, sculptors, musicians, writers and animal lovers together to support North Texas animal rescue charities – has named TrizCom Public Relations as it’s agency of record.

“We are pleased to partner with TrizCom Public Relations to help share our story,” said Erin Hannigan, co-founder of Artists for Animals. “Artists for Animals is working hard to expand the reach and impact of our organization, programs and events to support more North Texas animal rescue groups, and with the support of TrizCom PR, we are confident we can continue to do the most good.”

Co-founders, professional photographer Teresa Berg and Dallas Symphony Orchestra’s principal oboist, Erin Hannigan, created Artists for Animals to combine their talents with many other artists, sculptors, musicians, writers and animal lovers to support animal rescue charities in North Texas. Since Artists for Animals began in 2012, the nonprofit has offered grants to assist animal groups in North Texas including Operation Kindness, Legacy Humane Society, The Street Dog Project, Sponsor Adoptions, Denison Animal Welfare Group and many more.

Artists for Animals hosts special programs and events throughout the year to help raise funds for North Texas’ animal rescue charities. Their signature event, Concert for Kindness, features a multimedia musical concert experience treating guests to an evening filled with symphony music, photography and art while raising funds and awareness for homeless animals in North Texas. Attendees are invited to sip wine and savor tasty treats while listening to musical performances by members of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra paired with an animal photography show by Teresa Berg. Each year, students from Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas create one-of-a-kind art pieces of adoptable pets that are available for purchase as silent auction items. The 2018 event will be held March 11 at Moody Performance Hall.

“Every team member at TrizCom PR is a pet parent, and many of us are artists as well, which makes this partnership a perfect fit,” said Jo Trizila, president and CEO of TrizCom PR. “We are thrilled to have Artists for Animals join our client roster. It is invigorating to see the North Texas artist community come together and support homeless pet philanthropy. Their passion for animals and giving back creates serial reciprocity; you can’t help but be energized by their passion. We look forward to sharing the Artists for Animals story, raising their awareness and actively participating in their growth.”

Public Relations Society of America – Dallas Chapter honored TrizCom Public Relations with four top tier awards, including two Pegasus Awards for Communications Excellence – corporate communications and nonprofit communications and the top honor, Best in Show – at their 2017 Awards Luncheon held Oct. 27 at Gilley’s Dallas.

As a company, Dallas-based TrizCom Public Relations received three PRSA Pegasus Awards: the Pegasus Award for Communications Excellence on behalf of Solis Mammography’s legislative campaign for House Bill 1036, mandating all private insurance providers cover 3-D mammography for breast cancer screening; the Pegasus Award for Communications Excellence on behalf of Heroes for Children’s campaign to make a wedding dream come true for Sarena Saad as part of their Milestones program; and the Pegasus Award – Best in Show for the Heroes for Children campaign. TrizCom account executive Katie Mudd received the Dallas Chapter of PRSA Outstanding Service Award.

“I continue to watch our company grow and position our clients with groundbreaking and strategically bold public relations work,” said Jo Trizila, CEO and president of TrizCom PR. “Boutique public relations agency work sometimes gets overlooked because of their staff size. Receiving the Best of Show and two Pegasus Awards affirms that boutique public relations agencies, like TrizCom PR, can and do produce creative, insightful data and objective-driven communications work that influence audiences. I am extremely proud of the work we do and the savvy team at TrizCom PR. However, while the honor of recognition as one of the top public relations companies in Dallas is always nice, the highest accolade we seek is in our clients, and their stakeholders, collective success and the ability to contribute and influence their brand.”

“A communications firm’s success doesn’t just happen – it takes a great team who think differently, are crazy creative, innovative and empowered to bring action to bold strategic ideas,” Trizila continued. “Company culture is often touted as one of the most important factors for a business’ long-term success. Part of TrizCom PR’s culture is community service and corporate responsibility. When a team member like Katie is recognized for going above and beyond for an organization, everyone wins. TrizCom PR steadfastly believes that for whom much is given, much is expected in return.”

The Pegasus Awards from Public Relations Society of America – Dallas recognize the most outstanding public relations and strategic communications efforts in the Dallas area and provide a constructive critique by an independent panel of judges, composed of public relations professionals, for each entry. The Pegasus Award is named after the iconic red Pegasus in downtown Dallas. It serves as a symbol of public relations excellence in Dallas and North Texas.

Operation Kindness – North Texas’ original and largest no-kill animal shelter – will raise funds and awareness for homeless animals with a little help from Texas Rangers Manager Jeff Banister and his wife Karen, who will serve as honorary co-chairs at this year’s 25th annual Canines, Cats & Cabernet to be held Nov. 18.

Jeff and Karen Banister have two children, Alexandra and Jacob, in addition to four furry family members including Labradors Bella and Scout, and two Maltese named Gracie and Cooper. They are passionate about pets and eager to support Operation Kindness’ mission of providing care for homeless cats and dogs in a no-kill environment until each is adopted into responsible homes and to advocate humane values and behavior.

“Canines, Cats & Cabernet gets bigger and better every year, and we are honored to celebrate our 25th anniversary of this event with Jeff and Karen Banister,” said Jim Hanophy, CEO of Operation Kindness. “We know that with their support we will be able to knock this year’s event out of the park.”

This will not be the first time the Banister family has stepped into the Dallas-Fort Worth charity spotlight. Karen is very involved with the Keller High School Baseball Boosters, serves on the Advisory Board of the Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation and assists with many charity endeavors with the Foundation and the Texas Rangers Wives. Karen and Jeff have also been very involved this past summer in raising funds for South Texas disaster relief efforts through sales of Texas Stand Tall T-shirts, which were designed by Jeff.

The 25th Annual Canines, Cats & Cabernet benefiting Operation Kindness will be held Saturday, Nov. 18, 2017, from 6 until 10 p.m. at Omni Hotel Downtown Dallas, located at 555 S. Lamar St. Guests will be treated to an elegant dinner featuring hors d' oeuvres, a mashed potato bar, carving stations, a dessert bar and complimentary wine, beer and coffee. For the first time ever, there will be a liquor pull featuring top shelf spirits in addition to a wide variety of live and silent auction items. For $50, guests in attendance and supporters who are unable to make the event can participate in the Grand Raffle. The winner will enjoy seven nights at an RCI RESORT in the city of their choice out of hundreds of locations all over the world. This package is valued at $4,200 and includes a $500 Visa gift card for airfare. To top it off, adorable cats and dogs will be seeking forever homes in the Adoption Lounge.

Advanced event tickets are $225 per person until 5 p.m. Nov. 10. Tickets will also be available for purchase at the door for $250 per person, but seating is not guaranteed. A limited number of raffle tickets will be available for $50 a piece. Ticket costs are tax-deductible. Event sponsorship packages are available starting at $1,500-$10,000. There are 7.3 million people in the United States who are vegetarians. The quest to satisfy bar-b-que cravings without the meat can prove elusive to many. Soulman’s Bar-B-Que is making it easy for vegetarians to enjoy their southern cuisine. The North Texas-based chain offers a wide variety of homestyle sides that, when paired together, can make a tasty, meat-free meal.

“It’s important to us that our restaurants offer menu items that are inclusive to different kinds of diets,” said Soulman’s CEO Brett Randle. “We pride ourselves in making tons of meat-free options that stay true to southern soul food and taste just as delicious as our meats.”

Vegetarians can enjoy some of Soulman’s world-famous sides, including potato salad, cole slaw, pinto beans, mashed potatoes and gravy, fresh cut French fries, fried okra, mac ‘n cheese and spicy potatoes. Looking for a dish you can’t find everywhere else? Try Soulman’s fan-favorite, Texas-style cream corn and mouthwatering pecan pie.

Soulman’s isn’t stingy with their sides, either. All homemade sides are available in many different sizes: side serving (4 ounces), medium serving (8 ounces), large serving (16 ounces) and family size (32 ounces). Additionally, vegetable sides are available in half-gallon and gallon sizes. For more information about Soulman’s menu items and pricing, visit www.soulmans.com/menu.

Celebrating National Mammography Day with Knowledge and Empowerment

The year 1977 saw a great many milestones – flare jeans were made famous by John Travolta’s role in “Saturday Night Fever”; the first “Star Wars” movie premiered; Apple II Computer debuted; Jimmy Carter was the 39th U.S. President; Orlando Bloom, Gavin DeGraw and Liv Tyler were born; and “Laverne & Shirley” was nearly tied with “Happy Days” as the most popular television show. Fast forward to 2017: women born in 1977 celebrate their fabulous 40th birthday this year – which also means it’s time for them to start getting their annual mammogram.

Why begin mammograms at age 40? The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American College of Radiology, the Society for Breast Imaging and the radiologists who practice at the nation's largest independent provider of breast screening services – Solis Mammography – all agree that a woman should begin regular, annual mammograms at age 40. Experts concur that the early detection afforded by regular, annual mammography offers the best opportunity for proactive and early treatment, minimizing the expense, stress and invasiveness that comes with later-stage diagnosis.

In honor of National Mammography Day on Oct. 20, Solis Mammography has created a guide to help prepare women for their first annual mammogram.

“I recently spoke to a group of 50 women about the importance of annual mammography. Of the group, five had just turned 40 and had not yet had their mammogram,” said Connie Oliver, vice president of marketing for Solis. “No surprise, they were dreading it. By the end of the talk, they were reassured and ready to schedule. This solidifies what we already know – that women empowered with knowledge, and not with fear-based hyperbole, will make the right decision for their unique health.”

The Power to Choose: If a woman isn’t experiencing any symptoms or concerns and is 40 years and older, she doesn’t need a physician’s order to get her annual screening mammogram (2-D or 3-D). She can choose the facility of her choice – preferably a facility that specializes in breast screening. This freedom means a woman can and should choose providers based on attributes most important to her – convenient locations, patient-centric services, the latest in technology and specialization in her area of need.

Questions to Ask: As with most healthcare fields, specialists offer better expertise than generalists. For this reason, find a facility that is a dedicated breast screening center. These centers should offer fellowship-trained, breast-dedicated radiologists who read a high volume of both screening and diagnostic mammograms through “batch reading.” This protocol focuses on interpretation of screening mammograms without interruption, ensuring the most accurate readings. And staff technologists dedicated to breast health are experts in knowing how much compression is enough to get a good image but not too much as to cause unnecessary discomfort.

Results: When choosing your provider, ask how and when results will be delivered. Understanding most women find the waiting for their mammography result to be the most stressful part of the procedure, Solis Mammography delivers results to patients fast, usually within 24 to 48 hours. Results are delivered by secure email, meaning women get their results wherever they may be. This delivers peace of mind sooner, helping women avoid the unnecessary stress that comes from not knowing.

Insist on 3-D: The new standard of care in mammography is digital breast tomosynthesis – otherwise known as 3-D mammography. More than 140 clinical studies have shown 3-D to deliver superior results over the conventional 2-D mammogram, improving detection by 54 percent and minimizing recalls by 37 percent. The process of getting a 3-D mammogram is nearly identical to conventional 2-D screening. X-rays will be taken of both breasts (one at a time). Each compression lasts about 30 seconds, and the entire procedure only takes 5 to 10 minutes. The only difference is that in the 3-D mammogram, the arm of the screening unit arcs around the breast, allowing upwards of 60-plus images of each breast – offering significantly better views for the radiologist to evaluate.

Will it Hurt? Mammograms should be a little uncomfortable, but should not be painful. Again, technologists who are specialists in breast health are highly trained in understanding the unique nature of breast tissue, knowing how much compression to use to get the best images, while still minimizing unnecessary discomfort for the patient. At breast-dedicated Solis Mammography, 89 percent of patients over the past three years have reported that they experienced “little to no discomfort” during their mammogram.

How Much Time to Allocate? To plan accordingly, patients should ask how long the appointment will be, start to finish. The entire visit, from arrival to exit, at Solis Mammography typically takes about 30 minutes.

Cost: With the passage of the Affordable Care Act in 2010, 2-D mammography is covered 100 percent by nearly all insurance plans. Additionally, Medicare and nearly all major private insurers are now also covering 3-D mammography at 100 percent. Check with your provider to be sure 3-D is covered.

When to Arrive? Arrive 10 to 15 minutes before the scheduled appointment time with the following items: insurance card, driver’s license and the name of the physician to whom your results should be sent.

What to Wear? Wear a two-piece outfit, as patients will be asked to remove their top garments only. The facility will offer some type of cover-up to wear on top. At Solis Mammography, these are fabric capes with multiple snaps, to maximize privacy and comfort.

Things to Avoid: On the day of the appointment, women should not wear lotion, baby powder, cosmetics, perfume or deodorant underneath their arms or on their breasts. Contents in these substances can sometimes appear on the image. Also, some women prefer not to have their mammogram the week before their menstrual cycle as breasts may be tender or swollen. However, menstrual cycles do not affect mammography results.

Ask Questions: The unknown is scary. Ask questions at any time – from the moment one decides to schedule all the way through the exam, including billing. Also, check out the FAQs under Patient Resources on Solis Mammography’s website at https://www.SolisMammo.com/patient-resources

Bring a Buddy: What better way to start one’s 40th birthday, and maybe a new annual tradition, than to celebrate friendship and health? Go with a friend to calm any nerves or anxiety – yours or hers. After the exam, do something you both enjoy like lunch, shopping or an afternoon matinee.

“Let’s face it, no one really wants to get a mammogram,” Oliver stated. “What we want is peace of mind: the peace of mind that we are all clear for another year – 93 percent of patients get a clean bill of health, or the peace of mind that comes from early detection, thus offering the best and least invasive options for treatment.”

Adopting a pet is now easier than ever through Operation Kindness. North Texas’ original and largest no-kill animal care and adoption center received a new mobile adoption trailer from Pet Supplies Plus. The adoption trailer will make it possible for Operation Kindness to transport furry friends to adoption events across the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

"Pet Supplies Plus has partnered with Operation Kindness for many years and now has dedicated adoption rooms in several of our DFW stores,” said Caleb Lopez, marketing director of Pet Supplies Plus. “We're thrilled to continue expanding our support and partnership by now providing Operation Kindness with a mobile adoption trailer that helps expand their adoptions and place even more animals in their forever homes. Operation Kindness is fantastic, and we're excited to see how this new program benefits pets and pet lovers throughout DFW."

To pull the new mobile trailer, Operation Kindness also received funds from Muenster Dog Food Company to purchase a discounted van from Sam Pack Ford-Plano. Operation Kindness will use the van and air-conditioned adoption trailer to transport dogs and cats to adoption events hosted at Pet Supplies Plus locations across the community. At these locations, families looking to adopt a pet can visit with dogs and cats that are searching for their forever home.

“We’re a fourth-generation Texas family business, we live and work here, so it’s a no-brainer that we would support the organizations that are doing the most good here,” said Mitch Felderhoff, owner at Muenster Pet Foods. “We hope by providing Operation Kindness with a van to transport the adoption trailer, that they are able to reach new communities and find forever homes for pets across the Metroplex.”

Operation Kindness does not receive government funding and relies solely on funds from donations and corporate sponsorships to care for homeless animals. Since 1976, Operation Kindness has saved more than 90,000 dogs and cats. Each life saved by Operation Kindness costs an average of $398 to provide comprehensive care before adoption; in some cases, the costs are higher for animals that have been injured and require lifesaving surgeries.

Last year alone, Operation Kindness was able to save the lives and find forever homes for 4,566 animals. The on-site medical hospital provided care to 4,887 animals; performed 2,875 spay/neuter surgeries, 20,656 exams and 250 medical surgeries; gave more than $100,000 worth of medicine; and provided more than 292,000 meals.

For more information about Operation Kindness and to find an adoption event near you, please visit http://operationkindness.org.

Fall brings cooler temperatures, the beginning of a new school year, pumpkin-flavored treats galore and the return of football season. Along with these fall favorites, October brings a sea of pink, marking the arrival of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Pink appears everywhere, from the grocery store to the NFL football field.

Many organizations have aided in breast cancer research, advocacy and education, and Solis Mammography, the nation’s largest independent provider of breast screening services, applauds this important work. Since 1982, the pink ribbon has been associated with breast cancer awareness and has made it acceptable for men and women to talk more openly about women’s breast health.

With the rise in advocacy and awareness, still very little is reported on mammography during the month of October. Per the American Cancer Society, mammography is the “single, most effective method of early detection in the fight against breast cancer.” Mammograms can detect breast health concerns long before any physical symptoms, such as lumps, become apparent to a woman performing a self-exam or even to a trained physician conducting a manual exam. Annual mammography provides women the opportunity to find any issue at its earliest possible stage, thus reducing the cost, invasiveness and anxiety associated with later stage diagnosis.

And yet, the sad reality is that almost half of insurance-carrying American women, do not get their annual mammogram. This is especially concerning since, with the passage of the Affordable Care Act in 2010, 2-D mammography is covered 100 percent by nearly all insurance plans. Additionally, Medicare and nearly all of the major private insurers are now also covering 3-D mammography at 100 percent.

With more than 700,000 procedures forecasted this year, Solis Mammography emphasizes October as a time to remind women to be proactive about their breast health. “Simply put, mammography is the closest thing we have to a cure. The difference between early stage diagnosis, which is caught in annual screening mammograms beginning at age 40, and later stage diagnosis is astonishing. Just imagine catching an anomaly at the size of a pea versus the size of a walnut,” said Connie Oliver, vice president of marketing for Solis Mammography.

Since football is in the air, and because Solis Mammography is steadfast in its belief that the best offense in the fight against breast cancer is a great defense (early detection), they created a Breast Health Playbook.

Breast Health Playbook – Facts To Know Before You Go:

 COACH YOURSELF AND OTHER TEAMMATES:

    • Know the difference between 2-D and 3-D mammography. While conventional 2-D mammography was a significant step forward for its time, it has been dramatically surpassed by the improved technology of 3-D mammography (also known as digital breast tomosynthesis.) It is the best and most advanced technology for early detection of breast cancer. In 2013, peer-reviewed research, co-authored by Solis Mammography’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Stephen Rose, demonstrated that 3-D mammography increases early detection of breast cancer by 54 percent and decreases recall rates by 37 percent.
    • Women should check their insurance plan for 3-D mammography coverage. While Medicare and most private insurance companies now cover 3-D, be sure to ask and make sure. Also, regardless which provider you choose, make sure they offer 3-D mammography screening.
    • If visiting a new facility, have previous mammography scans sent to them. The films are electronic, and this should be an easy process.  At Solis Mammography, they’ll retrieve the records for you, upon request.
    • While health is important year-round, October is a time to take stock of friends and loved ones – especially those who might be reticent to get their mammogram.  Encourage them to get their screening; offer to go with them; and help them understand the benefits of early detection.

 SPECIAL TEAMS:

    • A mammogram in not just a mammogram. In the search for the right provider (because patients DO have a choice), find a facility that is a dedicated to breast screening. Make sure the center is staffed by fellowship-trained or dedicated breast radiologists (radiologists who read a high volume of both screening and diagnostic mammograms). Also ask if they employ “batch reading” (a process of interpreting screening mammograms without interruption, ensuring the most accurate results.) And finally, ask if the radiologist is trained and experienced at reading 3-D mammography.

TIME OUT:

    • For any exam, it is best to arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment time to prepare. Patients should bring their insurance cards, driver’s license and the name of the physician to whom results should be sent.
    • Ask the facility when and how patients will be notified of their results. Solis Mammography understands the anxiety that often accompanies waiting for the mammogram result which is why they deliver results via secure email within 24 to 48 hours of your visit.

UNIFORM:

    • Solis Mammography recommends women wear a two-piece outfit on the day of their mammogram, as they will be asked to remove their top garments only. The facility will provide women with a wrap or robe to wear.
    • On the day of the appointment, don’t wear deodorant, antiperspirant, lotion, or perfume. Some of these items contain substances that can show up on the X-ray as white spots. It is recommended for patients to bring these items with them to put on after the mammogram.

THE PLAYBOOK:

    • Remember, a strong defense is the best offense in the fight against breast cancer. When a woman participates in her breast health by getting regular, annual mammograms, she ensures that should any issue ever be detected, it will be at its smallest possible size and thus easiest to treat.  The average size of an anomaly found through annual mammograms is the size of a pea. The average size of an anomaly found through occasional self-exam is the size of a walnut. This size difference can and does have a dramatic impact on both treatment options, cost, and long-term outcome.

This October, Solis Mammography wants to create a movement of action and invites everyone to be proactive in their individual quest for breast health. Women need to not only get their own mammogram every year beginning at age 40, but also talk to friends, family, and loved ones to encourage them to do the same. If patients and providers alike do their job with mammogram awareness, then wellness and prevention in breast health will outpace the need for invasive healthcare treatment. Together, we can turn Team Awareness into Team Action and score significant strides in the fight for breast health.
