Operation Kindness is helping keep bellies and houses full starting this month. North Texas’ original and largest no-kill animal care and adoption center is feeding pets across the metroplex with the launch of the Operation Kindness Pet Food Pantry. The pantry is designed to lower the number of pets surrendered to shelters by providing temporary free cat and dog food to qualified low-income families.

“Economic reasons account for 25 percent of the pets surrendered per year, and our goal is to lower that,” said Jim Hanophy, CEO of Operation Kindness. “Our vision is a world where all cats and dogs have loving, responsible, forever homes and this pantry is going to help keep pets out of shelters and in their homes.”

The Operation Kindness Pet Food Pantry, which will serve pet owners in the DFW area, is projected to open August 19th. The pantry will provide free pet food as well as cat litter and flea and tick prevention for up to three months to owners with a clear financial need. Pet owners seeking assistance will be able to apply online, once qualified they will be able to pick up pet food at the Operation Kindness Shelter on the third Saturday and second Wednesday of every month between the hours of 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. In addition, Operation Kindness is working with partners across the community to establish more distribution locations.

The Operation Kindness Pet Food Pantry is taking over for the North Texas Pet Food Pantry, to fulfill the growing needs of the community.

“I’m so honored that the hard work and effort that went into the North Texas Pet Food Pantry will be sustained by Operation Kindness,” said Cheryl Spencer, President and founder of the North Texas Pet Food Pantry. “This pet food pantry is such a vital part of the community and I’m grateful that it will be continued on.”

In association with the Pet Food Pantry, Operation Kindness is launching the Royal Vaccination Fund to help provide low-income families with access to rabies, parvo and distemper vaccinations. This program is inspired by an Operation Kindness foster family who experienced the devastation of distemper, when their foster dog Princess lost six puppies to distemper. To help get the program started Artists for Animals has matched the first donation of $2,500. Canine distemper is a contagious and serious, often fatal, disease caused by a virus that attacks the respiratory, gastrointestinal and nervous systems of puppies and dogs.

The virus can also be found in wildlife such as foxes, wolves, coyotes, raccoons, skunks, mink and ferrets and has been reported in lions, tigers, leopards and other wild cats as well as seals. All dogs are at risk but puppies younger than four months old and dogs that have not been vaccinated against canine distemper are at increased risk of acquiring the disease.

To help with the launch of the Operation Kindness Pet Food Pantry, the no-kill animal shelter is seeking volunteers to assist with donation and supply pick up and pet food distribution. Operation Kindness also welcomes donations of dog and cat food and encourages companies, schools and other organizations to conduct food donation drives.

In honor of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, Heroes for Children and Wipe Out Kids’ Cancer are partnering to host the Heart of Gold 5K Run for the Children presented by Tom Thumb on Sept. 16, 2017, at the Plaza at Galatyn Park in Richardson.

“We believe that joining forces in our work to end childhood cancer will generate an even greater impact in our efforts to achieve our joint missions,” said Larissa Linton, cofounder and executive director of Heroes for Children. “Over the last five years, we have served 33 percent of the same families. It seems natural that we come together to support and celebrate these families together.”

The assistance Heroes for Children provides directly to families helps relieve some of the financial strain and stress during these difficult times in their lives. Whether it is to pay a medical bill, buy gas for the frequent trips to the hospital or keep a family from having their electricity turned off, Heroes for Children is committed to helping families when they need it most. Wipe Out Kids' Cancer® is dedicated to raising awareness and funding for pediatric cancer research on a national level.  They fund critical research initiatives and provide social support services through programs that adopt families battling the disease to give experiences and enable social support while they go through treatment.

“Collaboration instead of competition in our sector will be the landscape of the future, and we are proud to lead with that example” said Chandini Portteus, president and CEO of Wipe Out Kids’ Cancer. “By partnering together, we create efficiencies that result in more money and time available to meet our mission- more progress to cures, more access to social solutions and ultimately a cure for this disease.”

In keeping up with the annual tradition, the event will begin with a commemorative balloon release sponsored by 4Change Energy, celebrating the families served throughout the year and honoring the memory of Taylor Brewton and Allison “Allie”  Scott who both passed away from Leukemia. Following the balloon release, participants of all ages can join in the Fun Run & 5K. Entertainment features a DJ and an Adventure Zone with games, activities, bounce houses, and a special area to honor and remember children who have battled cancer. The Heart of Gold 5K & Fun Run will also include prizes, awards, giveaways and food.

There’s no better way to celebrate love than with all the things the South loves most. From menu to decor to venue, a rustic wedding has become one of the most sought-after wedding trends. At the heart of any country wedding should be the heart of the South – good, old-fashioned, comfort food.

Satisfied couples have been celebrating their “Happily Ever After” with Soulman’s Bar-B-Que. The company’s signature hickory-smoked meats include beef, sausage, hot links, pulled pork, turkey, ham, chicken and ribs. In addition, Soulman’s offers a wide variety of southern, homestyle sides perfect for making guests feel right at home. Soulman’s will even customize the serving line to match the wedding colors and theme.

“Good food and family are the two things that Soulman’s values most,” said Soulman’s catering specialist Amber Polk. “We’ve always considered our customers as family, so there’s nothing better than getting to be a part of someone’s special day.”

In addition to menu, trying these unique ideas will be sure to add some southern charm to any wedding:

  • Scout out an old barn to use as the venue for the perfect combination of rustic and glam that will make everyone feel right at home.
  • Sunflowers are the go-to flower for southern weddings. Use them in the bridal bouquet for a bold statement, or add them to centerpieces for a pop of color that will be sure to brighten the whole day.
  • Take a load off guests’ feet by substituting hay bales for chairs during the ceremony. Top with plaid or quilted throws for some vintage flair!
  • Wooden signs are essential for both wedding and reception. Grab some old wood and a friend with great penmanship and create personalized direction signs, food menus and seating charts.
  • Sweet tea is the elixir of the South and is essential for any wedding below the Mason-Dixon Line. Fun flavors like peach or blueberry can be added for an extra twist.
  • Mason jars are a must-have in any rustic wedding. From centerpieces to lamp fixtures to food storage, they’ll add just the right amount of homemade charm.
  • Keep everyone entertained after the ceremony with a game of cornhole played on customized boards for the newlyweds.

Potential clients can submit their information online at Soulmans.com, and Soulman’s will be in touch within 24 hours. Soulman’s Bar-B-Que Party Packs are available for a minimum of 10 people, delivery service is offered for parties of 25 or more, and full service catering is provided for events with 50 or more guests. Soulman’s catering is able to produce cocktail hours, action stations, carving stations, bridal suite lunch packages, custom menus, desserts, customized disposables and much more!

When the DFW Summer Boat Expo returns to Market Hall in July, on display will be the best and brightest in nautical lighting trends in, on and under the water.

“The lighting and accessories are always strong draws for our guests,” said Bron Beal, executive director of the DFW Boat Expo. “There continue to be innovations and ways that people can distinguish their boats and other watercraft through unique lighting, especially LED lighting.”

The revolutionary marine LED lights can illuminate just about anywhere they are needed and increase safety at night. Boaters benefit several ways. LED lights use only 10-20 percent of the power needed by traditional incandescent bulbs and also save power compared to fluorescent lights. LEDs can operate at lower temperatures and tolerate vibration better than incandescent bulbs. Their service life surpasses traditional lights, with some LED lights able to last for up to 50,000 hours.

LED lights also have multiple uses out on the water. For utility purposes, they can help with navigation, illuminate a dock, attract fish and light the water for nighttime swimming and diving. The lights are both functional and fun. For decorative purposes, they can illuminate a cabin, light up a deck and add an accent glow to a console. Some of the higher-end systems can even connect to Wi-Fi and iTunes, causing the lights to pulse to the beat of the music and creating the perfect party atmosphere.

“Our crowds love to see how many customizable options there are for living a life on the water! And after our record-breaking DFW Summer Boat Expo in 2016, it seems fitting that we keep the party going in 2017.”
