Texas Womans, Bezos Academy Celebrate Opening of Largest Bezos Academy Preschool in Texas

Texas Womans University, Bezos Academy, the City of Denton and Texas Womens Foundation celebrated the opening of Bezos Academy Denton Wednesday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new $6 million preschool located on the Texas Womans University campus.

The six-classroom preschool at 1820 Frame St. is the largest Bezos Academy preschool in Texas and will provide full-day preschool at no cost to families for up to 120 children ages 3 to 5. The school officially opens to students Sept. 8.

Texas Womans University Chancellor and President Carine M. Feyten joined Bezos Academy Chief Learning Officer Dr. Brandi Kenner,Denton Mayor Chris Watts and Texas Womens Foundation President and CEO Karen Hughes White for remarks before participating in the ceremonial ribbon cutting. Following the ceremony, guests toured the new preschool.

Texas Womans has long recognized the financial hardships that many of our student-parents face, particularly when it comes to childcare, and for them this academy is a true gamechanger, said TWU Chancellor Carine Feyten. Texas Womans, Bezos Academy and the City of Denton have a shared mission to develop lifelong learners and leaders by increasing educational access and this academy will help us achieve that.

The preschool was constructed on university-owned land through a partnership involving Texas Womans University, Bezos Academy and the City of Denton. The city contributed $1.5 million toward the $6 million project.

Bezos Academy Denton will offer full-day, Montessori-inspired preschool at no cost to families served, through fully funded scholarships. Meals, educational materials and other programming also are provided at no cost. Twenty percent of the preschools seats are reserved for children of TWU students, faculty and staff, with the remaining 80% available to families in the surrounding community.

The opening comes at a time when the affordability and availability of quality child care continue to present challenges for Texas families. Child care in Texas costs approximately $11,000 annually, an amount comparable to state college tuition, according to Texas Womens Foundation. In Dallas County, child care costs represent approximately 12.5% of median family income.

The economic implications extend beyond individual families. Texas Womens Foundation estimates that parents missing work because of inadequate access to child care and preschool could result in cumulative economic losses of $562 million to $859 million in Dallas County and $5.5 billion to $8.3 billion statewide over the next decade.

During Wednesdays ceremony, Hughes White addressed the importance of access to child care for Texas families and findings from Texas Womens Foundations Addressing the Texas Childcare Crisis research, while Watts spoke about the City of Dentons partnership and support for the project. Kenner discussed Bezos Academys mission, curriculum and approach to early childhood education.

More than 90% of a childs brain development occurs before age 5, making early childhood a critical period for learning and development. High-quality preschool can help children establish foundational language, literacy, math and social-emotional skills that support their transition to kindergarten and elementary school.

Halloween Celebration Saturday, Oct. 31

Halloween at Scarborough's Hollow combines beloved fall traditions with immersive fantasy adventures. Texas Woman's University (TWU) and Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas launched a strategic partnership that creates expanded admissions, scholarship and college readiness opportunities for Gold Award Girl Scouts.

TWU and Girl Scouts leaders celebrated the partnership during Thursdays signing ceremony at Texas Woman's University's Brackenridge Hall Auditorium. The agreement establishes a framework for ongoing collaboration between the two organizations while strengthening the pipeline of future women leaders through education, leadership and service.

"As Texas Woman's University celebrates its 125th anniversary, this partnership reflects our longstanding commitment to recognizing leadership and expanding educational opportunity for women," said Dr. Carine Feyten, chancellor and president of Texas Woman's University. "Gold Award Girl Scouts have already demonstrated the perseverance, initiative and service that define exceptional leaders. We are proud to recognize those accomplishments and help these young women continue their leadership journey at Texas Woman's."

Through the partnership, eligible Gold Award Girl Scouts will receive admission consideration after completing their junior year of high school, subject to university admission requirements. Before Texas women could vote, they could pursue a higher education at the Girls Industrial College, a one-building campus in Denton, a rural North Texas community known at the time primarily for agriculture and trade.

Founded in 1901 after years of persistent advocacy by civic leaders and women-led organizations and graduating just one student in its inaugural class Texas Womans University began as a little-known but ambitious effort to expand educational opportunity for Texas women. Today, it is a nationally recognized, Carnegie-classified R2 research institution and the nations first and only woman-focused public university system, with an enrollment of more than 15,000 across campuses in Denton, Dallas and Houston and a network of more than 121,000 alumni spanning Texas and beyond.

At the heart of the exhibit are selections from The Woman's Collection, one of the nation's oldest and largest repositories dedicated to women's history, alongside materials preserved through the university archives. Established in 1932 and designated Texas' official women's history collection in 1979, The Woman's Collection curates stories ranging from nationally known trailblazers to everyday women whose quieter lives helped shape communities, professions and families across generations.

ADDITIONAL BACKGROUND

At its core, this exhibit is about peoplethe administrators, faculty, staff, students and alumnae who changed the landscape of TWU over time and were pioneers in every sense of the word, said Suzanne Sellers, dean of libraries. Each piece tells a story of new trails blazed for womennot just in access to higher education, but as entrepreneurs, pilots, politicians, healers and educators who broke barriers in fields that had long excluded them.

The story of Texas Womans University began long before the institution opened its doors. Throughout the 1890s, civic leaders and women-led organizations advocated for the establishment of a college where young women could receive a practical education at a time when opportunities for women were sharply limited. In 1901, the Texas Legislature authorized the founding of what would become the Girls Industrial College, combining traditional literary education with instruction in domestic sciences, child care and practical nursing.

When classes began in 1903, the institution enrolled 186 students and employed a faculty of 14. Its curriculum reflected both the realities and aspirations of the time, offering courses ranging from photography, bookkeeping and literary studies to horticulture, nursing care, child development and the chemical study of foods. Helen M. Stoddard, Mary Eleanor Brackenridge and Eliza S. R. Johnson served among the universitys original board of regents, becoming the first women to sit on the governing board of a Texas university. Over time, TWU expanded both its curriculum and access, responding to and often shaping expanding opportunities for women in higher education and professional life. Texas Womans University to unveil permanent sculpture by artist Bianca Beck

In celebration of its 125th anniversary, Texas Womans University has selected Portland-based artist Bianca Beck to create a site-specific, permanent outdoor installation marking the universitys 125th anniversary and the culmination of its Dream Big fundraising campaign, which concludes this year and is expected to exceed its $125 million goal. The artwork will be on view from October 24, 2026 on the universitys Denton campus.

The artwork will consist of three large-scale, biomorphic sculptures fabricated in fiberglass with steel armatures, designed to withstand the elements while maintaining a dynamic sense of movement and transformation. Conceived as body doubles, these forms evoke the Platonic myth of an original, unified human body, reimagined here as fluid, intertwined figures that shift in appearance as viewers move around them. Becks sculptures occupy a space between painting and sculpture, their vividly expressive surfaces responding intuitively to form and environment, and activating the surrounding landscape through color, scale, and gesture.

These figures are not fixed, Beck notes. They are in the act of becoming. They are shaped as much by the viewers movement and perception as by their own internal logic. What appears as a solitary stride may, from another vantage point, become an embrace. Im interested in how we hold multiplicity, and how identity, community, and resilience emerge through connection.

In recent years, Beck has expanded their practice into increasingly ambitious public and outdoor presentations, with works exhibited at institutions including the Ulrich Museum of Art, Wichita, KS; deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, Lincoln, MA; the Shelburne Museum of Art, Shelburne, VT; and the FLAG Art Foundation, New York, NY. Beck will open a solo exhibition of new large-scale indoor sculptures at the Center for Maine Contemporary Art this May.

Becks special presentation has been commissioned to celebrate Texas Womans 125^th anniversary and the successful conclusion of Dream Big, the universitys first comprehensive fundraising campaign.

Texas Womans is the nations first and only woman-focused university system, with campuses in Denton, Dallas, and Houston. Established by the Texas Legislature in 1901 as a small industrial training college for women, the university has grown into a Carnegie-classified R2 research institution nationally recognized for student experience, social and economic mobility, and academic quality. Recent milestones include the opening of a $107 million Health Sciences Center and the launch of the Doswell School of Aeronautical Sciences, a woman-focused aviation program. The university is widely known for its leadership in nursing, education, the health professions, nutrition, the arts and sciences, and business.

A defining element of Becks installation is its aesthetic alignment with the three pillars of the Dream Big campaignOpen Doors, Fuel Innovation, and Cultivate Gritcreating a visual expression of movement, transformation, and resilience.

Becks work embodies the spirit of the Dream Big campaign, said Jaime Porter, TWUs vice president for university advancement and alumni engagement. These sculptures speak to growth, creative movement and strength qualities reflected in our students, alumni and donors.

Dallas Architecture-Themed Form Follows Fitness 5K Surpasses $2 Million Raised Since its Inception

On Saturday, May 16, Dallas signature architecture-themed race celebrated another milestone year as the Form Follows Fitness 5K, presented by Blackson Brick, gathered more than 60 runners, walkers, architects, designers, civic leaders and community supporters at Community Beer Company for a ceremonial check presentation benefiting The Architecture and Design Foundation. The brewery hosted four social runs leading up to the 2026 race and will host monthly runs on the third Saturday of each month through January 2027.

The 2026 race season generated $221,358.07, the third-highest fundraising total in event history, helping bring the races lifetime charitable impact to more than $2 million raised. The event also celebrated its 15th anniversary year, setting records with 3,973 registrations, $308,000 in sponsorship revenue and 184 industry teams participating. Throughout its 15-year history, 44,588 participants have taken part in the 5K.

The ceremonial presentation recognized the impact of a community event that has evolved far beyond a race. Form Follows Fitness has united the architecture, engineering, construction, planning and fitness communities to raise funds that create opportunities for students, support research, expand public education and connect residents to the beauty and importance of the built environment.

The morning also spotlighted the future of architecture, design and civic innovation. Following the presentation, an air horn sounded as runners and walkers began the first official monthly social run leading into the 2027 race season.

The AD EX Form Follows Fitness 5K really began from a simple moment of inspiration during a Saturday morning AD EX Arts District Walking Tour in 2010, said Patrick Glenn, AIA, LEED AP, ALEP, LE Fellow, Form Follows Fitness 5K founder. As Briar Glenn and I were experiencing the energy of the Dallas Arts District, we started talking about how incredible it would be to create an event that connected health, community and architecture in a more visible and engaging way. What started as a meaningful idea has grown into a Dallas tradition that celebrates architecture, promotes public engagement and supports educational programs and scholarships for future generations of designers and architects.

Glenn said one of the events greatest achievements has been strengthening the connection between the public and the architecture and design community while supporting educational initiatives and scholarships.

Seeing the lasting impact this event has had on both our profession and the broader Dallas community is something I am incredibly proud of, Glenn said. I am excited to see how we can continue to grow that message and impact for the next 15 years.

For Briar Glenn, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, Form Follows Fitness 5K co-founder, the races continued growth reflects the power of community collaboration.

Celebrating the Form Follows Fitness 5Ks 15th anniversary is a tremendous milestone, Glenn said. What began as an idea to bring our industry colleagues, partners and the community together around a shared commitment to wellness and the celebration of Dallas iconic architecture has grown into something far greater than Patrick and I ever imagined.

She said the race has become the Foundations largest single fundraising effort while helping expand programs such as Build Your City!, the Exhibition Series, Architecture and Design Exchange programming and Designing My Future Camps.

Beyond race day, the 5K has become a catalyst for deeper community engagement, meaningful industry partnerships and new opportunities to inspire the next generation through the power of architecture and design, Glenn said.

Norman Alston, FAIA, president-elect of The Architecture and Design Foundation, believes the race perfectly reflects Dallas architectural spirit.

I love that the Form Follows Fitness 5K was born out of walking through our city and looking at the architecture, Alston said. Its testimony to the quality of Dallas architecture that, besides being beautiful, it can inspire people in other important aspects of their lives.

The races unique atmosphere and citywide appeal continue to resonate with participants and organizers alike, according to Eric Lindberg, race director for the Form Follows Fitness 5K.

Every year, the commitment and support from the architecture industry for the race blows me away, Lindberg said. Its the largest industry gathering in North Texas and I pause when I call it a race because its truly an event for all, including architecture, the running and walking community, families, friends and coworkers.

Lindberg added that the course remains one of the events signature experiences as participants travel through the West End, Downtown, the Arts District and Uptown before finishing at Klyde Warren Park.

Marc Blackson, president of Blackson Brick, said supporting the event aligns naturally with the companys mission and values.

Texas Womans University Hosts Free BALANCE Docuseries Screenings and Panels

A new docuseries produced by a North Texas researcher and Texas Womans University alumna is helping bring long-overdue visibility to perimenopausean experience that affects every woman, yet historically receives limited attention in research, education and public conversation.

Texas Womans will host a series of free public screenings of BALANCE: A Perimenopause Journey across its campuses in Denton, Dallas and Houston this spring, each followed by a panel discussion and audience Q&A featuring experts in womens health. View the BALANCE trailer.

Monks dont typically come to mind when talking about menopause. But in BALANCE, filmmakers Sadhvi Siddhali Shree and Sadhvi Anubhutimillennial Jain monks based in North Texasset out to better understand their own experiences with perimenopause, thus launching a journey that uncovers a broader story about the origins of menopause misinformation, gaps in womens midlife care, and the need for more open, informed conversations.

Produced by researcher, advocate and TWU alumna Stephanie Collins, the four-part docuseries blends personal storytelling with expert insight, exploring symptoms such as anxiety, insomnia and fatigue, while examining the historical and cultural factors that have shaped how menopause is understood and treated. The series is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV, and has drawn national attention and support from high-profile health care experts and Alyssa Milano, who serves as an executive producer.

A highlight of each TWU event will be a panel discussion and audience Q&A moderated by Collins, which will offer an intriguing opportunity for a post-viewing conversation and extended dialogue about womens health. Joining the conversation will be Dr. Sarah Berg, a nationally-noted obstetrician-gynecologist and Menopause Society Certified Practitioner who specializes in midlife womens health and advances menopause education through speaking, writing and digital learning initiatives, including Selfority, a menopause information platform.

Menopause is something every woman will experience, yet for centuries its been pushed into the shadows, Collins said. Im proud to be part of the growing dialogue bringing this issue into the light and the effort to help women better understand their options. As a TWU alumna, its especially meaningful to bring BALANCE to my own universityan institution committed to the idea that when you educate a woman, you empower the world. That belief is at the heart of this project, which is about giving women the knowledge they need to take control of their menopause journey.

Jaime Porter, TWUs interim vice president for university advancement, said the screenings reflect TWUs commitment to advancing conversations that impact health care, as well as the universitys continued investment in womens health research.

Texas Womans is currently exploring a proposal to expand its Institute for Womens Health, with a focus on advancing research related to perimenopause and midlife health. The planning effort, led by a team that included Collins and supported by a grant from the Texas Womens Foundation, would further position TWU as a leader in addressing critical gaps in womens health.

Were excited that Texas Womans is taking part in this growing conversation, and delighted by the opportunity to celebrate the work of one of our alumnae, Porter said. Almost 90 percent of our students are women and nearly half of our students pursue careers in health care, so this is an issue that directly connects to our mission. These events offer a valuable opportunity for our community to engage with the topic and participate in thoughtful panel discussions with experts in the field.

The annual awards are voted on by Renaissance festival fans nationwide and celebrate the artisans, performers and creative talents who bring the magic of the Renaissance to life each season.

The 2026 season will also welcome back two award-winning performers recognized in this years Renaissance Festival Awards: Tartanic, named Favorite Instrumental Group, and fan favorite Opal the Fairy, who placed third in Favorite Faery, bringing their celebrated talents back to the Scarborough stage.

The recognition comes as Scarborough Renaissance Festival prepares to celebrate its milestone 45th season in 2026, continuing a decades-long North Texas tradition that draws visitors from across the state and beyond.

The festival runs April 4 through May 25, 2026, open Saturdays, Sundays and Memorial Day Monday, transforming a 25-acre English village in Waxahachie into a fully immersive 16th-century celebration of history, entertainment and adventure.

The 2026 season will feature several new experiences and returning favorites, including a spectacular new joust arena and royal dais for tournament action, the reopening of Scarborough Castle: Hauntings of Yore, the immersive Kings Dungeon attraction exploring Renaissance-era justice and punishment, an expanded Viking Artisan Village with dozens of new artisans joining the marketplace, and a dozen new shows performing across the Festival village.

Following the spring season, the site will again host Scarboroughs Hollow Fall Fantasy Festival, which returns for its second season in 2026 after a widely popular inaugural year. The immersive autumn festival transforms the Crown Meadow area of the Scarborough grounds into a world of magic, mischief and seasonal wonder. Blue Goose Cantina Unveils Limited-Time Augies Cocina Menu Featuring Bold New Flavors

Blue Goose Cantina is turning up the heat beginning Monday, March 9 with a limited-time menu from Augies Cocina, bringing crave-worthy dishes and refreshing sips to the table. Available for a short time only, the new offerings spotlight fresh, crave-worthy flavors, house-made touches and the signature flair guests have loved since 1984.

Leading the lineup are Birria Flautas ($16). Tender birria blended with Jack cheese is rolled in a flour tortilla, fried to a golden crisp and topped with lettuce, cilantro cream, spicy creamosa, pico de gallo and queso fresco. The dish is served with Spanish rice and rich consommé for dipping.

Pollo Adobado ($17) delivers a savory-sweet balance. An adobo-marinated chicken breast is grilled and finished with grilled pineapple pico, then paired with poblano rice, sautéed vegetables and a side of chipotle cream sauce.

Seafood lovers can dive into Fajita Shrimp Tacos ($17). Mesquite-grilled Blue Diamond shrimp are tucked into four mini flour tortillas and layered with cabbage slaw, roasted corn, avocado, chipotle mayo and queso fresco. The tacos are served with poblano rice and black beans for a satisfying finish.

To complement the new dishes, Blue Goose Cantina introduces two alcohol-free refreshers. For 45 seasons, Scarborough Renaissance Festival? has stood as a Texas institution, welcoming generations of families, travelers and tradition-seekers to step back in time to the 16th century each spring. In 2026, the Festival celebrates its milestone 45th season with eight weekends of immersive entertainment, legendary performances and new experiences that underscore its place in the cultural fabric of the state.

Running Saturdays and Sundays from April 4 through May 24 and closing with a special Memorial Day celebration on Monday, May 25, the Festival transforms a 25-acre English village in Waxahachie into a destination that draws visitors throughout Texas and nationwide. Festival hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. each open day.

What began in 1981 as a modest gathering has grown into one of the largest and most respected Renaissance festivals in the United States, consistently recognized as a must-visit spring tradition. The Last Huzzah! Memorial Day Weekend, May 2325
The Festival closes its 45th season with a three-day celebration filled with music and merriment. Memorial Day Monday features a Veterans Parade and Fallen Heroes Tribute, honoring active and retired military members with a presentation of colors and commemorative ceremony.

Signature Attractions, Games & Rides Across the Village

Beyond its stages and street performances, Scarborough Renaissance Festival is known for its interactive attractions, hands-on experiences and human-powered amusements that invite guests to become part of the story rather than simply watch it unfold.

Fantasy and folklore come to life at the Mermaid Lagoon, where guests can meet and interact with live mermaids in a tropical-inspired setting throughout the day. Nearby, the Mythical Monster Museum of Raptus and Krane offers a walk-through encounter with creatures ranging from tiny fairies to towering dragons, blending theatrical storytelling with imagined histories, artifacts and preserved specimens.

Families can connect with animals at the Royal Menagerie, a hands-on experience featuring sheep, goats, pigs and other animals that reflect the important role livestock played in daily Renaissance life. Guests seeking pure whimsy can also visit the Unicorn Experience, set within a fairy-built garden and complete with a keepsake photo souvenir.

Throughout the Festival, visitors are invited to test their aptitude at games of skill, including archery and longbow shooting, crossbow challenges, axe, knife and star throwing, climbing walls, strength tests, mazes and a variety of Renaissance- and pirate-themed games designed for friendly competition.

Guests can also ride back to the past on a collection of human-powered Renaissance rides, including barrel rides, swings, the pirate ship swing and the quintain jousting ride. Calling all ghosts, ghouls, and goblins: Texas Womans University is conjuring up a spooktacular lineup of Halloween festivities this October as part of 31 Days of Denton Halloween with family-friendly events open to the community.

From candy-filled fun to record-breaking thrills, TWU is set to deliver an unforgettable Halloween season. At the heart of it all is the universitys annual Boo at the U, followed by a show-stopping attempt to make history with the Texas Thriller Takeover.

Boo at the U

When: Thursday, Oct. 16, 68 p.m.
Where: Hubbard Hall Lawn / TWU Gardens, 303 Administration Dr, Denton (located on the southwest corner of North Bell Avenue and Administration Drive)

The annual Boo at the U festival has been a staple of community engagement for the university for decades, and provides a safe, family-friendly, trick-or-treating setting for area residents. More than 3,000 people join the annual free event, making it a Denton favorite for families.The event includes:

Trick-or-treating stations with TWU students, faculty and staff
Inflatables, rides, axe throwing, petting zoo and Halloween arts and crafts

Texas Thriller Takeover - One night. One dance. One record to break.

As the sun sets on Boo at the U, the night heats up with TWUs Texas Thriller Takeover an attempt to break the Texas record for the largest Thriller dance. The goal: top Austins 2008 record of 881 zombie dancers.
