Dallas Architecture-Themed Form Follows Fitness 5K Surpasses $2 Million Raised Since its Inception

On Saturday, May 16, Dallas signature architecture-themed race celebrated another milestone year as the Form Follows Fitness 5K, presented by Blackson Brick, gathered more than 60 runners, walkers, architects, designers, civic leaders and community supporters at Community Beer Company for a ceremonial check presentation benefiting The Architecture and Design Foundation. The brewery hosted four social runs leading up to the 2026 race and will host monthly runs on the third Saturday of each month through January 2027.

The 2026 race season generated $221,358.07, the third-highest fundraising total in event history, helping bring the races lifetime charitable impact to more than $2 million raised. The event also celebrated its 15th anniversary year, setting records with 3,973 registrations, $308,000 in sponsorship revenue and 184 industry teams participating. Throughout its 15-year history, 44,588 participants have taken part in the 5K.

The ceremonial presentation recognized the impact of a community event that has evolved far beyond a race. Form Follows Fitness has united the architecture, engineering, construction, planning and fitness communities to raise funds that create opportunities for students, support research, expand public education and connect residents to the beauty and importance of the built environment.

The morning also spotlighted the future of architecture, design and civic innovation. Following the presentation, an air horn sounded as runners and walkers began the first official monthly social run leading into the 2027 race season.

The AD EX Form Follows Fitness 5K really began from a simple moment of inspiration during a Saturday morning AD EX Arts District Walking Tour in 2010, said Patrick Glenn, AIA, LEED AP, ALEP, LE Fellow, Form Follows Fitness 5K founder. As Briar Glenn and I were experiencing the energy of the Dallas Arts District, we started talking about how incredible it would be to create an event that connected health, community and architecture in a more visible and engaging way. What started as a meaningful idea has grown into a Dallas tradition that celebrates architecture, promotes public engagement and supports educational programs and scholarships for future generations of designers and architects.

Glenn said one of the events greatest achievements has been strengthening the connection between the public and the architecture and design community while supporting educational initiatives and scholarships.

Seeing the lasting impact this event has had on both our profession and the broader Dallas community is something I am incredibly proud of, Glenn said. I am excited to see how we can continue to grow that message and impact for the next 15 years.

For Briar Glenn, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, Form Follows Fitness 5K co-founder, the races continued growth reflects the power of community collaboration.

Celebrating the Form Follows Fitness 5Ks 15th anniversary is a tremendous milestone, Glenn said. What began as an idea to bring our industry colleagues, partners and the community together around a shared commitment to wellness and the celebration of Dallas iconic architecture has grown into something far greater than Patrick and I ever imagined.

She said the race has become the Foundations largest single fundraising effort while helping expand programs such as Build Your City!, the Exhibition Series, Architecture and Design Exchange programming and Designing My Future Camps.

Beyond race day, the 5K has become a catalyst for deeper community engagement, meaningful industry partnerships and new opportunities to inspire the next generation through the power of architecture and design, Glenn said.

Norman Alston, FAIA, president-elect of The Architecture and Design Foundation, believes the race perfectly reflects Dallas architectural spirit.

I love that the Form Follows Fitness 5K was born out of walking through our city and looking at the architecture, Alston said. Its testimony to the quality of Dallas architecture that, besides being beautiful, it can inspire people in other important aspects of their lives.

The races unique atmosphere and citywide appeal continue to resonate with participants and organizers alike, according to Eric Lindberg, race director for the Form Follows Fitness 5K.

Every year, the commitment and support from the architecture industry for the race blows me away, Lindberg said. Its the largest industry gathering in North Texas and I pause when I call it a race because its truly an event for all, including architecture, the running and walking community, families, friends and coworkers.

Lindberg added that the course remains one of the events signature experiences as participants travel through the West End, Downtown, the Arts District and Uptown before finishing at Klyde Warren Park.

Marc Blackson, president of Blackson Brick, said supporting the event aligns naturally with the companys mission and values.

Supporting Form Follows Fitness is not only a commitment to giving back, its a strategic alignment of business objectives with meaningful impact, strengthening both the Foundation and the architecture community it serves, Blackson said.

Fortune tellers are reading the cards, mythical monsters are lurking in the village and daring performers are cracking fiery whips as Scarborough Renaissance Festival celebrates the halfway point to Halloween.

April 30 marks the midpoint between now and Oct. 31. Known in parts of Europe as Walpurgis Night, the date has long been associated with folklore, mystery and supernatural legends.

Guests can celebrate Halfway to Halloween during Scarborough Renaissance Festivals 45th season May 2-3, when the 16th-century village comes alive with mystical readings, dungeon adventures and fantastical characters.

Across the country, Halloween enthusiasts increasingly celebrate the halfway point to Oct. 31 with springtime events, costumes and spooky fun. For fans of fantasy, folklore and cosplay, Scarborough Renaissance Festival offers the perfect setting to embrace the spirit of the season months before Halloween arrives.

Set across 25 acres in Waxahachie and celebrating the 1545 visit of King Henry VIII and Queen Katheryn Parr, the Festival recreates a bustling English village filled with live entertainment, artisan shoppes, human-powered rides and thrilling tournaments in the newly enhanced Joust Arena.

Monsters, Mysteries and the Macabre

Texas Womans University Hosts Free BALANCE Docuseries Screenings and Panels

A new docuseries produced by a North Texas researcher and Texas Womans University alumna is helping bring long-overdue visibility to perimenopausean experience that affects every woman, yet historically receives limited attention in research, education and public conversation.

Texas Womans will host a series of free public screenings of BALANCE: A Perimenopause Journey across its campuses in Denton, Dallas and Houston this spring, each followed by a panel discussion and audience Q&A featuring experts in womens health. View the BALANCE trailer.

Monks dont typically come to mind when talking about menopause. But in BALANCE, filmmakers Sadhvi Siddhali Shree and Sadhvi Anubhutimillennial Jain monks based in North Texasset out to better understand their own experiences with perimenopause, thus launching a journey that uncovers a broader story about the origins of menopause misinformation, gaps in womens midlife care, and the need for more open, informed conversations.

Produced by researcher, advocate and TWU alumna Stephanie Collins, the four-part docuseries blends personal storytelling with expert insight, exploring symptoms such as anxiety, insomnia and fatigue, while examining the historical and cultural factors that have shaped how menopause is understood and treated. The series is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV, and has drawn national attention and support from high-profile health care experts and Alyssa Milano, who serves as an executive producer.

A highlight of each TWU event will be a panel discussion and audience Q&A moderated by Collins, which will offer an intriguing opportunity for a post-viewing conversation and extended dialogue about womens health. Joining the conversation will be Dr. Sarah Berg, a nationally-noted obstetrician-gynecologist and Menopause Society Certified Practitioner who specializes in midlife womens health and advances menopause education through speaking, writing and digital learning initiatives, including Selfority, a menopause information platform.

Menopause is something every woman will experience, yet for centuries its been pushed into the shadows, Collins said. Im proud to be part of the growing dialogue bringing this issue into the light and the effort to help women better understand their options. As a TWU alumna, its especially meaningful to bring BALANCE to my own universityan institution committed to the idea that when you educate a woman, you empower the world. That belief is at the heart of this project, which is about giving women the knowledge they need to take control of their menopause journey.

Jaime Porter, TWUs interim vice president for university advancement, said the screenings reflect TWUs commitment to advancing conversations that impact health care, as well as the universitys continued investment in womens health research.

Texas Womans is currently exploring a proposal to expand its Institute for Womens Health, with a focus on advancing research related to perimenopause and midlife health. The planning effort, led by a team that included Collins and supported by a grant from the Texas Womens Foundation, would further position TWU as a leader in addressing critical gaps in womens health.

Were excited that Texas Womans is taking part in this growing conversation, and delighted by the opportunity to celebrate the work of one of our alumnae, Porter said. Almost 90 percent of our students are women and nearly half of our students pursue careers in health care, so this is an issue that directly connects to our mission. These events offer a valuable opportunity for our community to engage with the topic and participate in thoughtful panel discussions with experts in the field.

Families looking for a unique way to celebrate Easter weekend can step back in time when Scarborough Renaissance Festival opens its 45th season April 4 and 5, 2026, with festive holiday traditions, immersive entertainment and a full day of family-friendly adventure.

Easter weekend visitors can enjoy an Easter Egg Stroll for children, a Renaissance-style Easter service on Sunday and the festive return of Scarboroughs beloved characters as the Village gates open for the milestone season.

Set within a 35-acre recreation of an English village celebrating the 1545 visit of King Henry VIII and Queen Katheryn Parr, the festival blends history, pageantry and playful fantasy with strolling performers, artisan shoppes, human-powered rides and dozens of live performances.

Opening Weekend Easter Activities

With Easter falling on Opening Weekend this year, the festival offers families a unique way to celebrate the holiday with a blend of festive traditions and Renaissance charm. Children can participate in the Easter Egg Stroll, a playful twist on a classic holiday activity held Saturday and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at the Maypole. Designed for children ages 12 and under, the lighthearted event invites young guests to join village characters for a whimsical egg-on-the-spoon stroll around the Maypole. On Sunday, April 5, at noon, guests of all ages are invited to attend the Renaissance Easter Service at the Crown Meadow Stage. Calling all ghosts, ghouls, and goblins: Texas Womans University is conjuring up a spooktacular lineup of Halloween festivities this October as part of 31 Days of Denton Halloween with family-friendly events open to the community.

From candy-filled fun to record-breaking thrills, TWU is set to deliver an unforgettable Halloween season. At the heart of it all is the universitys annual Boo at the U, followed by a show-stopping attempt to make history with the Texas Thriller Takeover.

Boo at the U

When: Thursday, Oct. 16, 68 p.m.
Where: Hubbard Hall Lawn / TWU Gardens, 303 Administration Dr, Denton (located on the southwest corner of North Bell Avenue and Administration Drive)

The annual Boo at the U festival has been a staple of community engagement for the university for decades, and provides a safe, family-friendly, trick-or-treating setting for area residents. More than 3,000 people join the annual free event, making it a Denton favorite for families.The event includes:

Trick-or-treating stations with TWU students, faculty and staff
Inflatables, rides, axe throwing, petting zoo and Halloween arts and crafts
Costume contests for kids, teens, students, staff, faculty, alumni and groups
Food trucks and Build-A-Boo Buddy stuffed toys for purchase
Admission is free and open to the public, but attendees are encouraged to donate items to support Minervas Market Food Pantry.

Texas Thriller Takeover - One night. One dance. One record to break.

When: Thursday, Oct. 16, immediately after Boo at the U (approx. 8 p.m.)
Where: Pioneer Circle outside Margo Jones Performance Hall, 1100 Oakland St., Denton

As the sun sets on Boo at the U, the night heats up with TWUs Texas Thriller Takeover an attempt to break the Texas record for the largest Thriller dance. The goal: top Austins 2008 record of 881 zombie dancers.

8:30 p.m. Record-breaking attempt

All ages are welcome, costumes are encouraged, and participants will receive a commemorative wristband. There is no need to registerjust show up!

You will not want to miss this opportunity to walk the campus at dusk for tales of true love lost, unidentified sightings, wandering apparitions and missing persons. Guided by TWU archivist Kimberly Johnson, guests explore legends of Old Mains moaning voices, the Little Chapels hooded lady, and Guinn Halls restless spirit of Dr. John. Panda-monium is about to take over North Texas! Panda Fest, one of the nations fastest-growing Asian food and culture festivals, is making its Dallas debut this fall at Carpenter Park in Downtown Dallas. Award-winning journalist and ABC 20/20 co-anchor Deborah Roberts will headline the "Leading the Lone Star State: Texas Women in Public Service Summit" on Friday, Sept. 19 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Denton Convention Center (3100 Town Center Trail). In an engaging and impactful conversation titled Lessons in Leadership, Roberts will share her experiences as a journalist, advocate, and leader in public service, offering insights into the challenges and rewards of leadership, as well as the importance of womens voices in public affairs.

Hosted by the Jane Nelson Institute for Womens Leadership at Texas Womans University (JNIWL), the Summit is a one-day conference uniting women in the fields of public administration, elected office, and governmentas well as women who aspire to public rolesthrough informative sessions, inspirational speakers, and networking opportunities. The keynote conversation with Roberts will be moderated by Sara Madsen Miller, a JNIWL advisory board member and COO and co-owner of 1820 Productions, an award-winning Dallas-based video production company.

While weve made significant progress, women remain significantly underrepresented in leadership roles, particularly in public office, said Shannon Mantaro, executive director and chief officer of the JNIWL. This event is an opportunity for women to hear from other women who have taken a seat at the table, shaped policy, and broken access barriers to decision-making roles.

TWUs Center for Women Entrepreneurs Marks 10 Years of Fueling Women-Owned Businesses

Since 2015, the Center for Women Entrepreneurs (CWE) at the Jane Nelson Institute for Womens Leadership at Texas Womans University has been helping transform visions into ventures, providing funding, business advisement, and training for more than 1,900 women-owned businesses across Texas to date.

To celebrate its milestone anniversary, CWE will host an anniversary event on July 8 and will feature a vendor showcase of 40 grant recipients.

Over the last decade, CWE has awarded more than $2.37 million in grant funding to 467 women entrepreneurs across Texas, supporting efforts to launch, grow, and scale businesses in urban centers and rural communities. Among the rich diversity of ventures supported by CWE are a number of intriguing enterprisessuch as a pet gift shop, doula service, custom prosthetics designer, and even a mortuary that collectively showcase the innovation and creativity of women-owned businesses across Texas.

In addition to funding, CWE has conducted more than 300 training sessions to equip women business owners with the skills, strategies, and resources needed to sustain a successful enterprise. The Center has also received a number of accolades and awards, including the Educate Award (2022) from the Denton Chamber of Commerce, as well as University of the Year (2025), Corporate Supporter of the Year (2024) and BIPOC Corporate Champion awards (2024) from the DEC Network.

Overview of CWE Programs

AccelerateHER
This immersive program fast-tracks early-stage, women-owned startups into scalable businesses. Six entrepreneurs are selected to participate in each cohort, gaining access to expert-led education and resources through CWE and its statewide partners.

To date, the rotating program has served women-owned businesses in Denton, Dallas, Houston, Abilene, Mission, Austin, and Corpus Christi.

Veteran Woman Grant
Designed to boost economic development, this grant supports innovative projects by veteran woman-owned small businesses across Texas.

Texas Rural Woman Grant
This grant empowers rural women entrepreneurs to pursue new ideas and expand business opportunities in underserved communities.

StartHER Grant
Aimed at startups, the StartHER Grant helps women-owned businesses launch innovative new initiatives and build early-stage momentum.

From Dallas to Houston, from Abilene to Longview, the stories behind CWE grant recipients across Texas are as vibrant and varied as Texas itself. A few examples of recently awarded CWE grants include: Embody Health (Keller), a womens health clinic offering holistic, compassionate care; Clean Eatz (College Station), a franchise promoting wellness through balanced meals and fitness education; ATX Supper Club (Austin), a dining adventure community creating inclusive connections through beautiful meals; and Rose Soiree (Corpus Christi), a creative floral studio specializing in events and workshops.

Grants awarded prior to 2025 have supported a host of innovative businesses across the state, such as Centro de Consejeria Familiar (Arlington), providing culturally sensitive counseling to Latino families; Copano Oyster Company (Austin), promoting sustainable coastal practices; and Game Theory TX (Fort Worth), a scratch kitchen and board game bar focused on community. Looking for authentic dishes made from Hatch chile peppers grown in New Mexico? Blue Goose Cantina is serving up fan favorite dishes and all-new items during its 23rd Annual Hatch Chile Fest once the harvest begins. Not for the faint of heart, the excitement for the smoky, green peppers is for a limited time only. Hatch chile season and the Gooses special menu typically run from the beginning of August into September, depending on the weather. Once the spicy Hatch chile harvest has ended, Blue Goose Cantina ends its menu until next year.

Texas Womans University Celebrates Expansion of the Mike A. Myers Stroke Center

On Wednesday, May 14, Texas Womans University Dallas hosted a dedication ceremony celebrating the expansion and new name of its renowned Stroke Centernow officially the Mike A. Myers Stroke Center, in recognition of a $2 million gift from Dallas businessman and philanthropist Mike A. Myers.

Located at the TWU T. Boone Pickens Institute of Health Sciences Dallas Center, the Mike A. Myers Stroke Center provides life-changing, no-cost outpatient care for individuals recovering from strokes, brain injuries, and other neurological conditions, while also serving as a clinical training ground for future healthcare professionals. The recent expansion includes a new swallowing clinic, bilingual staffing to improve access for Spanish-speaking patients, and technology upgrades to enhance clinical research and student instruction.

The evening featured remarks from TWU leaders, including Stroke Center Director Jyutika Mehta, Ph.D., who spoke about the impact of the centers mission. At the Stroke Center, were changing brains and changing lives, Mehta said. Our program is about small victories, large victories, and the setbacks that become comebacks.

The ceremony also highlighted patient and caregiver testimonials. Among them were a stroke survivor who regained his speech, a young man who recovered his ability to drive following a traumatic brain injury, and a former student who shared how the centers interdisciplinary care model benefits both patients and future healthcare professionals.

Mr. Myers closed the program by reflecting on the centers impact. I am thrilled to be able to support this amazing center which provides critical assistance to families in our Dallas community who are dealing with stroke and brain injury-related challenges who otherwise might not be able to afford proper treatment, Myers said. It is my hope and desire that through these expanded services, even more lives will be transformed and positively impacted by this important and worthy program.

Monica Christopher, president of the TWU Dallas campus, added, We are grateful for this important gift from Mr. Myers, who sees the benefit of a center focused on helping patients get intensive rehabilitation support, while also training our students to work as an interdisciplinary team in addressing a patients health needs.

The celebration also served as an important reminder that May is Stroke Awareness Month.
