If you’re looking for Victoria Huang, chances are she’s at a quiet spot on campus at the University of Pennsylvania, nose deep in a book. Or she might be tutoring other students on new computer systems. Or she might be developing an app with her friends.

Huang, a freshman majoring in computer science with a minor in math, excelled during her time at Dallas International School (DIS), graduating at the top of her class in 2015 and staying busy with all kinds of other activities. Not much has changed at Penn.

“I compete at hackathons,” Huang said. “I was hired by UPenn Tutoring Center and worked as a CIS tutor last semester. I am currently working as an app developer for a couple of startups, and I’m also learning new programming languages. I was hired by the UPenn CIS department last semester and will be working as a TA starting next semester.”

Huang said that DIS prepared her well for the intense workload that she would experience in college.

“At Penn, I had midterms almost every week starting about four weeks into the semester,” Huang said. “When you throw in all the homework we also had to do, my duties as a tutor, as well as the hackathons, there isn’t much time for studying. At DIS, we would take four-hour-long CNED tests every Wednesday afternoon, which made me accustomed to working at this pace.”

The workload may be comparable, but according to Huang, the biggest difference between DIS and Penn is the atmosphere.

“Penn is very pre-professional and competitive,” Huang said. “In class, people will even put chairs in front of the first row to create the zeroth row. Everyone is just so motivated and hard-working that this mentality becomes highly infectious.”

Huang had just one piece of advice for current DIS students.

“Take the time to try new activities, to discover what they actually like and to learn for the sake of learning,” Huang said. “They should also take the time to relax and have time while they still can.”

Dallas International School (DIS) instills the importance of social responsibility in

students at a very young age. On March 25, students from first through fourth grade

participated in an on-campus race to raise funds for Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for

Kids, one of the country’s top pediatric centers in treating orthopedic conditions.

The annual Rite Race kicked off in 2004, and sponsors pledged a dollar amount

for each lap completed, or even offered a lump sum for the entire race. This year, Lower

School students raised $6,000, bringing the total amount donated to the hospital in the

last 12 years to $104,300.

Severine Le Duff, a physical education teacher at DIS, coordinated this year’s

event. In preparing her students for the race, she made sure to express the value of

good will.

“I wanted my students to understand that when running for a cause… one should

give it their all and then some,” Le Duff said.

The enthusiasm for philanthropic efforts was certainly evident among the

students.

“I was excited to do as many laps as I could so that I could donate the money,”

said Olivia Knutson, a second grade student who completed seven full laps around the

Lower School campus.

While the Rite Race serves as a fundraiser, Le Duff wanted her students to

“not only raise money, but to cherish the thrill of running, something the children at

Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Kids are not able to experience.”

When DIS students visited the hospital on April 27,

they viewed an introductory video of how customized prosthetic limbs are produced.

Knutson was particularly intrigued with how hospital staff members were able to

accommodate the requests of one female patient.

“They put a pretend foot on her so that she can wear high heels!” she marveled.

Students were even able to touch old prosthetics on this field trip, allowing them

to connect with the cause they were supporting in a very hands-on way.

Stephanie Brigger, vice president for development at the hospital, praised the

selflessness of the DIS students.

“We’re exceptionally honored that your students and staff have elected to support

us for the past 12 years through the school’s annual Rite Race,” Brigger wrote. “We love

being a part of the post-event celebratory field trip here at the hospital and showing your

young philanthropists the impact of their community service efforts. At TSRHC, we’re

giving children back childhood, and the children of the Dallas International School have

truly helped make that possible!"

DIS students are looking forward to participating in next year’s Rite Race and

making a difference in the lives of their peers right here in the community.

CM2 (5th Grade) students studied earthquakes, wind and sustainable development for several weeks, learning as much as they could about these various topics. On Tuesday 3 May, they presented their research during the CM2 Science Fair on the Upper School Campus. The projects were judged by Mr. Chanemougassoundiram and his 11th grade students as well as by Mrs. Tassa and her IB students. The results were close as all the CM2 students put together excellent presentations. This year’s winners are:

1st Place: Annabelle Yu, Courtney Devries, Emer McGrath-Imbert

2nd Place: Alexander Lily, Claire Wong

3rd Place: Andrew Petruzzeli, Hayden Ouazzani

Congratulations to all!

Muralist Adrián Torres, artist behind the “Deep Ellumphants” roaming Dallas’ cultural epicenter, has graced DIS Upper School walls with the first piece of a two-part project for his "Riding Colors" series. Under this initiative, Torres travels around the globe painting murals pro bono in underdeveloped countries to inspire joy in third-world communities. DIS Upper School students joined Torres in painting the finishing touches for the school mural. From the Toucan found in the South American rainforests to India’s Bengal tiger, the images featured in the mural are true representations of global awareness; elements Torres hopes will remind students that there are many other walks of life.

During the DIS Spring Break, Upper School students embarked on a trek to build a school in rural Haiti. It is the 4th school DIS students have helped to fundraise and construct in cooperation with builOn, a movement committed to "breaking the cycle poverty, illiteracy and low-expectations through service". There, Torres adorned school walls with vibrant murals. Torres has witnessed the power of color and art’s capacity to radiate positive energy within impoverished communities. And, now, he finally feels like he’s found his calling: “I always wanted to help people; I just didn't know what I would do. Painting is what I love. If I can help people through my painting, then why not?”

On 16 February, Upper School Student Nadine Bandek represented Dallas International School (DIS) at the Annual Private School County Bee held at the Dallas County Schools Building. She progressed through the ranks of class, grade and then school bee before being selected to compete for a chance to participate in the National Scripps Spelling Bee. Advanced language skills surely played a role in analyzing words with international origins. A special thanks to the classmates who came to support Nadine and to Patty DeVilliers, DIS English Teacher, who facilitated all of the school spelling bees.

The Dallas International School (DIS) Tennis Team participated in the IAA Tennis Tournament on 2 March 2016 at the University of Texas-Dallas and competed alongside the Fairhill School, Oakhill Academy, Cambridge School, Winston School and Parish Episcopal School respectively. This was the first time in the school’s history that a middle school tennis team had participated in a Tennis Tournament, with 14 students taking a stand.

Congratulations to the Flodin sisters who battled it out Venus and Serena style in the Girls’ Singles Championship only to have older sister Isabella prevail against her younger exuberant sibling! Dallas International School also had two Boys’ Singles team members Russell Ramsay (who made his tournament début) and Harper Moxcey make the semi-finals and rally through a challenging game. The DIS Athletic Coaches are very proud of how their athletes represented the school with great dignity and sportsmanship!

On 31 January, 37 Upper School students of Dallas International School performed in the school’s 15th annual Music Concert at the Jonsson Performance Hall at the University of Texas at Dallas. This yearly event gives the students the chance to explore and perhaps, even, discover an artistic side of themselves that they never knew they had. 5th through 12th graders performed a wide variety of songs and musical styles from Ed Sheeran and Adele to Bach and Mendelssohn. They performed as soloists, duets, a trio and as a choir. Some sang a capella, while others accompanied themselves on guitar, piano and even with cups as percussion. Three of our students shared the stage with guitarists Howard E. Scott from the 70s funk band War, DIS music teacher Michael Gomez and former DIS student Lucas Gachelin. The hours the students spent preparing and rehearsing outside of class paid off beautifully the night of the show!
