Good Shepherd’s 7th grade students recently returned from Northwest Arkansas as a part of the the school’s Classroom of the Earth Program, where they camped along the beautiful Buffalo National River. Each year Good Shepherd students travel to different parts of the southwest to learn about the wilderness and the importance of “Leave No Trace.” On this year’s adventure, the students continued to expand their knowledge of backpacking, changes in weather, cooking, cleaning, and traveling as a group; sharpening the skills they will need in August for their final 10-day backpacking trip to Colorado!

Summer is fast approaching, and it is time to address the age-old question, how do you prevent the summer slump, or summer learning loss over the break? According to the Northwest Evaluation Association, students in the 3rd through 8th grade lose the greatest proportion of their school-year gains during the summer months. "By the summer after seventh grade, students lose, on average, 36 percent of their school-year gains in reading and a whopping 50 percent of their school-year gains in math."

The good news? Children who engage in summer learning not only maintain, but often strengthen their knowledge. Children who build strong relationships with mentors are more likely to be successful, as they have someone to hold them accountable during the summer months. Those who are exposed to research-based literacy instruction, specifically programming using instructional strategies that utilize best practices have the largest impact of success.

What does that mean for parents? Parents can be advocates for their children during the summer months by establishing a routine that requires children to engage in reading and writing daily. Provide children with a variety of daily activities and experiences that they can write about in their journals. Participate in reading programs through the Good Shepherd library to keep reading a priority over the summer months. Provide real-world experiences for children that utilize money and have them plan, budget, and pay for activities throughout the summer. Make sure to include plenty of time for unstructured play and opportunities for children to be creative with manipulatives.

Be prepared! Have a variety of activities prepared to combat the popular phrase, "I'm bored!" Summer is a time to enjoy your children and make memories! Beyond addressing the summer slump, children need a variety of activities to keep their brains stimulated during the summer. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention say that children need at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day and, during these hot summer months, it can be tempting to stay inside. Make sure to plan time outdoors in the early morning or late evening to avoid the Texas heat. Find pools, indoor parks, and recreation areas where children can run and play freely. Focus on activities that work on fine motor skills, such as creative building, art and instrument practice, sewing, or hand-writing.
