Dennis Bowsher

Have you ever heard of a modern pentathlon? It is a five-part athletic competition where each participant must compete in fencing, pistol shooting, horse show jumping, freestyle swimming (200 meters) and cross-country running (3 kilometers).

Well, a W.T. White High School graduate, Dennis Bowsher, will be participating in the modern pentathlon competition for Team USA at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

While in high school, Bowsher participated in swimming all four years, and reportedly found out about the modern pentathlon from a flier at a swim meet.

"Bowsher is the son of John and Nancy Bowsher. He has two brothers, Taylor and Tracey, and one sister, Devon," according to the NBC Olympics website.

The men's Olympic competition is scheduled to happen on Aug. 11. Thirty six participants, including Bowsher, will compete in the pentathlon. All of the competition's events will happen in a single day, in this order: fencing, swimming, horse jumping and then a combined running and shooting stage.
