The Winston School hosted its annual Heroes and Hotcakes event on Thursday, October 19 with a very special visit from the Dallas Zoo Animal Adventures Outreach team. One day a year students and their hero are the guests of honor for a special breakfast celebration at Winston to celebrate the good things our heroes do for us every day, often without the recognition they deserve. Guests were treated to a delicious breakfast of hotcakes, sausage and fresh fruit. The Dallas Zoo staff did a fabulous job of keeping the audience entertained while showcasing some of our favorite animals. There was an opossum, baby alligator, anteater, owl, snake, three banded armadillo and everyone's favorite a penguin. This 45-minute interactive program was both educational and a fun experience for all who attended.

There is a SUPERHERO in ALL of us! What's YOUR Super Power?

With the recent devastation to our neighbors in the south, there is an overwhelming desire to want to help without the knowledge of where to begin. Often, helping begins in our own backyard. On yesterday, the sixth grade class visited Cornerstone Community Kitchen in South Dallas to serve some of the less fortunate in our city.  "When we serve, we go with the attitude to do whatever job we are given with joy", said sixth grade teacher Kathy Cox. The students and their teachers helped prepare plastic utensils for the neighbors to use as they were served meals. They also folded toilet paper placing them into baggies for their personal use. As lunchtime approached, they were able to serve in many capacities from greeting neighbors, handing out desserts and water, assisting with coffee and storing personal items while the men and women ate. This experience is already making an impact. After the students had finished for the day and were eating lunch in a neighboring park, one student commented, "We are so blessed." The resounding response, yes, yes we are!

Teachers, administrators, faculty staff at The Winston School gave a red carpet welcome to its students as they arrived for their first day of school today.

Continuing with the back-to-school tradition, administrators and teachers lined the red carpet to greet students before the bell rang to begin the new school year.  The red carpet roll out at Winston has been a tradition for the last 6 years. It is all about setting the tone for the rest of the school year.  "We care. You matter as an individual student and we are going to do everything we can to make sure the students have a positive, successful and of course, fun school year, said Rebbie Evans, Head of School."

Winston families gathered on Friday, August 18 for the annual Back-to-School Family Fair. Held on the Friday afternoon before the first day of school on Monday, August 21. This fun, family event is a great opportunity for new and returning families to meet their teachers, fellowship and reunite with friends. This annual event is a favorite tradition for the staff and Winston families.

A picnic style lunch with all the trimmings, chocolate chip cookies, sweet tea and lemonade were provided by Chef Vinny and his staff and was a hit for everyone! This event is the perfect way to welcome our families and start off a new school year. We are so excited to welcome everyone on Monday and look forward to an exciting new school year!

What is service learning, and why does it matter?  In addition to excelling in the classroom, Winston students make a commitment to serving others while making a difference in the community in which they live.  It is the belief of The Winston School that the students’ community involvement contributes significantly to what they learn and enhances their social awareness and citizen contributions for the greater good.

On yesterday, our 5th and 6th grade students spent the afternoon serving and making a difference in the community at Cornerstone Crossroads Academy. Cornerstone Crossroads Academy was founded by Jim and Jane Beckett of Dallas, who saw a need for kids who were lost in "the system" after they volunteered with Hope Literacy in the city's juvenile justice system.  The students of Cornerstone are offered a second chance to get their education and are directed toward careers that break them from some of the events of their life, either by their own choice or simply circumstances, and begin them down positive paths.  The students helped out all around the Cornerstone campus and served the community in whatever way they were asked.

The students were divided into groups that set up food and served the homeless at Cornerstone Kitchen.  Another group folded, sorted and hung clothes in the Clothes Closet, while another group weeded the areas around the school and the building where the students gather to eat lunch and cleaned and organized the building where students from DISD come for aftercare and are fed before they head home that evening.  Students and staff completed 4 hours of service before returning to campus feeling inspired and ready to share their volunteer experience. Everyone was really glad to serve their community and loved their volunteer experience! "Our desire for students at The Winston School is to serve the community and to plant the seeds for having servant hearts as they grow and change their own worlds," explained teacher Kathy Cox.

A big thank you to our students for their dedication, their achievements, and their spirit of community!

The Winston School hosted its annual Grandparents' and Grand-Friends Day on February 17, a popular event among students, staff, and families.  The day was filled with musical performances, classroom visits, games, and of course, lots of fun and smiles.  Over 250 guests were in attendance this year.

Winston Eagle Ambassadors greeted grandparents and special guests upon arrival.  The afternoon also featured performances by the Upper School Ensemble including two musical selections, "Caprice"  and "Country Gardens"  by Larry Clark as guests enjoyed a special Soda Shop themed lunch of hamburgers, french fries, and our chefs famous apple cobbler.  Junior Jason Bard performed a solo of "Chances Are" by Johnny Mathis and did an outstanding job.  His melodic voice was a treat for everyone.  Jason has been very successful at Winston and we know his academics and musical talent will take him to new heights of success.

Grandparents and Grand-Friends also had the opportunity to visit classrooms with their grandchildren. They met teachers and participated in activities specifically for the day's theme.  The activities included trivia questions from the 1950's about history, film and music, shaving cream art, grandparent interviews of their favorite childhood memories and much more.  It was a fun-filled day for all!
