White Rock Rowing Writes History for Central Region at USRowing’s Youth Nationals

Youth program places 36 of 59 athletes in top 10 fastest boats in the nation, becomes first junior crew in the Central Rowing Region to place two Men’s 8+ boats in Grand Finals

DALLAS, TX – White Rock Rowing, the only Dallas rowing club to hold multiple national youth championship trophies (2014, 2021), made history once more at the 2023 USRowing National Youth Championships at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Florida. It is the first crew in the entire Central Region of rowing to ever place multiple Men’s 8 boats in the grand finals, which are widely considered the fastest and most competitive of all race events. The Men’s U16 8+ placed sixth in the nation and the Men’s U17 8+ placed seventh.

After qualifying a record number of 59 athletes for Nationals, 36 of them placed in Top 10 boats for the nation, including the Men’s U16 8+, Men’s U17 8+, Women’s U16 8+ and Women’s U17 8+.

White Rock Rowing’s historical performance in the 8-person boat category marked a first for the Central Region of rowing, which consists of crews from Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. It’s also a record for the city of Dallas, which is increasingly becoming a competitor to crews from the rowing-centric northeast and northwest.

“All season long our athletes have had unwavering dedication to represent Dallas on a national level. We couldn’t be prouder of their hard work and discipline. The coaches have set an excellent example of what leadership looks like on and off the water. So let it be known – Dallas is here to compete for the biggest races in rowing, and White Rock Rowing athletes will be some of the fiercest competitors on the water,” said Sue Ellen Chambers, president of White Rock Boathouse, Inc. – the nonprofit that manages White Rock Rowing.

Coach Caitlynn Crouch, White Rock Rowing

After leading Sarasota youth to national championship title seven years in a row, Caitlynn Crouch joins White Rock Rowing staff as new assistant coach for men’s youth varsity

DALLAS, TX (April 5, 2023) – Local rowing club White Rock Rowing – the only Dallas rowing crew to hold multiple national youth championship trophies (2014, 2021) – has bolstered its coaching staff with the addition of Caitlynn Crouch as the new assistant coach of the men’s youth varsity.

With more than 15 years’ experience in the sport, Crouch signed on with White Rock Rowing following a nine-year run with the Sarasota Crew men’s youth varsity in Florida. There, she played a crucial role in leading the men’s 8+ boat to the winner’s podium at the youth national championships for the longest streak in the club’s history – seven years in a row. During that time, she also worked as regatta director for the Sarasota Crew, coordinating with over 30 teams and 500 athletes for races in the Florida west districts.

In her collegiate career, Crouch was a coxswain for the San Diego University women’s varsity crew for four years. After graduating she pursued coaching and became assistant coach for the University of California San Diego, supporting training, development and recruitment efforts. In 2017, Crouch joined the USRowing men’s junior national team managing logistical and financial operations.

“White Rock Rowing is thrilled to welcome Coach Crouch to our coaching staff with her impressive career and her passion for making rowing accessible to youth. We are proud to continue providing junior athletes in Dallas with the best leadership that can mentor them on and off the water,” said Sue Ellen Chambers, president and board chair of White Rock Boathouse, Inc. – the nonprofit that operates White Rock Rowing.

White Rock Rowing’s Womens U16 8+ boat becomes first 8 boat ever from Dallas to make A Finals at nationals, two other boats place top ten

DALLAS White Rock Rowing, the only Dallas rowing club to hold a national youth championship trophy (2014, 2021), returned to White Rock Lake this week after a trip to Sarasota, Florida, to compete in USRowing 2022’s National Youth Championships. There, the women’s U16 8+ boat, the largest team boat category, made history for Dallas by becoming the first ever 8-person boat to make A Finals at youth nationals.

In May, White Rock Rowing scooped up a number of gold, silver and bronze medals at Regionals, qualifying for a record number of 11 events at Nationals. Of the 1,300 competing high school teams and clubs in the U.S., only 200 qualified for Nationals. On Tuesday, June 7, the local rowing club set out with 50 youth athletes from across the metroplex to head to Sarasota.

Racing began on Thursday, June 9 and ended with A Finals on Sunday, June 12. In those four days, White Rock Rowing launched seven competitive boats, placing top ten nationwide in three key events.

“I am so proud of the work our White Rock Rowing coaches and athletes have put in all season long to make it to Nationals, and it clearly shows in our placements and the fact that we just became the first ever Dallas club to put an 8-person boat in A Finals at Nationals,” said Sue Ellen Chambers, president and board chair of White Rock Rowing. “That’s a huge deal in and of itself, but what’s even more impressive is that we did it with such a young group – they have years ahead of them to improve and accomplish more under our coaches’ leadership. We finished Nationals this year with great hope for the future of White Rock Rowing – we’re going to continue to lead Dallas in becoming a renowned rowing city! We’ve got all the right ingredients to make that happen!”

“It is an amazing feeling to come home knowing that we have made Dallas history and knowing how hard we worked for it,” said Women’s U16 8+ rower, Charlotte Bohannon. “I am so incredibly proud of my team and how we came together and pushed ourselves just within a few months! My coach was so amazing at keeping us focused and training us not just physically but mentally and it really shows. I am so happy that I got to have Coach Josh as my coach, we had many fun times as a team and I couldn’t have asked for a better first year! I hope that this gives other girls confidence and brings more athletes to White Rock Rowing as well as going out there and showing people what we are made of.”
