2019 CCF Group Shot Models 2019 featured models for the 31st Annual Children’s Cancer Fund Gala pictured with Gala Chair Kimberly Schlegel Whitman, Honorary Co-Chairs Troy Aikman and Roger Staubach, and Children’s Cancer Fund Executive Director Jennifer Arthur

Chair Kimberly Schlegel Whitman Joins Honorary Chairs Roger Staubach & Troy Aikman and cancer patients, survivors, and celebrities for a fashion show, dinner, and dancing to raise funds for pediatric oncology research and treatment

Ronnie Colwick, 5; Sha’Khia Johnson, 8; and Tabitha Shaw, 8, are featured models in the Children’s Cancer Fund Gala “An Evening in the Garden,” where hope blooms in an enchanted garden filled with miraculous stories of survival, on Friday, April 26, 2019, at the Hilton Anatole Dallas.  The event begins with a silent auction and VIP reception at 6 p.m. followed by the dinner and program at 7 p.m. Chair Kimberly Schlegel Whitman joins longtime Honorary Co-Chairs Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman to kick off the evening.  The event is expected to raise more than $1 million to support pediatric cancer research and treatment programs at Children's Health and UT Southwestern.  Staubach, who has been involved all 31 years, and Aikman, now in his 22nd year, join other celebrities and sponsors as runway escorts for 25 featured pediatric cancer patients, ages 4-16, who model fashions by Dillard’s for the annual fashion show, produced by RSC Show Productions. Upon arrival, guests will be transported into a lush garden setting, complete with a floral swing and a gift card tree – all designed and created by GRO Events and Design. The evening will conclude with dancing and entertainment, provided by DJ Souljah and a violin accompanist.

In July of 2017, Ronnie Colwick, 5, was diagnosed with stage 3 alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma (ARMS), which is a sub-type of the rhabdomyosarcoma soft tissue cancer family related to skeletal muscle cells. He endured 43 weeks of chemotherapy, six weeks (28 treatments) of proton radiation and found out he was in remission on May 30, 2018. He is no longer in treatment but visits his doctor every three months.

Colwick’s mantra throughout his journey has been, “Fear not, neither be dismayed. For I will be with you wherever you go.” This fits him well as he would like to be a preacher when he grows up. He enjoys fishing, riding his bike, playing with his cousins and going to the park. His hero is the Incredible Hulk because he is strong. He would love to go to Disney World one day so he can see the dinosaurs.

“I’m excited to be a fashion show model so I can meet Batman and walk on the stage with him,” said Colwick.

In May of 2018, Sha’Khia Johnson was diagnosed with a Wilms’ Tumor, the most common type of kidney cancer in children. She had surgery to remove the mass and her left kidney. She is currently in treatment and visits her doctor weekly. A third grader at Beasley Elementary, she has two brothers and loves swimming, dancing, singing and board games. She enjoys being home with her family and is happiest when her family makes jokes. She hopes to become a gymnast when she grows up and would love to travel to Disney World.

“Being in a fashion show is something I don’t normally do, and I’m excited that I get to feel pretty, pose, and meet new people,” said Johnson.

Tabitha Shaw was diagnosed with osteosarcoma of the right jaw in November of 2012 after her grandfather, her hero, noticed a lump. Osteosarcoma is a rare but highly malignant bone tumor, and she was in the hospital for a year and half for treatment. Today she is no longer in treatment but continues to visit her doctor on a regular basis. The youngest in her family, Shaw is a third grader at Bonnie Gentry Elementary. She has three brothers and two sisters, and she loves drill team and all Taylor Swift songs. One day she hopes to go on a Disney cruise because she thinks it would be fun to travel on a big ship.

“I love dressing up and can’t wait to model in the fashion show,” said Shaw.

The gala, which is the organization’s largest annual fundraiser for pediatric cancer, is sponsored by CBS 11 and features Karen Borta as mistress of ceremonies. Since 1982 Children’s Cancer Fund has donated over $10 million to the childhood cancer cause.

“The Children’s Cancer Fund Gala brings together kids who have been through such hard times, from chemo to radiation,” said Jennifer Arthur, executive director, Children’s Cancer Fund.  “No matter where they are in treatment – day one or year 12 – we are celebrating their lives and letting them know they are not alone in this fight. The commitments of our supporters on this special night give us hope of a day when childhood cancer will no longer exist.”

Gala Chair Kimberly Schlegel Whitman has served as a lifestyle contributor to the TODAY Show on NBC and editor-at-large of Southern Living Magazine since 2011. She is the author of eight books on entertaining, including her latest, Parties Around a Punch Bowl. Whitman is also a mother of two children and an active member of the Dallas community.  Presently, she is the chair of the NorthPark Ambassador Program, where she is working to raise awareness for Dwell with Dignity. Along with her husband, Justin, she co-chaired the North Texas Food Bank’s Food 4 Kids program for two years and served on the board. She is a member of The Sweetheart Ball, the New Friends New Life Advisory Board, and the MTV RE:DEFINE Advisory Committee, of which she is a past chair. This spring Whitman is honorary chair of the DWD Thrift Studio Event. Additionally, she is a 2018 and 2019 Crystal Charity Ball Ten Best Dressed Honoree, a recipient of the American Heart Association Volunteer of the Year Award and a co-recipient of the Virginia Chandler Dykes Leadership Award, sharing the honor with her mother, Myrna Schlegel.

“After meeting these children at the hospital, I was amazed to see not only their strength and resilience, but also such joy on each of their faces – in the midst of their incredibly hard battles,” said Kimberly Schlegel Whitman, Gala chair. “No child or family deserves what comes with a cancer diagnosis. Children’s Cancer Fund is making an impact, and I’m thrilled to help through the Gala. I consider each of these special children my new friends in life, and I’m looking forward to supporting them in their fight.”

Children’s Cancer Fund was founded 36 years ago by a coalition of parents whose children were receiving cancer therapy at Children’s Medical Center. The organizers have since been joined by community leaders, dedicated volunteers, and health professionals in their fundraising efforts. CCF is one of the nation’s leading fundraising groups in supporting local research toward treatment and prevention of childhood cancers. Among the programs supported by Children’s Cancer Fund are the Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Fellowship Program at Children's Health and the Children's Cancer Fund Comprehensive Center for Research in Pediatric Oncology and Hematology at UT Southwestern Medical Center, which is gaining a national reputation for its work in eradicating childhood cancer. In 2002, Children’s Cancer Fund initiated funding for a full-time Child Life Specialist at the Pauline Allen Gill Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders in Children’s Medical Center to assist the outpatient team. The primary goal of the Child Life Specialist is to make each of the 80-90 daily outpatients’ visits a more positive experience. This position is funded annually by CCF, helping to ease the emotional strain of ongoing treatments, some lasting several years.

“The children have looked forward to this night all year,” added Arthur. “They spend the day getting runway ready and reuniting with their friends backstage, and when the spotlight comes on, you will see some of the happiest smiles. The grand finale, which features CCF models from the past 30 years, is one of the most incredible moments of the evening. These stories of survival are a testimony to the impact CCF is making in our community.”

Jacob Velez, 7 Velez is a featured model in Children's Cancer Fund Gala on April 26

Chair Kimberly Schlegel Whitman Joins Honorary Chairs Roger Staubach & Troy Aikman and cancer patients, survivors, and celebrities for a fashion show, dinner, and dancing to raise funds for pediatric oncology research and treatment

Jacob Velez, 7, of McKinney, is a featured model in the Children’s Cancer Fund Gala “An Evening in the Garden,” where hope blooms in an enchanted garden filled with miraculous stories of survival, on Friday, April 26, 2019, at the Hilton Anatole Dallas. In September of 2017, Velez was diagnosed with Pre-B acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), a type of cancer of the blood and bone marrow in which too many B-cell lymphoblasts are found. ALL is one of the most common types of childhood cancers. Velez is currently in treatment with regular visits to his doctors.

“Jacob is the most incredible little boy you will ever meet,” said Gretchen Velez, his mother. “He is one of God’s greatest miracles and warriors and our biggest blessing and test of faith.  He has proven time and time again that he is here to win and to live. He is going to change the world, and I cannot wait to see what God is going to do in his life – in our lives.”

A first grader at Glen Oaks Elementary, Velez enjoys playing video games, listening to music, climbing, and pretending to be a boss character. When he grows up, he wants to be a dinosaur. He’s happiest when he’s out of the hospital and at home with his parents and younger sister. His Daddy is his hero because he’s his best friend. He would like to visit Japan some day because he likes the city lights, gaming, and the buildings.

“I am excited about being in the fashion show because I want to show everyone that although I have  many challenges, I am awesome,” said Velez.

Max Estrada, 10, of Frisco Estrada will walk the runway as a featured model in the 31st Annual Children's Cancer Fund Gala on April 26

Chair Kimberly Schlegel Whitman Joins Honorary Chairs Roger Staubach & Troy Aikman and cancer patients, survivors, and celebrities for a fashion show, dinner, and dancing to raise funds for pediatric oncology research and treatment

Max Estrada, 10, of Frisco, is a featured model in the Children’s Cancer Fund Gala “An Evening in the Garden,” where hope blooms in an enchanted garden filled with miraculous stories of survival, on Friday, April 26, 2019, at the Hilton Anatole Dallas.

In November of 2013, on his fifth birthday, Max Estrada was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), a type of cancer of the blood and bone marrow. ALL is one of the most common types of childhood cancers.

His treatment lasted 3 ½ years, and he is now in remission.

“Due to side effects from his chemotherapy, Max had to stay in the hospital for almost a month,” said Joana Ahumada, his mother. “When he was finally released from the hospital, we spent all of our time at home because of his compromised immune system.  He missed his first year of school, birthday parties, and a piece of his childhood. Our main priority was fighting and beating cancer. Max is a fighter, and his strength allowed him to ‘beat his dragon,’ – what he calls his cancer.  He never lost hope and never once complained. His little sister continues to be a great supporter!”

Max attends Christie Elementary in Frisco. He enjoys reading, riding his bike, playing Xbox, and hanging out with his family.  He also enjoys doing science experiments and would like to be a meteorologist when he grows up. His favorite celebrities are Steve Carrell, Will Ferrell, and Ed Helms.  He would like to travel to New York because he wants to visit the Statue of Liberty and the 9/11 memorial.

“I’m excited to walk the runway during the fashion show and show everyone that I am a survivor,” said Max Estrada.

These stories of survival are a testimony to the impact CCF is making in our community.

Chair Kimberly Schlegel Whitman Joins Honorary Chairs Roger Staubach & Troy Aikman and cancer patients, survivors, and celebrities for a fashion show, dinner, and dancing to raise funds for pediatric oncology research and treatment

Katherine Thomson, 14, of Burleson, is a featured model in theChildren’s Cancer Fund Gala “An Evening in the Garden,” where hope blooms in an enchanted garden filled with miraculous stories of survival, on Friday, April 26, 2019, at the Hilton Anatole Dallas.

In January of 2015, Thomson was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), a type of cancer of the blood and bone marrow. ALL is one of the most common types of childhood cancers. Thomson relapsed in October of 2017. She is not currently in treatment but visits her doctor monthly.

Thomson is in the ninth grade at Joshua High School. She enjoys swimming, dancing, and relaxing. She knows that God and positivity are what helped her through her cancer journey.  Her favorite scripture is, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:31). Thomson’s favorite celebrity is Millie Bobby Brown from the Netflix series “Stranger Things” because she had short hair, which helped her feel confident when she lost her own hair. Thomson is happiest when she’s on vacation and hopes to go to England one day because she enjoys hearing English accents.

“I am looking forward to the fashion show because I love clothes, and I think it will be fun to have my hair and makeup done, too,” said Katherine Thomson.

In April of 2017, Jacob Senden was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. That year he endured six rounds of extensive chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

“His tumor has reduced in size, and the doctors at Children’s are pleased with his progress,” said John Senden, his father.  “Jacob has really hung tough. His whole body was getting slammed with all these treatments, and he was so strong in his whole attitude and his whole body. We are so proud of him.”

Jacob is in the 8th Grade at Liberty Christian School in Argyle. He would like to be a golf professional just like his dad, whose career has brought two PGA TOUR titles. On weekends Jacob likes to play sports and be with his family.  His extended family lives in Australia, and he would love to travel there to see them.  He also enjoys Legos, music, and playing Rubik cubes. Three of his favorite celebrities are Michael Jordan, Jack Nicklaus, and Jason Witten.

“I’m excited to participate in the Gala to help raise money and awareness for childhood cancer,” said Senden.

2019 Children's Cancer Fund Models 2019 featured models for the 31st Annual Children’s Cancer Fund Gala pictured with Gala Chair Kimberly Schlegel Whitman, Honorary Co-Chairs Troy Aikman and Roger Staubach, and Children’s Cancer Fund Executive Director Jennifer Arthur

Chair Kimberly Schlegel Whitman Joins Honorary Chairs Roger Staubach & Troy Aikman and cancer patients, survivors, and celebrities for a fashion show, dinner, and dancing to raise funds for pediatric oncology research and treatment

East Dallas kids Yulissa Martinez, 5, of Pleasant Grove, and Eli Patterson, 5, of Lochwood, are featured models in the Children’s Cancer Fund Gala “An Evening in the Garden,” where hope blooms in an enchanted garden filled with miraculous stories of survival, on Friday, April 26, 2019, at the Hilton Anatole Dallas.

In September of 2015, Yulissa Martinez was diagnosed with leukemia, a type of cancer of the blood and bone marrow. She is no longer in treatment, but she visits her doctor monthly for follow up.

Martinez is in the first grade at B.H. Macon Elementary. When she grows up, she would like to be a nurse just like who ones who takes care of her. At just 5 years old, she knows that “everything will be okay.”  She loves princesses and would like to go to Disneyland so she can meet Beauty and the Beast.

“I am excited to be in the fashion show and look like a princess in a pretty dress,” said Martinez.

In September of 2016, just two weeks shy of his third birthday, Eli Patterson was diagnosed with B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, a type of cancer of the blood and bone marrow. He was immediately admitted to Children’s Medical Center to begin treatment, which will continue until May 2020.

“While he was fortunate to achieve remission during the first phase of his treatment, he had to spend about five of his first 12 months of treatment in isolation in the hospital because of complications and infections,” said Annie Patterson, his mother. “While there he enjoyed going to the oncology playroom as well as visits from his brother and sister.  He also loved pulling a red wagon around the hallways and greeting all of the staff!”

Patterson loves to fix things and play sheriff. He would like to play the guitar one day and play cowboy songs, but he told his parents he does not want to get old too fast because he doesn’t want any whiskers. He enjoys making friends and calls his mom and dad his heroes because they are a team, and he can trust what they say. One day he would like to fly on an airplane to go see brightly colored fish in the coral reef like Nemo and go whale watching. He enjoys going to the hospital for his monthly treatment, seeing the model trains, and visiting with Blair (the therapy dog) and all his friends and oncology staff who are now like his extended family.

“I’m excited to be a model in the fashion show because I can dress up (usually as a cowboy),” said Patterson.

“I was in isolation for almost a year so I’m excited to be around a lot of friends.”

Emma Danh, 5, of Oak Cliff Danh will walk the runway as a featured model in the 31st Annual Children's Cancer Fund Gala on April 26

Chair Kimberly Schlegel Whitman Joins Honorary Chairs Roger Staubach & Troy Aikman and cancer patients, survivors, and celebrities for a fashion show, dinner, and dancing to raise funds for pediatric oncology research and treatment

Emma Danh, 5, of Oak Cliff, is a featured model in the Children’s Cancer Fund Gala “An Evening in the Garden,” where hope blooms in an enchanted garden filled with miraculous stories of survival, on Friday, April 26, 2019, at the Hilton Anatole Dallas.

In September of 2017, Danh was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), cancer of the blood and bone marrow. ALL is one of the most common types of childhood cancers.

“When my daughter was first diagnosed, I was scared and sad, and we didn’t know what to do, but Children’s Medical Center helped us with treatment for her and helped our family through a very difficult time,” said Lucia Munoz, her mother.

Danh’s hero is Wonder Woman because she is strong, smart, and beautiful. She loves arts and crafts and Disney books and movies and hopes she can go to Disney World one day to have tea parties with the princesses. She also enjoys spending time with her older brother.  One day she would like to be a doctor or a chef. Her favorite songs are “Jesus Loves Me” and “This Little Light of Mine.”

“I am so excited to be a fashion show model because I will get to wear a new beautiful outfit, and I can make friends with others who are sick like me,” said Emma Danh.

Zoe Bowers, 7, of Allen Bowers is a featured model in the 31st Annual Children's Cancer Fund Gala

Chair Kimberly Schlegel Whitman Joins Honorary Chairs Roger Staubach & Troy Aikman and cancer patients, survivors, and celebrities for a fashion show, dinner, and dancing to raise funds for pediatric oncology research and treatment

Zoe Bowers, 7, of Allen, is a featured model in the Children’s Cancer Fund Gala “An Evening in the Garden,” where hope blooms in an enchanted garden filled with miraculous stories of survival, on Friday, April 26, 2019, at the Hilton Anatole Dallas. In December of 2017, Bowers was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma, a type of sarcoma which is cancer of soft tissue (such as muscle), connective tissue (such as tendon or cartilage), or bone. Bowers has now completed her treatment and undergoes scans every 30-60 days to make sure the remaining tumor is not growing.

“Zoe's eye began to swell, and we were originally told it was just a cold,” said Kara Bowers, Zoe’s mom. “It kept getting bigger and bigger, and after many false diagnoses, a radiologist from Children’s discovered it was Rhabdomyosarcoma. We immediately had surgery to remove most of the tumor, and she began six months of chemo and radiation. We were one of the lucky ones and didn’t have to spend much time in the hospital.”

Bowers is in the first grade at Beverly Elementary in Allen. She enjoys drawing, dancing, and watching movies.  When she grows up, she would like to be a dancer. On the weekends she likes to travel, and one day she would like to go to Red River, New Mexico, because she thinks it is pretty. She also thinks Taylor Swift is awesome and loves to listen to “Shake It Off” and “Part of Your World.”

“I’m so excited to walk the runway and be fashionable at the Gala,” added Bowers. “I enjoy putting on fashion shows at home!”

In March of 2017, Jituboh was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of cancer that produces immature bone. It is the most common type of cancer that arises in bones and is usually found at the end of long bones, often around the knee. She is currently in treatment and visits her doctor every other week.

Jituboh is in the 11th grade at Wylie High School. Her two-year battle with cancer has taught her that when she grows up, she would like to be a nurse practitioner. Her parents are her heroes because they work so hard for her and her family. She loves nothing more than being with her friends and playing and watching soccer. If she could take a trip anywhere in the world, it would be to Spain to see her favorite soccer team play.

“I am excited to be in the fashion show and help raise money for a cure!” said Jituboh.
