It will be held on Friday, April 21, 2017, at 6 p.m. (champagne reception), 7:15 (dinner and program), at the Hilton Anatole Hotel, 2201 N. Stemmons Freeway. A fashion show presented by Dillard’s and produced by RSC Show Productions will feature children who are undergoing treatment for cancer at Children's Health in Dallas. Proceeds from the Gala, slated to raise more than $1 million, go to Children’s Cancer Fund to support pediatric cancer research and treatment programs at Children's Medical Center. Since 1982, Children’s Cancer Fund has donated almost $8 million to the cause. The Children’s Cancer Fund spring event is the organization’s largest annual fundraiser for pediatric cancer, hosting over 1,000 guests from North Texas and across the nation.

Diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia this year, Christian Smith is a sophomore at Martin High School. The youngest of four with two dogs, Christian’s favorite subject in school is English, and he wants to be a professional athlete when he grows up. His favorite actors are Will Smith and Denzel Washington. His favorite musician is Eminem. In his free time, he likes to play video games and hang out with his family. His grandfather is his hero because “he has inspired me to do many new things.” If he could take a trip anywhere, he would re-visit Maui now that he’s a bit older.

“I am looking forward to visiting with Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman at the Gala,” said Smith. “It will also be fun to be a part of the fashion show.”

Children’s Cancer Fund brings together local celebrities, dignitaries, philanthropists, sponsors, and media personalities to serve as runway escorts for these young patients modeling in the fashion show. Honorary Event Chairs Aikman and Staubach have been involved for many years: Aikman for 20 and Staubach since the event’s inception 29 years ago. “When I was diagnosed with a tumor in 2009 at UT Southwestern, I was terrified about what would happen next. Thankfully my tumor was benign, but my fear was real,” said Gala Chair Pamela Moayedi. “My experience has made me so much more passionate about helping children in that kind of situation. I’m committed to supporting local research that saves lives, especially young kids.”

Individual tickets are $300 or $2,750 for a table of 10. Contact Children’s Cancer Fund at 972-664-1450 or visit www.ChildrensCancerFund.com/Gala for reservations and more information.

The finale of the show each year is a special time for all the children, both those currently battling cancer and young cancer survivors.  As they join together on stage, they will be introduced by the evening’s special entertainment, DJ Lucy Wrubel.

“You have to see the look on these kids’ faces as they walk down the runway. It’s what inspires us in our work and in everything we do,” said Jennifer Arthur, CCF Executive Director of Development. “They are fighters and survivors every day, but on that night, they’re stars and they’re shining brightly for their families, for the audience, and for each other.”

Children’s Cancer Fund was founded 35 years ago by a coalition of parents whose children were receiving cancer therapy at Children’s Medical Center. The organizers have since been joined by community leaders, dedicated volunteers, and health professionals in their fundraising efforts. CCF is one of the nation’s leading fundraising groups in supporting local research toward treatment and prevention of childhood cancers. Among the programs supported by Children’s Cancer Fund are the Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Fellowship Program at Children's Health and the Children's Cancer Fund Comprehensive Center for Research in Pediatric Oncology and Hematology at UT Southwestern Medical Center, which is gaining a national reputation for its work in eradicating childhood cancer. In 2002, Children’s Cancer Fund initiated funding for a full-time Child Life Specialist at the Pauline Allen Gill Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders in Children’s Medical Center to assist the outpatient team. The primary goal of the Child Life Specialist is to make each of the 80-90 daily outpatients’ visits a more positive experience. This position is funded annually by CCF, helping to ease the emotional strain of ongoing treatments, some lasting several years.

“We are absolutely thrilled with the success of this year’s event,” said Gala Co-Chair Lisa Cooley.  “For 27 years, this event has been a luncheon, so it is exciting for a new evening event to succeed.  We are very grateful to the hard work of everyone involved and the many donors, sponsors, and attendees whose generosity plays a critical role in our efforts to stop this number one disease-related killer of children in the U.S., which takes over 250 lives worldwide every day.”

Over 900 guests, greeted at the entrance of the Hilton Anatole by the characters of the Wizard of Oz, followed the yellow brick road to a night filled with emotion as over 60 pediatric cancer patients and survivors walked the runway with celebrities and sponsors in their new clothing, donated by Dillard’s. Children's Cancer Fund Gala Lisa Cooley, Gala Co-Chair; Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman, Event Chairmen; Giora Barker, Gala Co-Chair

Working for months behind the scenes, Barker and Cooley hope the transition of 27-year luncheon event to an evening gala will take the nonprofit to a new fundraising level

Lisa Cooley, of Bluffview, and Giora Barker, of Coppell, first met each other on the football field sidelines cheering on their sons at high school games.  Little did they know they would be together, chairing The Children’s Cancer Fund’s 28th annual fundraising event and first evening gala, Friday, April 22, 6 p.m., at the Hilton Anatole.

Giora Barker first became acquainted with Children’s Cancer Fund when her middle son Jack, now 18 and a senior at Jesuit, was diagnosed with T-cell Acute Leukemia at age 12 in 2009.

“Children’s Cancer Fund provided our family with an amazing network of friends who were on a similar path,” added Barker.  “This organization means so much to our family, and I will always be supportive of its mission to raise critical funding for pediatric cancer research. I am thrilled to be co-chair of this year’s gala.”

In 2010, Jack participated as an artist and model in the Children’s Cancer Fund Luncheon’s fashion show.  Barker served on the luncheon committee for several years before joining the board of directors in 2013.  And while Jack has been in remission for three years, Barker remains passionate about bringing friends and family to the cause.

“Throughout Jack’s illness, Lisa Cooley was someone who was so supportive of our family,” added Barker.  “I can’t think of a more wonderful person to serve as co-chair with me for this year’s gala. Lisa jumped on board without hesitation.”

Barker, originally from Ohio, has been living in Texas for most of life.  A graduate of the University of Texas, she first moved to Dallas for a position at Arthur Andersen, where she met her husband, Tim.  They have four children: Nick, 20; Jack; Natalie, 16, a sophomore at Coppell High School; and Charlie, 12, at Coppell Middle School West.

Barker has participated in two Boston marathons, and the family attends St. Ann’s Catholic Church.

“In addition to raising awareness and funds for children’s cancer research, the Children’s Cancer Fund Gala serves as a positive social-psychological experience for children undergoing cancer treatment,” added Barker. “These kids have been through so much, and this is a day away from hospitals and treatments.  They have a ball backstage and then they each have their moment in the spotlight as they are escorted down the runway and model their new fashions, which they have selected themselves and get to keep, donated by Dillard’s.  As the mother of a cancer survivor, I understand the importance of this type of experience. This evening will bring children living with cancer together for an unforgettable, embracing, and heartwarming experience.”

Over the last few months, Co-Chair Lisa Cooley has become very familiar with childhood cancer statistics and can provide information to anyone who will listen without a note in front of her.

“Cancer remains the number one disease-related killer of children in the U.S., taking over 250 lives worldwide every day – even though today’s survival rate is up to 80 percent!” said Cooley.  “Despite these heartbreaking numbers, all pediatric cancers combined receive less than 4 percent of federal funding for cancer research. This is why you need to join us at this year’s gala.  Together we can make a difference.”

Cooley attended Southeastern Oklahoma University and then moved south and met her husband, Clay, the namesake of Clay Cooley Automotive Group. The couple has lived in Dallas for more than 30 years. They have three children: Chase, 28, a University of Texas Law graduate who works for the family business; Ciara, 19, a sophomore at Southern Methodist University; Chance, 18, a senior at St. Mark’s.   The family attends Preston Road Church of Christ.

No stranger to philanthropy in the Dallas area, this is Cooley’s first opportunity to co-chair an event of this magnitude.

“I couldn’t be more proud to be part of the team that is breaking boundaries and setting records, as Children’s Cancer Fund becomes one of Dallas’s most anticipated evening fundraising events,” added Cooley.

Cooley is a member of Crystal Charity Ball, Cattle Baron’s Ball, Family Gateway, Heroes for Children, Sons of the Flag, After School All Stars, New Friends New Life, Kidney Texas and Housing Crisis Center.  She also supports Dallas Casa, Young Women’s Preparatory Network, Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Voice of Hope, The Family Place, Clayton Dabney Foundation, Taylor’s Gift Foundation, and Community Partners of Dallas.

The Children’s Cancer Fund Gala, “An Evening in Oz,” is the nonprofit’s 28th annual fundraiser for pediatric oncology research and treatment programs.  The gala features an auction, program, dinner and dancing with entertainment by Emerald City Band, Friday, April 22, 2016, 6 p.m. (champagne reception), 7:15 (dinner and program), at the Hilton Anatole Hotel. Proceeds from the Gala, slated to raise more than $750,000, go to Children’s Cancer Fund to support pediatric cancer research and treatment programs at Children's Medical Center. Since 1982, Children’s Cancer Fund has donated more than $7 million to the childhood cancer cause. This event is the organization’s largest annual fundraiser for pediatric cancer.

Diagnosed with T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia at age 9, Maxwell Matlock, 11, is homeschooled and in the sixth grade in Marshall, Texas. He has an older sister, an older brother, and four dogs.  His favorite school subject is social studies, and he wants to be Navy Seal on Seal Team 6 when he grows up. On the weekends, Max likes to play video games and set off fireworks. His mom is his hero because she is always there for him. If he could visit anywhere in the world, he would go to Russia because he thinks it seems interesting, and he would like to see the snow.

“I am excited to raise money to cure cancer at the fashion show,” added Maxwell Matlock.  “It will also be fun to see friends and meet famous people!”

Children’s Cancer Fund brings together local celebrities, dignitaries, sponsors, and media personalities to serve as runway escorts for these young patients modeling in the fashion show.  Event Chairs Aikman and Staubach have been involved for many years: Aikman for 19 and Staubach since the event’s inception 28 years ago.  Additional celebrity escorts include current Dallas Cowboys players, Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, Dallas SWAT, Drew Pearson, Kliff Kingsbury, Andy Dalton, Jane McGarry – WFAA, Jocelyn White, Amy Vanderoef, Miss Texas America, Sunny Malouf, and the Pink Heels Firefighters.

“Did you know 30 years ago, half of all children diagnosed with cancer would not survive? Today, the survival rate is up to 80 percent!” said Lisa Cooley, gala event co-chair. “Even though wonderful progress has been made in the fight against this horrible disease, cancer still remains the number one disease-related killer of children in the U.S., taking over 250 lives worldwide every day. Despite these heartbreaking numbers, all pediatric cancers combined receive less than 4 percent of federal funding for cancer research. This is why you need to join us at this year’s gala.  Together we can make a difference.”

Individual tickets are $300 or $2,750 for a table of 10.  Contact Children’s Cancer Fund at 972-664-1450 or visit www.ChildrensCancerFund.com for reservations and more information.  This year raffle tickets for $100 (or 6 for $500) will be sold in advance of and at the event for a chance to receive a 2016 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport 4x4 donated by the Clay Cooley Automotive Group and tricked out by NTX Auto Masters and Epic 4x4 Offroad.  Total value over $60,000.

The finale of the show each year is a special time for all the children, both those currently battling cancer and the survivors.  As they will join together on stage, they will be introduced by the evening’s special entertainment, the Emerald City Band.

“In addition to raising awareness and funds for children’s cancer research, this event serves as a positive social-psychological experience for children undergoing cancer treatment,” added Giora Barker, gala co-chair.

Children’s Cancer Fund was founded 33 years ago by a coalition of parents whose children were receiving cancer therapy at Children’s Medical Center.  The organizers have since been joined by community leaders, dedicated volunteers, and health professionals in their fundraising efforts.  CCF is one of the nation’s leading fundraising groups in supporting local research toward treatment and prevention of childhood cancers.  Among the programs supported by Children’s Cancer Fund are the Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Fellowship Program at Children's Medical Center and the Children's Cancer Fund Comprehensive Center for Research in Pediatric Oncology and Hematology at UT Southwestern Medical Center, which is gaining a national reputation for its work in eradicating childhood cancer.  In 2002, Children’s Cancer Fund initiated funding for a full-time Child Life Assistant at Children’s Medical Center’s Pauline Allen Gill Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders to assist the outpatient team.  The primary goal of the Child Life Assistant is to make each of the 80-90 daily outpatients’ visits a more positive experience.  This position is funded annually by CCF, helping to ease the emotional strain of ongoing treatments, some lasting several years.
