The Magdalen House a nonprofit organization helping women achieve sobriety and sustain recovery from alcoholism at no cost and based on 12-Step spiritual principles recently held its second annual Game, Set, Match tennis event at Lakewood Country Club. In celebration of The Magdalen House’s 35th Anniversary, this year’s Game, Set, Match event was all about the 80’s. Guests enjoyed a great day of tennis and live music from The Vinyl Countdown. More than $50,000 was raised which will cover the cost of life-saving recovery services for 27 women who enroll in the First Step program.

“For 35 years, we have proudly changed the lives of so many alcoholic women by offering compassion and support at every stage of recovery,” says Lisa Kroencke, executive director of The Magdalen House. “Funds generated by Game, Set, Match empower us to offer programs that provide solution-based education and resources to alcoholic women as well as their families and loved ones.”

According to a recent study, women increased their drinking by 41% before the pandemic. Today, there are over 250,000 alcoholic women in D/FW alone. Less than 1 in 15 alcoholic women (only 6.9%) will seek formal help. Because women face more stigmatization, shame, family responsibilities, and socioeconomic barriers than men, they frequently have co-occurring disorders and are less likely to seek treatment.

The Magdalen House is committed to helping alcoholic women achieve long-term, sustainable recovery through the following spiritually based, comprehensive programs.

  • First Step program: A two-week, residential program for an alcoholic woman who wants to stop drinking but cannot. She is provided with the education and resources to achieve sobriety and build a foundation of recovery.
  • Next Step program: A three-phase, nonresidential program for an alcoholic woman at any stage of recovery. She is provided with support and structure to sustain her recovery while growing in her knowledge of 12-Step spiritual principles.
  • Meetings and Fellowship: Solution-focused classes, meetings, and workshops are provided for alcoholic women at every stage of recovery, 365 days a year. We also have dedicated volunteers who provide Family Support to families and loved ones of alcoholics.
  • Resources and Education: Community partnerships help us connect alcoholic women and their families to resources that include sober living, counseling, and women’s health. At the same time, education initiatives allow us to reach and serve more alcoholic women.

Early childhood intervention programs have been shown to yield benefits in academic achievement, behavior, educational progression and attainment, and labor market success. The Warren Center provides physical therapy, speech-language pathology, occupational therapy, and social support needed to help children with disabilities reach their full potential.

From burlap menus to wooden signs and checkered tablecloths, rustic weddings are bringing smoky meats and flavorful delights to the dining tables at events across North Texas. Amber Polk, Director of Catering for Soulman’s Bar-B-Que, the family-owned bar-b-que mainstay of more than 45 years in Dallas/Fort Worth, has seen a significant increase in Brides (and Grooms)-to-Be choosing rustic themes for their weddings, showers, and rehearsal dinners this season.

“Food and family are our priority at Soulman’s Bar-B-Que. Our catering has been a delicious example of this for many brides already this year,” says Polk. “As we help celebrate ‘Happily Ever After’, our goal is to make each event as special, seamless, and tailor-made as possible. We know that the food and service at these special events need to be one-of-a-kind, from ‘I do’ to ‘I’m full’, and we are here to make that happen.”

Soulman’s Catering recently introduced their new Bar-B-Cuterie board, a beautiful spread of smaller bites and sweet treats spilling out for guests to take their pick. The Bar-B-Cuterie board can include choices of signature bar-b-que-themed appetizers including smoky Soulman’s dip with Texas Toast sticks, spinach stuffed mushrooms, pulled pork donut hole sliders, BLT bites, bacon-wrapped stuffed peppers, candied sausage bites, chopped beef potato skins, and  bite-size chicken & waffles.

For the main event, Soulman’s has tailored packages for weddings, not only including their traditional mouthwatering meats, but premium smoked meats like beef tenderloin, prime rib, and pork shanks.  Soulman’s Catering has decades of experience pairing meats and sides for the perfect flavor combination for any wedding or family gathering to celebrate the happy couple. The professional team at Soulman’s will even customize the serving line to match the wedding colors and theme.

“Thrillist calls Soulman’s Bar-B-Que the Best Bar-B-Que in Dallas for Takeout  & Delivery (2020) for a good reason and we want to share that with all North Texans who are looking to personalize their big day with delicious food that will be talked about long after the last guest leaves,” says Polk.

“For my daughter’s wedding, we had Soulman’s Bar-B-Que cater the food and I couldn’t be happier. The food was incredible, and the staff was efficient, friendly, and had everything handled. I didn’t have to do a thing. I would recommend Soulman’s to everyone!”  says Sharon Plunk, Mother-of-the-Bride, Heath TX.

“Soulman’s has established a sterling reputation for delivering mouth-watering food with outstanding service. No matter the size or style of each event, we guarantee that your guests will be served an exceptional meal by engaging and professional staff,” Polk concludes. Potential clients can submit their information online at www.soulmans.com/weddings and Soulman’s will be in touch within 24 hours. Soulman’s catering can produce cocktail hours, grazing boards, carving stations, bridal suite lunch packages, custom menus, desserts, customized disposables, and much more!

The Warren Center invited donors and friends of the nonprofit to celebrate Month of the Young Child at a cocktail reception hosted at Park City Club on Thursday, April 28. Guests had the pleasure of hearing Dr. Mary Ann Morris, neurologist at Children’s Medical Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities speak at the event which was underwritten by Bank of Texas.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Autism Spectrum Disorder affects roughly 1 in 44 children across the United States. In the state of Texas alone, at least 250,000 individuals have been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, according to the Texas Autism Council. Autism is the fastest-growing disability in the state — and as the disability grows — so does the need for assessments. To meet the growing demand for assessments, The Warren Center will begin offering autism assessment services for current clients.

"The earlier that services are delivered, the more likely children are to develop effective communication, language, visual, social and motor skills," says Amy Spawn, CEO of The Warren Center. "Early intervention services are critical because young children grow and develop so quickly. If they do not receive services before they are five years old, it can have lasting effects."

The comprehensive autism assessments are conducted by professionals with expertise across a number of fields. The evaluations include observations, direct interaction, a parent interview, an in-depth look at the child’s developmental history and an evaluation of the following areas: social, communication, sensory, emotional, cognitive and adaptive behavior.

The team will personally meet with parents to discuss their findings, give specific and meaningful recommendations, answer any questions, provide a detailed written report and work with parents on a plan of action going forward. The Warren Center is committed to ensuring North Texas families get answers and the help and support needed for children with developmental delays and disabilities.

In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, Uplift Education's Counseling Services is hosting their inaugural Parent Symposium Saturday, May 14th. Parent Symposium is a conference-style event that will allow parents the opportunity to learn about youth and adolescent mental health and learn how to help support their student's ever-evolving well-being needs. Topics will include social media and mental health, child development, discipline and connection for parents, teen suicide prevention, parent self-care and more. The event will include multiple breakout sessions in addition to a panel of community partners and social-behavioral counselors answering mental health-related questions submitted by Uplift parents and high school students.

In addition to the Parent Symposium, each school's Social Behavioral Counselor will host a series of mental health-related activities on their campus. Activities will include poster competitions, advisory lessons on mental health, mental health presentations by outside speakers, and mental health resource shares. Our Social Behavioral Counselors rise together every day and put the mental health and wellbeing of our students and families FIRST and celebrating Mental Health Awareness month in May is one of the many ways that counselors do this.

Uplift also prioritizes the well-being of our staff and encourages our staff and families to check in on one another. One form of support Uplift Education offers is free counseling sessions for staff, students, and families. Now, more than ever, mental health awareness and support are vital to children, youth, and families. The strength of our communities has been and will continue to be tested and our social behavioral counselors and our community partners are committed to standing alongside our families during this time as we navigate local and national youth mental health concerns.

The world has changed significantly since Uplift began, but our mission remains the same. Every child, no matter their circumstances, will be given the opportunity to learn, grow, succeed, and flourish. At Uplift Education, we believe that when students and families have both prevention and intervention-focused mental health supports, every child will be able to flourish and in turn, those students will grow into adults that help us leave this world better and healthier than we found it.

For more than 45 years, mouth-watering meat cooked low-and-slow has been the crown jewel on the menu at Soulman’s Bar-B-Que. May is the time to celebrate the 2022 Bar-B-Que season launching in the Lone Star State by continuing the Soulman’s tradition of giving North Texans what they have grown to love and expect from their favorite place for bar-b-que.

“Our family-owned business has been a part of the time-honored tradition of bar-b-que for generations, both within our own restaurant family and those who count on Soulman’s to deliver the best smoked meat and delicious homemade sides to any gathering, large or small. We are passionate about bar-b-que all year long, but love any excuse to celebrate it as a kick-off to summer,“ says Brett Randle, CEO of Soulman’s Bar-B-Que.

In addition to perfecting the art of deliciously smoked meat, the team at Soulman’s Bar-B-Que has been hard at work perfecting the ways to get it into the hands of North Texans. From the launch of the Soulman’s app earlier this year to streamlined catering and events, to thoughtful upgrades on the in-store and online experience, they continue to show why Soulman’s is considered one of the Top Bar-B-Que Chains in America and the Best Bar-B-Que in Dallas for Takeout and Delivery

“There are few things more satisfying than experiencing an expertly smoked, fall off the bone piece of meat making its way to your plate,” says Randle, “And that’s what we intend to do all summer long.”

The Soulman’s Bar-B-Que app is available in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

For more than 45 years, Soulman’s Bar-B-Que has satisfied the hardest to please bar-b-que lovers….Texans!  Founded in Pleasant Grove, Texas in 1974, Soulman’s had only a few simple goals—serve great Texas-style BBQ and offer friendly, sincere service.  Soulman’s original family recipes are still the foundation for the company’s success from their 8 different types of meat that are smoked “low & slow” over only hickory wood to their famous homemade sides, including Ranch house beans and Texas style cream corn! Throughout the years, this family-owned and operated company has remained true to its original strive for success and customer satisfaction and is honored to be considered one of the Top Bar-B-Que Chains in America (2018) and Best Bar-B-Que in Dallas for Takeout  & Delivery (2020).
