Free Documentary Screening - 78 min. 'Walk with Frank'

Walk With Frank tells the inspiring story of Frank Romeowho has been working for over 30 years to change the conversation surrounding mental health and PTSD. For his 70th birthday he decided it was time to take his message on the road and walk over 750 miles across New York State to promote his new high school curriculum “The Experience of the American Soldier”.

Frank is not a doctor or a clinician, but he is a Vietnam War veteran.  His experiences from serving in the Vietnam War have allowed for people to open up to Frank and share their personal stories.

Once Frank learned to embrace his past and not run from it, he was able to finally take his first steps toward healing. You'll also be introduced to works of art created by Frank.  While the film exposes some of the brutality of war, it doesn’t dwell there. It’s ultimately a story of hope and potential solutions.

PTSD is not just a veteran issue, and Walk With Frank aims to forever change the stigma and to advance the conversation surrounding mental health in our society. With appreciation to the VA of North Texas so that we can make it possible for others to view the film free thru Monday, Sept. 13th. A round of applause to filmmakers Ryan and Matt Mayers.   And most importantly we extend our appreciation to the more than 386,358 veterans in the DFW region who have served the nation.

Quite often the transition from working on an education to working toward building a career can be quite surprising and unsettling.  Much of what you learned in school may not apply in this new environment of policy, procedures, office politics, corporate speak, goals and objectives, and company vision.

Alan will be guiding adults on how to navigate through the world of work in his upcoming zoom course offered on Saturday morning, April 10th, from 9 to 11:30 am. via SMU CAPE.

In this 2 ½ hour course, he brings together voices of experience along with his own background of corporate work for JCPenney, Tuesday Morning, Neiman Marcus and Sally Beauty.

Whether you are approaching your summer internship or have recently graduated from college, this 2 ½ hour course is open to all adults at the cost of $39.

Course code is CS030 and registration link is here

Recommended reading to accompany the course is the quick paperback, Workplace Secrets Revealed (Passing the Baton to the Next Generation) available for $16.95 at both SMU Bookstore located on Mockingbird Lane and Barnes & Noble in Plano located at Preston and Park Blvd.

It has been five years since I came across a documentary that introduced new science showing the link between our mind, body and health. That film was The Connection by Award winning Filmmaker and Journalist, Shannon Harvey. She released that film just as yoga studios were becoming mainstream in Dallas. I organized 11 public screenings of that film in the metroplex just due to consumer demand.  Shannon has now released her second film, My Year of Living Mindfully and is offering free admission to view it online for 1 week, beginning now through Wednesday, June 3rd.

About the Film: Worried for the future mental health of her kids who were growing up amidst epidemics of stress, anxiety, depression and addiction, in a world-first experiment, Shannon recruited a team of scientists to put mindful meditation to the test. Hear from 18 experts in the area of mindfulness including :

Creator of the Stress Reduction Clinic & Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Healthcare and Society at UMass Medical School,  Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD

Co-Founder of the Center for Mindful Self-Compassion and Author of Self-Compassion, Kristen Neff, PhD
