Letter People Phonics

During the week of November 6 – 10th, 2017 Our Redeemer Lutheran School of Dallas is trying something new: each weekday, ORLS will host tours throughout the day, giving our prospective families the opportunity to visit when it is convenient for them.  Tours will begin at 8:30 am daily with the final tour starting at 2:30 pm.  Typically, the visit will last 30 to 45 minutes, and include a walk through the campus, visits to classes of interest (PK2 - 6th grade), refreshments and information from Carol Blackwood, Director of Admissions.  Attendees may park on the Park Lane side and enter at the School Office door.

Our Redeemer is nationally accredited through NLSA and has been serving families and students age 2 through the 6th grade for over 55 years.   Students score an average of 2.5 years above level in nationally normed testing. Conveniently located at the corner of Park Lane and Boedeker, just across from NorthPark Center, ORLS draws from the Park Cities, Preston Hollow, Lake Highlands, and Lakewood.

Highlights include a loving, creative, play-based Preschool (ages 2 - 4) with flexible hours and times, small class sizes, and lots of Fine Arts and motor skill enrichment. ORLS also offers before and after care options for its busy families. Its beautiful campus features lovely green spaces, including two playgrounds, a garden, and soccer field as well as a regulation sized gym for plenty of space to move for children of all ages.

Kindergarten through 6th grade students thrive in an academic environment that strives to balance boundaries and grace, work and play, effort and rest.  Standouts are level based Saxon math classes, Accelerated Reader, a strong focus on Spanish and Latin, Religion, Choir, Band, Orchestra, and Art. Wildcat sports teams compete as Metro Athletic League school in Volleyball, Soccer, Basketball and Track, and all students have both PE and Recess daily.

Reservations for Open House Week are appreciated, but drop-ins are welcome!

Please contact Carol Blackwood in Admissions at 214-368-1371 or carolb@orlcs.com to RSVP or for more information.

Wildcat Blue team with Championship award
Our Redeemer Lutheran School of Dallas Blue and Gold teams had an outstanding showing at the Metroplex Lutheran Educators' Association Scholar Bowl at Faith Lutheran in Plano on April 7th!  The Our Redeemer Blue team won the Championship and Kyle R. (6th grade) won the 5th-6th Toss Up Champ award for individual questions answered.

Each school fields its teams of 5th and 6th graders, with afternoon and morning practices that cover a wide range of problem solving, history, literature, math and more.  Using buzzers, as in Jeopardy, students study, practice and hone their responses in preparation for the annual event.
This year, all the hard practicing, great coaching from Mrs. Hobbs, and help from Ms. Schwarze, Ms. Rouse and Pastor Douthwaite paid off big!

Gold team: Andrew C., Cole B., Elizabeth R., Gabriel K., Luke R.
Blue team: Arthur R. , Carrington B., Kyle R., Ruby C., Ryan J.

Comfort and Joy!

Thanksgiving:  family, fun, food, and a nice break from school!  But then it’s Monday and the students head back to their routine.  But at Our Redeemer Lutheran School, they were welcomed with open…paws!  Phoebe the Comfort Dog surprised ORLS students with her trademark calm and loving acceptance.  Each child, from PK2 through the 6th graders, got to have special visit time petting, hugging and loving this specially bred friend to all.  The teachers even got special hugs!  Even the smallest of children warmed to her, some moving from hesitant touches to resting their heads on her as she lay on the rug with them.

Phoebe is a golden retriever.  She is a friend who brings a calming influence, allowing people to open up their hearts and receive help for what is affecting them. Phoebe, along with her brother, Pax, is a vested Comfort Dog for Lutheran Church Charities working through St. Paul Lutheran Church/The Summit in Fort Worth, Texas. She interacts with people at churches, schools, nursing homes, hospitals, events, and in disaster response situations.  Besides their more local visits, some of Phoebe’s friends visited a school in Chattanooga, TN where children and families were trying to cope with grief following the bus crash last week.  Earlier this year, they went to Orlando after the shootings there.

The multiple handlers and all who work for this ministry are volunteers.  They told the stories of how these sweet dogs are lovingly raised and cared for—even noting that they brush their teeth each morning with special peanut butter flavored toothpaste to keep their breath fresh for their new friends!

Our Redeemer has chosen to support this very special outreach program for their school chapel offerings this quarter.  Phoebe’s visit was a wonderful way for them to see first-hand the help their giving can bring to others and to get a little extra love themselves.

It’s official!  Our Redeemer Lutheran School of Dallas is proud to announce that beginning this fall, the preschool curriculum will feature weekly Spanish classes through the acclaimed Spanish House! Preschoolers can relax into the rhythm of listening and speaking Spanish.  Interactive classes feature projects, storytelling, games, and songs keep children engaged as they learn the language.

In addition to Our Redeemer’s play-based daily curriculum, each day includes something special: Library, Stretch–n-Grow, Music, Chapel and now, Spanish.  This will prepare ages 2 through 4 for the outstanding ORLS Kindergarten through 6th grade Spanish program currently in place.

ORLS has a dynamic language focus that includes twice weekly Spanish class beginning in Kindergarten, and increasing to four times a week by the 5th grade level.  ORLS also includes co-curricular Latin for 4th through 6th graders, which make it easy to see why Our Redeemer has gained a reputation for providing an excellent foundation for the Humanities.  ORLS alumni have won language awards, placed out of lower division classes and gone on to AP test success.

This new partnership with the outstanding traditions of Spanish House is an exciting step toward preparing young children for the world around them and setting a strong foundation for their future.

Limited space available for 2016-17. Our Redeemer Lutheran School of Dallas is located at 7611 Park Lane at Boedeker in Dallas, just across from NorthPark Center.  For information or to schedule a tour, please contact Carol Blackwood at 214-368-1371 or carolb@orlcs.com.

Learning a song in Latin class

“Salvete, y’all!”  At Our Redeemer Lutheran School of Dallas, located at Park Lane and Boedeker, this is actually a common greeting among the students!  This year, in addition to the outstanding K – 6th Spanish program, ORLS piloted a new co-curricular Latin class.

In the 4th - 6th grades, Latin is taught twenty minutes a day, four days a week.  The Latin program is designed to help students understand and speak Latin, as well as impress upon them the classical world's impact on art, architecture, government, law, religion, and medicine.  Latin sessions are lively and full of student participation:  students converse with the teacher in Latin, memorize quotations from Roman authors, learn about Roman customs and Roman mythology, sing songs, and act out skits.

Since more than half of all English words are derived from Latin, an additional benefit from the program is a wider English vocabulary.  Students also strengthen their grasp of English syntax and grammar and enjoy a leg up in studying any of the Latin-based languages such as Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese.  The studies culminate in a field trip to locations such as the zoo or aquarium to see the Latin words “in action”.

The classes are taught by Pastors Brent McGuire and Adam Douthwaite, both of whom are trained in classical languages, Pastor McGuire having delivered the Latin oration at Harvard's Commencement Exercises in 1995.

For more information on this program or for admission and scholarship information, please contact Carol Blackwood at carolb@orlcs.com or 214-368-1371.  Our Redeemer is located at 7611 Park Lane at Boedeker.  Visit us at ORDallas.org or https://www.facebook.com/OurRedeemerLutheranSchoolOfDallas/

See for yourself at our Fall Open House coming up Thursday, November 12th from 9 to 11 am.

Smart:  Our Redeemer Lutheran is a nationally accredited, private Christian school located just across from NorthPark Center at 7611 Park Lane.    Our small class sizes and individualized attention is reflected in the outstanding national test scores:  ORLS students historically achieve an average of 2.5 years above grade level.  Our Preschool, for ages 2 - 4, is play based with a mix of child led and teacher guided activities.  Flexible days and hours, spacious facilities, arts enrichment and small classes led by loving, degreed teachers are hallmarks of this program. In Elementary grades, level appropriate Math placement, Accelerated Reader and Phonics challenge and enhance our students' academic strengths as the cornerstones of lifelong learning.  Fine Arts, Science, Social studies, the annual Academic fair and Outdoor Education are an integral part of each child’s learning.

Well Rounded: Additionally, Our Redeemer's co-curricular enrichments include strong Spanish, Latin, Technology, Chapel, Interscholastic Athletics and Art and Music programs (including choir, musicals, bells, and band opportunities) which many schools, unfortunately, have had to cut.  Before and after care options are also provided for potty-trained preschoolers through 6th graders.  With excellent parental involvement in areas from the annual Auction to our outstanding garden for all ages, our children thrive in a diverse community of love and support.   Global and local outreach and service projects prepare children for a lifetime of giving and helping others.

Ed at the Our Redeemer School auction in 2008

Our Redeemer Lutheran School of Dallas had a very good friend and ardent supporter in ORL Church member Ed Trapp—a friendship that continues after his passing last year.  In addition to his love and commitment to his church, his ardent passion was people relationships. His strong tenet in his professional and personal life was that "People are Important." Mr. Trapp’s giving reflected this by leaving a very generous gift for capital improvements to the school buildings and an endowment for tuition assistance, beginning the 2015-16 school year.

This summer’s hard work is now coming to an end, with new carpeting and paint throughout the school, a floor to ceiling remodel of the lunchroom and a courtyard renovation.  As the furniture gets moved back, the rooms are beginning to really take shape, ready for a fresh, exciting new start for the school year.

The generous scholarship funding was added to the existing Ruth T. Carlson Scholarship Endowment, which Mr. Trapp set up years before to honor his dear friend.  He was a strong advocate for the school and his gift will make an outstanding education possible for children for many years to come.

Our Redeemer Lutheran Church and School will celebrate with a “Renovation Reveal” on Sunday, August 16th between worship services (9:00 to 9:30 am) and after the late service (11:45 to 12:30).

Our Redeemer is located at 7611 Park Lane at Boedeker.  For information or to schedule school tours for PK2 – 6th grade, please contact Carol Blackwood at 214-368-1371 or visit orlcs.com/school.
