The nonprofit Broadway Dallas is best known for presenting the most popular and critically acclaimed touring Broadway shows to North Texas audiences, including the most recent national tours of HAMILTON and HAIRSPRAY.  Broadway Dallas also takes very seriously its mission to support and uplift underserved members of the Dallas community.  

To that end, during the five-week engagement of HAMILTON, Broadway Dallas asked theatergoers to donate dental hygiene products to support its partner CitySquare, the Dallas-based nonprofit that aims to fight the causes and effects of poverty through service, advocacy and friendship.  The result was an astounding 232 pounds of donated toothbrushes, toothpaste, mouth wash and more.

CitySquare's mission resonates deeply with Broadway Dallas, which is committed to not only entertaining but also giving back to the community it serves. In 2024, Broadway Dallas proudly supports CitySquare by organizing donation drives at each of its performances throughout the season. This ongoing collaboration underscores Broadway Dallas's dedication to making a positive impact beyond the stage curtains.

Additionally, during the engagement of the national Broadway tour of HAIRSPRAY, Broadway Dallas hosted a donation drive to collect hair care items for CitySquare. Patrons donated more than 350 bottles of shampoo and conditioner plus hundreds of brushes, ribbons, hair ties and of course, cans of hairspray. HAIRSPRAY, known for its infectious energy and message of inclusivity, was the perfect performance for Broadway Dallas to channel its community-focused initiatives. By collecting hair care products during the show's run, Broadway Dallas aims to make a meaningful contribution to CitySquare's mission.

Soulman’s Bar-B-Que is open for business at its 20th North Texas location at 480 Grapevine Highway, Hurst Texas 76054. North Texas’ favorite bar-b-que is now serving up its award-winning smoked meats and sides in its second Hurst location In celebration of the newest location, on Saturday, June 1st, competitors in the Soulman’s signature rib-eating contest vied for both bragging rights and a charity donation. The Mayor of Hurst, Henry Wilson, won the contest securing a donation for 6 Stones, the HEB non-profit that has been serving area families and individuals in need since 2009, by providing emergency assistance with food, clothing and resources, revitalizing homes, giving backpacks, school supplies, Christmas gifts and dinner or mentoring people out from poverty. The mayor’s win represents his second victory as he also won the rib eating contest at Soulman’s opening of the Hurst location on Bedford-Euless Road.

“Our decades-long legacy is that we take pride in everything we do, in and out of the kitchen.  We believe strongly in the North Texas communities we serve and make it our mission to support local schools, sports & recreation, faith & family organizations, and the business community that drives success for our neighbors and friends,” says Brett Randle, CEO of Soulman’s Bar-B-Que.

The Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon cutting for community and business leaders on June 18th at the newest Soulmans’s location where guests were treated to lunch and learned more about the five-decade-long history of Soulman’s in North Texas.

High school students, teachers, parents, friends, arts advocates, celebrities and city officials celebrated as winners and scholarship recipients were announced at the 13th Annual Broadway Dallas High School Musical Theatre Awards (HSMTA). The ceremony was hosted by Dallas native and two-time HSMTA winner Haley Dortch and took place live at the Music Hall at Fair Park on Friday, May 24, featuring student performances, award presentations including $65,000 in scholarships, and acceptance speeches from the winners.

 

The Broadway Dallas HSMTA aim to inspire and honor excellence in high school musical theater, and to recognize the importance of musical theater and arts education within the North Texas community. This regional program culminates at the Music Hall with an awards ceremony, modeled after the Tony Awards®, to recognize outstanding musical theater productions and students.

 

The 2024 Outstanding Musical Award went to Rowlett High School’s production of Six and the awards for Outstanding Lead Performer were presented to Damson Chola Jr. (Cleburne High School) and Fabiola Caraballo Quijada (Tyler Legacy High School). A list of all 2024 winners, participating high schools, and their productions can be found at https://broadwaydallas.org/education-community/hsmta/.

 

"We say this every year, but it’s true – the Broadway Dallas High School Musical Theatre Awards is the most special night of the year,” said Ken Novice, president and CEO of Broadway Dallas. A total of 79 productions from 73 participating high schools were evaluated by a diverse group of highly qualified judges from the North Texas theater community. Awards were presented in 15 categories and scholarships were awarded to outstanding graduating seniors who apply and selected by the Broadway Dallas scholarship panel. Through funds raised by private donations, Broadway Dallas HSMTA awards $65,000 in scholarships to deserving students. To date, Broadway Dallas HSMTA College Scholarship program has awarded more than $500,000 in cash scholarships to deserving students.

 

The live ceremony was hosted by Dallas native Haley Dortch, who won the Broadway Dallas HSMTA Outstanding Lead Performer two times and is starring as Fantine in the national tour of Les Misérables.
